  • A bipartisan group of half a dozen influential American lawmakers has reintroduced important legislation in the House of Representatives and if enacted, the legislation would ensure that the US State Department treat India as a NATO ally for the purposes of the Arms Export Control Act.

  • The legislation also seeks to advance the US-India strategic relationship. It would send a powerful signal that defence sales to India should be prioritised according to US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, which had worked on this important legislation.

  • Sudan`s security and intelligence chief quit, a day after the defence minister stepped down abruptly as interim leader following the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir and protesters kept up demands for change.

  • Salah Abdallah Mohamed Saleh, known as Salah Gosh, who headed the National Intelligence and Security Service and was once the most influential person in the country after Bashir, was held responsible by protesters for the killing of demonstrators demanding an end to military rule.

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu released a postage stamp and a coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Hundreds of innocent Indian lives were lost when British forces ordered to fire indiscriminately inside the Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab's Amritsar on April 13, 1919. The coin is worth Rs 100.

  • Offering tributes to the fallen, Naidu's message in the visitor's book at the memorial read, "I feel extremely humbled as I pay my homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives fighting the evil hegemony of the oppressive British rule. I salute the martyrs who sacrificed their lives on this very spot 100 years ago."
Pakistan violated ceasefire over 500 times along LoC in J&K since Balakot airstrike

  • In the last few weeks after India's airstrike in Balakot, Pakistan has resorted to more than five hundred ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

  • According to Indian Army's General-Officer-Commanding (GoC) of 16 Corps, Lt General Paramjit Singh, during this period situation arose, as many as hundred times, when Pakistan used weapons, that are generally used during wars, and targetted urban bases. The weapons used include heavy weaponry like mortars and artillery guns.

DoT Approves Merger of Tata Tele Unit & Airtel With Riders

  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has approved the merger of Tata Teleservices with Bharti Airtel Ltd., subject to the condition that it furnishes a Rs 7200 crore bank guarantee.

  • Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha gave his conditional nod for the merger. The guarantees are mostly related to one-time spectrum charges (OTSC) and some deferred airwave charges, according to people aware of the development.

  • Google Pay has partnered with Bullion refiner MMTC-PAMP India to initiate buying and selling of gold through the app to make Google Pay more useful for Indian customers. MMTC-PAMP is India’s only London Bullion Market Association (LBMA)-accredited gold refinery.

  • Through this pact, Google Pay users will be able to buy 99.99 per cent 24-karat gold for any value, which will be stored on behalf of the user in secure vaults by MMTC-PAMP.

  • Google pay users can now buy and sell gold any time at the latest price.

Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mark Boucher: inducted by MCC as honorary life members for outstanding achievements in cricket

  • MCC (the Marylebone Cricket Club) has bestowed the honour of ‘Honorary Life Members’ to Pakistan’s Inzamam-ul-Haq and South Africa’s Mark Boucher for their exemplary achievements in the field of cricket.

  • Former Pakistan skipper and batsman, Inzamam-ul-Haq played 119 Test matches, captained them from 2001-07 and scored 8,829 runs at an average of 50.16, inclusive of 25 centuries.

  • Inzamam-ul-Haq made his international debut in 1991 and featured in Pakistan’s successful 1992 World Cup campaign. He played in a total of 378 ODIs, scoring 11,739 runs at an average of 39.5 and thus became 6th in the list.

  • In 2007, since his retirement from international cricket, he was the head coach of Afghanistan team, after which in 2016, he became Pakistan’s chief selector.

  • Now on becoming an honorary life member of MCC, Inzamam-ul-Haq joins the list of great Pakistan cricketers, namely, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shahid Afridi.

  • Two schemes of the West Bengal government for skill development- “Utkarsh Bangla” and distribution of bicycles to students “Sabooj Sathi” have won the prestigious World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) awards of the United Nations.

  • The "Utkarsh Bangla" project aims at creating a pool of skilled candidates who are industry ready, while under the "Sabooj Sathi" scheme, bicycles are distributed to students between class IX and XII studying in government-run and government-aided schools and madrashas of the state.

  • India has successfully test-fired first indigenously designed and developed long-range sub-sonic cruise missile 'Nirbhay' from a test range in Odisha. The all-weather missile, has a 1,000-kilometre strike range.

  • The missile has been developed by Bengaluru-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a lab under DRDO and can be launched from multiple platforms.
