• British Airways (BA) faced its first global strike by pilots on Monday and the possibility of almost all its flights being grounded for two days.


• The UK flag carrier and its 4,300 pilots have been locked in a nine-month pay dispute that could disrupt or alter the travel plans of nearly 300,000 people.


• British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government urged both sides Friday, "to get around the table and sort this out".


• But BA only upped the stakes by reportedly threatening to strip pilots and their families of free travel perks if the strike action goes ahead.

• Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has said the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will attract trade, investment and technology from China to Pakistan so as to help boost his country's future development.


• Mr. Khan made the remarks during his meeting with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the Prime Minister House, adding that his country admires China's achievements in development and is willing to learn the successful experience from China regarding poverty alleviation and anti-corruption, Xinhua reported.

• The United States and Afghanistan's Taliban both left the door open to fresh talks after President Donald Trump abruptly canceled a secret summit, but the insurgents threatened to inflict greater costs.


• Washington also said it would not relent in fighting the terrorists after Trump blamed the scuttling of the unprecedented meeting on a Taliban attack that killed a US soldier.


• Trump said he had invited Taliban leaders and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani for talks at the Camp David presidential retreat on a draft deal that would see the United States withdraw thousands of troops and wind down its longest-ever war.

• Google is honouring German doctor Ruth Pfau on her birth anniversary with a Doodle, commemorating her dedication to eradicate leprosy in Pakistan. Dr Ruth Pfau was born in 1929 in Germany's Leipzig.


• "I could not believe that humans could live in such conditions," Dr Pfau had reportedly said after first witnessing the sights of a leper colony in Pakistan.

• Hong Kong police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in the upmarket Causeway Bay shopping district, after demonstrators had rallied at the U.S. Consulate calling for help in bringing democracy to the Chinese-ruled city.


• Police moved on protesters from the Central business district who dispersed to nearby Admiralty, the bar district of Wan Chai and on to Causeway Bay in a now-familiar pattern of cat-and-mouse clashes over three months of unrest.

• The Maharashtra Home Ministry has reportedly written to the Navi Mumbai planning authority asking for land on which to build a detention centre for illegal immigrants.

• Almost a month after the Himachal Pradesh government cancelled the examination for the recruitment of constables in the state police following the arrest of people impersonating as candidates, over 38,000 took the reconducted test.


• The examination was re-conducted after six men from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana were caught impersonating as candidates at a test center in Parol area of Kangra district on August 12.


• Later, more arrests were made. A total of 38,277 candidates appeared for the one-hour test, an official said, adding that of 39,259 candidates, 1,032 did not take the examination.

• Gold loan lender Muthoot Finance, which is bearing the brunt of the strike by a section of workers in Kerala, has scotched rumours of closing down of its branches outside the State, saying that “such reports are purely untrue, baseless and with mala fide intention by some unethical players”.


• “We have closed down few branches to optimise our operations”, the company said. It has chalked out extensive branch expansion plans across the country. The company is opening a few more branches to strengthen its operations, branch network and to serve the increasing demand from customers.

• The amalgamation of 10 public sector banks into four has nearly ended the consolidation process and created almost the right number of banks to cater to the needs of the aspirational and new India, Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar said.

• The CEO of crisis-hit Japanese auto giant Nissan plans to resign, local media reported, days after admitting he received more pay than his entitlement.


• The reports said it was not immediately clear when Hiroto Saikawa would step down, as the firm struggles with the aftermath of the arrest of its former chief Carlos Ghosn on charges of financial misconduct.
