  • Twelve days after the Pulwama terror attack, the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out major strikes at terror camps of Jaish-e-Mohammed in Balakot town of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.

  • Pakistani security forces and JeM terrorists were caught unaware when 12 Mirage fighter jets stormed in their territory around 3.40 am on [latex]26^{th}[/latex] February, and dropped around 1,000kg bombs, which killed up to 350 terrorists.

  • After the entire operation was over, Prime Minster Narendra Modi, during his political rally in Rajasthan, said he would not let our country down, and that the country was in the "safe hands".

  • While Pakistan has acknowledged the strikes carried out in the region, it has warned India of an appropriate response at the "time and place of its choosing".
China opposes foreign interference in Venezuela's affairs: Envoy

Indonesia says at least three killed, 60 feared buried in illegal mine collapse

  • Indonesian officials said dozens of rescuers were using spades and ropes to dig out more than 60 people who were feared buried by the collapse of an illegal gold mine on the island of Sulawesi that killed at least three.

  • Rescuers said they could hear the voices of some of those trapped in makeshift mining shafts in a muddy hillside in the Bolaang Mongondow area of North Sulawesi province and believed many were still alive.

EVM is ‘information’ under Right to Information Act, rule Central Information Commission

Key Highlights:

  • The Central Information Commission (CIC) has said that an electronic voting machine (EVM) is “information” under the Right to Information Act and it can be demanded by a citizen from the Election Commission (EC) by paying Rs. 10.

  • This indicates that whenever an RTI is filed, the Election Commission (EC) has to either provide it or reject it only the exemption clauses in the RTI Act and the rejected cases can also be taken to the CIC.

  • The decision was taken by Sudhir Bhargava- Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).

  • He took into consideration the definition of information under Section 2(f) of the RTI Act which comprises “any material in any form, including records, documents, memos, e-mails, opinions, advices, press releases, circulars, orders, logbooks, contracts, reports, papers, samples, models, data material held in any electronic form…”

Pakistan violates ceasefire along LoC, 5 soldiers injured

  • The Army said at least five soldiers got injured after Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu by resorting to shelling with heavy calibre weapons.

  • Army sources said that unprovoked ceasefire violation was initiated by Pakistani Army in 12 to 15 places all along the LoC. Two out of five injured soldiers were taken to a military hospital for treatment and are stable.

  • The government is looking at the possibility of merging regional rural banks (RRBs) operating within the same state and has urged the state-owned banks to explore such options, as it wants further consolidation among RRBs. It eventually wants to bring them down to a more manageable number of 10-15.

  • There are 56 RRBs functioning in the country, and State Bank of India, the largest bank, is the biggest sponsor with 14 RRBs. Already, around 10 have been merged which will be effective from [latex]1^{st}[/latex] April this year.

  • Indian batsman Suresh Raina became the first Indian to score 8000 runs in T20 cricket after scoring just 12 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Puducherry. He was playing for Uttar Pradesh.

  • He has scored 8001 runs in 300 Twenty20s at an average of 33.47 and notched 4 centuries and 48 fifties in the shortest format. MS Dhoni is the only other Indian to have played 300 T20s so far.

  • He has scored the 6th most runs in T20s after Chris Gayle (12298 runs), Brendon McCullum (9922), Kieron Pollard (8838 runs), Shoaib Malik (8603 runs) and David Warner (8111 runs).

Playwright Mahesh Elkunchwar chosen for the META lifetime achievement award

  • Mahesh Elkunchwar, an eminent Indian Playwright, has been chosen for this 2019’s META Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be conferred upon him at the 14th Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) festival to be held on [latex]12^{th}[/latex] March 2019.

  • He is critically-acclaimed and famous for having experimented with a wide range of drama and is considered a powerful force in both Indian and Marathi theatre scene. His 1985 play ‘Wada Chirebandi‘ (Old Stone Mansion) has been staged in Marathi,Hindi and Bengali and also adapted for television.

  • He has written more than 30 plays and essays, like ‘Sultan’, ‘Holi’, ‘Garbo’, ‘Yatanaghar’, and ‘Atmakatha’ and is also a receiver of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship.

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K Sivan said that the Bengaluru-based space agency is set to launch an electronic intelligence satellite Emisat for the DRDO in March.

  • Sivan added that ISRO will also launch 28 third-party satellites and demonstrate its new technologies like three different orbits with a new variant of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket in March. He, however, did not give a specific date.
