  • The US House of Representatives, on Wednesday, passed (365-65) the Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act of 2019, which increases the annual limit of family-based immigrant visas offered to citizens of each country and eliminates the country-wise caps on employment-based immigrant visas.

  • This will have a significant impact on nationals of countries such as India, whose case the demand for immigrant visas (which convert to green cards upon admission to the U.S.) exceeds the number of visas available each year, resulting in wait times that could run into decades.
Mr. Khalilzad said the latest round of talks with the Taliban had been the “most productive” and had broadened to include a timeline for both intra-Afghan negotiations and a cease-fire.

  • The U.S. peace envoy to Afghanistan is in Beijing for a previously scheduled meeting, an American Embassy spokesman said on Thursday, amid signs of new momentum in efforts to end Afghanistan’s 17-year war and push by China to boost its influence in the region.

  • The spokesman gave no further details about the visit by Zalmay Khalilzad, but it comes just days after he said that for the first time he can report “substantive” progress on all four issues key to a peace agreement. The spokesman spoke on routine condition of anonymity.

  • The government has received complaints of banks either not sanctioning or delaying disbursement to applicants of the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister of State (independent charge) Hardeep Singh Puri admitted in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

  • Under the scheme, applicants of economically weaker section (EWS), low-income group (LIG) and middle-income group (MIG) can get subsidies on the interest to be paid on housing loans.

  • Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), a public sector bank, has cut its Marginal Cost of Fund-based Lending Rate (MCLR) by 5-10 basis points across various tenors.

  • A basis point is one hundredth of one percentage point. While OBC's one-year MCLR now stands reduced at 8.65 per cent from 8.70 per cent, the six months' MCLR has been reduced to 8.55 per cent from 8.60 per cent earlier.

  • Mukesh Ambani -led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) surpassed IT-major, Tata Consultancy Services(TCS) to become the most valued firm by market capitalization (m-cap).

  • The current m-cap of RIL is Rs 8,11,048.27 crore and that of TCS is Rs 7,99,802.04 crore which is 11,246.23 crores less than RIL.

  • Shares of RIL increased by 2.20 % to Rs 1,279.45 on the BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) and Intra-day it surged 2.55 % to Rs 1,283.85.while the Shares of TCS fell by 2.05 % to Rs 2,131.45.
