Two lakh in Zimbabwe hit by floods, cyclone: UN

  • The number of people in Zimbabwe affected by a devastating cyclone and flooding has jumped to 200,000, with most of the damage occurring near the Mozambique border.

  • The initial estimate of those hit in Zimbabwe was 15,000 but World Food Programme (WFP) spokesman Herve Verhoosel told reporters in Geneva that the numbers had surged following an overnight assessment.

  • Mizoram Assembly passed a new bill named Mizoram Maintenance of Household Registers Bill, 2019 with an objective to detect foreigners illegally residing in Mizoram,who takes away the benefits of the citizen of Mizoram.

  • As per the Bill, the Assembly will create the 2 registers namely one for the citizen residents and another for non-citizen residents of a village/area/town.

  • This register comprises the name, details and passport size photographs of every individual in the state.

India's deepest shaft cave discovered in Meghalaya

  • India's deepest shaft cave Krem Um Ladaw has been discovered in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district during the annual 'Caving in the Abode of the Clouds Expedition'.

  • The cave has a 105 m deep shaft entrance passage, Meghalaya Adventurers' Association General Secretary Brian Kharpran Daly said, This comes a year after the world's longest sandstone cave was discovered in Meghalaya.
Shark-faced plane lands at Delhi airport for the first time

  • A shark-themed plane, an Embraer E190-E2 commercial jet, landed at the Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport for the first time.

USD 50 Million loan invest in Avaada Energy Private Limited by Asian Development Bank (ADB)

  • To expand the capacity of Renewable Energy Capacity in India, Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a loan agreement of USD 50 million in India’s renewable energy producer company Avaada Energy Private Limited (AEPL).

  • It was signed by Avaada Energy chairman Vineet Mittal and ADB Principal Investment Specialist Mayank Choudhary.

  • This agreement will help in Government’s strategy to give a boost in the share of renewable energy generation capacity from about 20% in 2018 to 40% by 2030, and to reduce India’s emission intensity of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 33% to 35% by 2030.

  • ADB’s Ordinary Capital Resources and Leading Asia’s Private Sector Infrastructure Fund (LEAP) are the expected agency for this investment.
SBI inks pact with Bank of China for business opportunities

  • SBI has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bank of China, third-largest bank in the world by capital size and one of the major players in the Chinese banking sector, to enhance business synergies between both the banks.

  • This MoU will facilitate the clients of both the banks to access banking products and services of each other, which will lead to a mutually beneficial relationship.

  • Through this pact, both SBI and BoC will gain direct access to their respective markets of operation. Both banks’ clients will be able to use the vast combined network to expand their businesses abroad.

Special Olympics World Games 2019 held in Abu Dhabi

Key Highlights:

  • The 15th Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 for athletes with Intellectual disabilities held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

  • India wins 368 medals at the Special Olympics World Summer Games including 85 gold, 154 silver and 129 bronze. Jitendra Pawal won a gold medal in the 200 m race.

  • Medals are won in Judo, Athletics, Cycling, Aquatics, Powerlifting, Basketball Traditional, Table Tennis, Roller skating, Badminton, Handball Traditional and Football 7 Side Female competitions in the game.

  • Out of 24 Olympic type sports which featured the World Cup, India participated in 14 types. It is for the 9th time India is participating in the Special Olympics.

  • India participated in Judo and Futsal for the first time. Indians won a total of 45 medals in the cycling event and 49 medals in Roller skating.
Junior Davis Cup & Fed Cup to be held in Bangkok as India lost its hosting rights

  • India has lost the hosting rights of two international tennis tournaments viz. Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup which were scheduled to be held in RK Khanna stadium, New Delhi in April. Now both events will be held in Bangkok, Thailand.

  • Reasons behind losing of hosting rights are Absence of a written guarantee from India that the visa entry would be granted to the Pakistani contingent for the Davis Cup.

  • Closure of Pakistan’s air space after the Balakot air strike, resulting flights of participating teams have to take alternate and long routes to enter the Indian airspace.

  • Earlier, India had stripped to host Junior Asian championships by United World Wrestling (UWW). The stripping off of India’s hosting rights is due to the India’s denial of visas to Pakistani shooters for the ISSF World Cup held in Delhi in February following the Pulwama attack.

2019 Templeton Prize won by Brazilian astronomer Marcelo Gleiser

  • Brazilian physicist and astronomer Marcelo Gleiser won the 2019 Templeton Prize, worth $1.4m (Rupees 9,61,20,500), for combining science and spirituality in his work.
