  • It all started on September 1, when the president tweeted that states including Alabama "will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated" a few days after the fierce Atlantic storm became a hurricane.

  • Exactly 20 minutes later, the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Alabama tweeted directly contradicting the president: "Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane #Dorian will be felt across Alabama."
North Korea Fires Projectiles After Offering Talks With US

  • North Korea fired projectiles toward the sea, South Korea's military said, hours after Pyongyang said it is willing to hold working-level talks with the United States in late September.

  • Negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington have been gridlocked since a second summit between the North's leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in February ended without a deal.

  • North Korea twice launched "unidentified projectiles" in an easterly direction from South Pyongan province, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
British Parliament Suspended Until October 14, Speaker Protests

  • Britain's parliament began a controversial five-week suspension during a ceremony marred by a protest in which opposition MPs held up signs reading "SILENCED" and shouted "Shame on you!".

  • House of Commons Speaker John Bercow condemned the move as "an act of executive fiat" and one of the protesting MPs was seen trying to stop him leaving the chamber to take part in the ceremony, which suspends parliament until October 14.

India to raise target for restoring degraded land

  • Prime Minister Narendera Modi has raised by 10% the amount of degraded land India has agreed to rehabilitate by 2030.

  • “I would like to announce that India would raise its ambition of the total area that would be restored from its land degradation status, from 21 million hectares to 26 million hectares between now and 2030,” he said as the keynote speaker during the high-level ministerial segment at the ongoing United Nation Conference of Parties summit on land degradation.

  • On August 27, Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar, during a prelude to the UN summit, had said that India would restore “5 million hectares” between 2021 and 2030.
Seven 1984 riot cases to be reopened

  • The Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Union Home Ministry has decided to reopen investigations in seven anti-Sikh riot cases of 1984 in which trial had been completed and cases closed as the accused were discharged.

  • In April, the Ministry expanded the ambit of the SIT to reinvestigate or further investigate cases in which the accused were discharged or acquitted.

  • The seven anti-Sikh riot cases were registered in 1984 at the police stations in Vasant Vihar, Sun Light Colony, Kalyanpuri, Parliament Street, Connaught Place, Patel Nagar, and Shahdara.
TMC, CPI, NCP defend national party status before ECI

  • The Election Commission met representatives of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Trinamool Congress and Communist Party of India hearing their arguments on why their status as national parties should not be revoked.

  • All the three parties have argued that they should not be de-recognised only on the basis of the recent electoral performances.

  • Eight Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, who were involved in threatening and intimidation of locals, were arrested in south Kashmir's Sopore.

  • The arrest comes two days after four people, including a two-year-old girl, were injured after terrorists attacked house of a fruit trader in Sopore.

  • Saturday's attack is seen as an attempt by terrorists to instill fear among the people and disrupt peace in the Kashmir Valley.

  • "The central government has given the approval to set up 462 Eklavya residential school s on the lines of Navodaya schools.

For capital push to housing-fin securitisation, RBI panel makes a slew of recommendations

  • Bank of India committee has recommended the setting up of an intermediary to specifically promote mortgage securitisation, reducing the minimum holding period, and a separate investment limit of 5 per cent in provident fund and insurance investment guidelines, among others.

  • The committee, headed by Harsh Vardhan, Senior Advisor, Bain & Co, said that a government-sponsored intermediary, through the National Housing Bank (NHB), will enable market-making and standards-setting.

  • It suggested developing standards for loan origination, loan servicing, loan documentation, and loans to be eligible for securitisation, including standardised formats for data collection and aggregation.
Union Bank Board okays Merger of Andhra, Corp Bank

  • Union Bank of India said its board of directors has approved merger of Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank with itself and given nod for a capital infusion of Rs 17,200 crore in the current financial year.

  • The decision was taken at the meeting of the board of directors held, the bank said in a regulatory filing.

  • The board “considered and given its in-principle approval for the amalgamation of Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank into Union Bank.
Oriental Bank of Commerce cuts MCLR by up to 25 bps

  • Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) has cut its marginal cost of funds-based lending rates (MCLR) by up to 25 basis points across tenors. With this move, the overnight MCLR has come down to 7.90 per cent from 8.15 per cent now.

  • One-year MCLR has now come down to 8.40 per cent from 8.55 per cent. One-month MCLR is now 8 per cent (8.20 per cent); three-month MCLR is 8.15 per cent (8.35 per cent); and six-month MCLR is 8.30 per cent (8.45 per cent).

  • The revised rates will be applicable from Tuesday, an OBC statement said.
