Pakistan's Prime Minister Khan in Iran to talk security, ties

  • Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived in Iran to discuss security and regional issues, a day after Islamabad urged Tehran to act against militants behind killings in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province.

  • A new umbrella group representing various insurgent groups operating in Baluchistan claimed responsibility for an attack when 14 passengers were killed after being kidnapped from buses in the province, which borders Iran.

  • Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the training and logistical camps of the new alliance that carried out the attack were inside Iran and called for Iran to take action against the insurgents.
Saudi Arabia, UAE grant USD 3 billion of support to Sudan

  • Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said they had agreed to send Sudan $3 billion worth of aid, throwing a lifeline to its new military leaders after protests led to the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir.

  • The two countries will deposit $500 million with the Sudanese central bank and send the rest in the form of food, medicine and petroleum products.
Indian, US Navies hold anti submarine warfare exercise

  • Indian and the US Navies have held a joint submarine-hunting exercise in the Indian Ocean, aiming to lay the groundwork for coordinating maritime patrol and reconnaissance, according to the US Navy.

  • Indian and the US’ P-8 anti-submarine aircraft, along with the USS Spruance, a guided-missile destroyer, participated in the anti—submarine warfare training on [latex]15^{th}[/latex] April.

Bhopal gas tragedy among world’s major industrial accidents of 20th century: UN

  • The 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy which killed thousands of people is among the world’s “major industrial accidents” of the 20th century, a UN report has said, warning that 2.78 million workers die from occupational accidents and work-related diseases each year.

  • The report titled ‘The Safety and Health at the Heart of the Future of Work – Building on 100 years of experience’ released by the the UN labour agency International Labour Organization (ILO) said the Bhopal disaster was among the world’s “major industrial accidents after 1919”.

  • The 2019 Lok Sabha election has seen the Supreme Court intervene time and again with the Election Commission (EC) to do the right thing.

  • From asking the panel to watch a movie before deciding to get its release postponed to increasing the VVPAT verification from one to five EVMs in an Assembly segment and standing up for the EC in the electoral bonds issue, the Supreme Court has, for the past few weeks, intervened for the conduct of free and fair polls.
J&K highway ban partially eased

  • Jammu and Kashmir government partially eased the restrictions on civilian traffic movement along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway (NH-44). From [latex]22^{nd}[/latex] April, the bi-weekly ban would be restricted only to Sunday and traffic will ply as usual on Wednesdays.

  • In view of peaceful polls in Baramulla and Jammu on [latex]11^{th}[/latex] April and Srinagar and Kathua on [latex]18^{th}[/latex] April, the government reviewed the requirement of security forces and decided to relax the ban.
SpaceX suffers capsule anomaly during Florida tests

  • Elon Musk`s SpaceX suffered an anomaly in one of its Crew Dragon capsules while conducting engine tests at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

  • "The initial tests completed successfully but the final test resulted in an anomaly on the test stand".

  • The issue was earlier reported by Florida, which said orange smoke was seen rising above SpaceX`s facilities, and that the anomaly was contained with no injuries.

Exim Bank Funds Projects Worth USD 267 mn In Rwanda

  • The International Association of Athletics Federation Disciplinary Tribunal (IAAF) has banned the 2008 Olympic 1,500m champion and 3-time world champion Asbel Kiprop of Kenya for 4 years for doping until February 2022. Asbel Kipropi.

  • Kiprop was suspended by IAAF’s Athletes Integrity Unit (AIU) in May 2018 after having tested positive to blood-boosting Erythropoietin (EPO) in an out-of-competition test in Kenya in November 2017. His backup “B” sample also tested positive for EPO.

  • Asbel Kiprop was awarded gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics after race winner Rashid Ramzi from Bahrain failed a doping test and had his medal taken off.
City back on top after nervy win

  • Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League with a fifth-minute Phil Foden goal giving it a nervy 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad stadium.

  • The victory, coming three days after Spurs eliminated City from the Champions League, puts the pressure back on title rival Liverpool, which is at Cardiff City on Sunday and trails by a point with each side having played 34 games.

IAF recommends Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman for Vir Chakra

  • Defence sources said Varthaman has been recommended for a Vir Chakra, which is the third highest wartime medal after Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra.

  • Sources said Varthaman was “routinely transferred” to another airbase in Rajasthan and not because of any security concerns for his safety in Jammu and Kashmir, however, the IAF refused to comment officially.

  • Prof. Sree N Sreenath, President of Sewa International since 2009, has been inducted into the 10th class of Cleveland Hall of Fame along with five other inductees – Paul Burick, Ingrida Bublys, Dr. Akram Boutros, Richard Fleischman and Marilyn Madigan from over 100 nominations.

  • Sreenath, Faculty at Case Western Reserve University, inducted into the Hall of Fame for his contributions in applications in systems biology, global issues and sustainable development on April 16th by Ramesh Shah of the Association of Indian Physicians of Northern Ohio.

  • He earned BE in Electrical Engineering from Bangalore University and is currently serving as Director of Case GEMNI (Graduate Engineering & Management National and International) Programme at Case Western Reserve University.

Khamenei appoints new chief for Iran's Revolutionary Guards

  • Iran’s top authority Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has replaced the head of the influential Revolutionary Guards Corps, days after the United States designated the elite group a foreign terrorist organisation.

  • The TV station did not give a reason for the change when it announced the appointment of Brigadier General Hossein Salami to the position. "The Supreme Leader has appointed Salami as the new commander-in-chief of the Guards, who will replace Mohammad Ali Jafari," it said. Major General Jafari had held the post since September 2007.

HIV used to cure babies in America

  • Reports from the United States of America indicate that its scientists have used the deadly HIV to make a gene therapy that has cured about eight infants of severe combined immunodeficiency known as the ‘bubble boy' disease.

  • The reports says the babies who were born with little to no immune protection, now have fully functional immune systems after the operation.

  • The gene therapy is reported to be involving collecting the babies' bone marrow and correcting the genetic defect in their DNA soon after their birth.

Famous Bengali Folk Singer Amar Paul died at the age of 97

  • Amar Paul, an eminent Bengali folk singer passed away due to cardiac arrest in SSKM Hospital at Kolkata, West Bengal at the age of 97.

  • He was born on [latex]19^{th}[/latex] May, 1922, at Brahmanbaria, presently in Bangladesh. In his childhood, he had taken music lessons from his mother Durgasundari Paul and later he learned folk music from Suren Chakraborty and Mani Chakraborty and classical music from Ayat Ali Khan.

  • In the early 1950s, he joined All India Radio as a folk singer and also lent his voice to the number of films including Satyajit Ray’s famous movie “Hirak Rajar Deshe” which brought him instant fame.

  • He was awarded by Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to the folk music of West Bengal. He honored with numerous other awards including West Bengal State Academy of Dance, Music and Visual Arts, and Lalan Puraskar for folk music.
