  • Both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main challenger Benny Gantz claimed victory in Israel`s election but exit polls and early results indicated the veteran right-wing leader was on course for a record fifth term.

  • Updated exit polls on two of Israel`s three main TV channels a few hours after voting ended showed Netanyahu`s Likud winning more parliamentary seats than Gantz`s centrist Blue and White Party. A third survey put Blue and White a seat ahead of Likud.

  • Search and rescue teams found wreckage belonging to a Japanese Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter that disappeared on [latex]9^{th}[/latex] April over the Pacific Ocean close to northern Japan.

  • Senior leaders of Japan's Ministry of Defense, U.S. Forces Japan, Pacific Air Forces and Lockheed Martin gather in a Japan Air Self-Defense Force hangar for the commemorative ceremony welcoming the first operational F-35A Lightning II to JASDF's 3rd Air Wing at Misawa Air Base.

UK flags financial implications of Jallianwala Bagh apology

  • The UK government flagged "financial implications" as one of the factors it had to consider while reflecting upon demands for a formal apology for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre to mark its centenary this week.

  • UK Foreign Office minister Mark Field told a debate on "Jallianwala Bagh massacre" at Westminster Hall in the House of Commons complex that while it was important to draw a line under the past over the "shameful episode" in history, repeatedly issuing apologies for events related to the British Raj came with their own problems.
Sri Lanka opens new railway line built with China's assistance

  • Sri Lanka has opened a new railway line, built with China's assistance, connecting its coastal city of Matara and Beliatta in Hambantota, a move that will boost passenger traffic into the island's deep south.

  • The 26.75-km long Matara-Beliatta railway extension is the first to be constructed in Sri Lanka since 1948, and it has the country's longest and second longest railway bridges, measuring 1.5-km and 1.04-km, respectively.

Airtime given to parties not balanced, EC tells DD News

  • The Election Commission said the airtime coverage given by Doordarshan News channel to various political parties following announcement of general election on March 10 was “disproportionate and not balanced” and asked the state broadcaster to desist from extending preferential airtime coverage in favour of any party.

  • EC’s comments, made in a letter to I&B secretary, followed after DG Doordarshan News forwarded to it details of airtime coverage given by DD News channel to news pertaining to different political parties since the model code of code was enforced. The letter, dated March 5, stated that BJP had got the maximum coverage on DD News and its regional channels during the current election.

  • Pawan Khera claimed the Modi government amended UPA-2’s Defence Procurement Procedure, 2013, to favour Dassault Aviation and told the company it was no longer required to submit offset plans, divulge identities of Indian offset partners (IOP) or share details of their work share, specific products and supporting documents indicating IOP eligibility at the bid stage, as prescribed in the DPP.
Pakistan releases 100 Indian prisoners

  • Pakistan has released 100 Indian prisoners as a "goodwill gesture", all of whom crossed over through the Attari-Wagah border.

  • This comes after India called upon Pakistan to take steps for the repatriation and release of the prisoners lodged in jails despite the completion of their sentences.

  • There are 537 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails, 483 of whom are fishermen.

SBI cuts interest rate on home loans up to ₹30 lakh by 10 bps

  • SBI has reduced the interest rate on housing loans of up to ₹30 lakh by 10 basis points to a range between 8.60% and 8.90% per annum.

  • India's largest lender also cut its benchmark lending rates by five basis points across all tenors. The one-year marginal cost of fund-based lending rate (MCLR) now stands at 8.50%, down from 8.55%.
RBI Issues Norms For Banks to Set Up Currency Chests

  • The Reserve Bank of India came out with guidelines for banks to set up new currency chests, which include a minimum area of 1,500 square feet for strong room.

  • The new chests should have a processing a capacity of 6.6 lakh pieces of banknotes per day. The currency chests should have CBL of Rs 1,000 crore, subject to ground realities and reasonable restrictions, at the discretion of the Reserve Bank.

  • London became the first city in the world to implement a Ultra Low Emission Zone for 24×7 hours a week, inside which vehicles will have to meet tough emissions standards.

IIT Madras tie up with GE to set up India’s first ‘Cold Spray’ SMART Lab

  • The High-Pressure Cold Spray machinery has been carried from Plasma Giken, Japan.
