At least 40 dead in Russian plane's fiery emergency landing

  • At least 40 people were killed when a Russian airliner burst into flames while making an emergency landing at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport on Sunday evening.

  • The Sukhoi SSJ100 operated by national airline Aeroflot had 73 passengers and five crew members on board when it touched down and sped down a runway spewing huge flames and black smoke.

  • Elena Markovskaya, a spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, said early on Monday that 41 people were killed. But Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said later that 38 survived, implying the death toll was 40.

  • According to the Investigative Committee The victims included one member of the crew and at least two teenagers.

  • National Security Advisor John Bolton said, The United States is sending an aircraft carrier strike group and a bomber task force to the Middle East in a "clear and unmistakable" message to Iran.

  • Mr. Bolton said, In response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings, the United States is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the US Central Command region."

  • Mr. Bolton said, The deployment is aimed at sending "a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force".
End violence, work towards peace: Trump to Palestinians

  • Strongly condemning the rocket attacks against Israel by terrorist groups, US President Donald Trump on Sunday asked Palestinians to "end violence" and work towards peace.

  • "Once again, Israel faces a barrage of deadly rocket attacks by terrorist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad." Trump said, "We support Israel 100 per cent in its defense of its citizens". According to news reports, terrorist groups have fired about 600 rockets towards Israel.

  • In response, Israel has launched about 250 air strikes against terrorist groups in the region.

PM Narendra Modi in Cyclone Fani-hit Odisha to review situation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar today to visit districts hit by Cyclone Fani and take stock of the situation, days after more than 35 people died and large parts of the coastal areas were badly affected by the “extremely severe” storm.

  • Cyclone Fani barrelled through coastal Odisha, causing widespread destruction and leaving hundreds homeless and grappling with water shortage and power cuts. At least 39 people died as Cyclone Fani, which means the hood of a snake, pummelled the eastern state.

  • The Prime Minister was received by Governor Ganeshi Lal, chief minister Naveen Patnaik and Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar.

  • Modi will undertake an aerial survey of Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore district. The Prime Minister will then review the relief and restoration work with the state government officials at the airport when he returns.
CJI sexual harassment case: SC denies report that Justices Nariman, Chandrachud met Justice Bobde

  • The Supreme Court denied a media report that two of its judges — Justices Rohinton F. Nariman and D.Y. Chandrachud — met Justice S.A. Bobde, who is chairing an in-house committee inquiring into allegations of sexual harassment against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

  • A statement issued by the court’s Secretary-General said the report was “wholly incorrect” that the two judges met Justice Bobde on the evening of [latex]3^{rd}[/latex May (Friday). The statement categorically said the Justice Bobde panel was examining the allegations without any input from any other judge of the Supreme Court.
EC rejects plea for advancement of poll timings during Ramzan

  • The Election Commission has rejected a request for advancing the commencement of poll timing from 7 a.m. to 5 a.m. in the coming three phases, during Ramzan.

  • The Commission took the decision on a petition by Delhi-based advocate Mohammad Nizamuddin Pasha, following a Supreme Court directive on May 2. Listing the reasons, the EC said that under the current poll timing of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (11 hours), “our polling team needs to spend at least 15-16 hours of active time in the poll process ensuring that no mistake occurs.”

  • The same applied to the security forces who guarded the whole process. The EC said advancing the commencement of poll “will also advance the arrival of polling agents, many of who even now come late and are not able to reach by 6 a.m. and which hinder starting the mock poll process in absence of their arrival.”

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is understood to be weighing a plan to ‘incentivise’ lenders to take errant borrowers to bankruptcy court.

  • It’s part of the regulatory countermove that RBI is working on to overcome hurdles in the wake of a recent Supreme Court ruling. A month ago, the apex court struck down RBI’s [latex]12^{th}[/latex] February, 2018 directive that gave defaulting companies 180 days to agree on a resolution plan with lenders or be taken to bankruptcy court to recover debt of Rs 2,000 crore and above.

  • According to people aware of the matter, RBI is considering a proposal to assign a ‘lower risk weight’ on loans to companies against which action has been initiated under the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code (IBC) of 2016.

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) launched an action plan for Healthy Oceans and Sustainable Blue Economies for the Asia and Pacific region at its 52nd annual meeting of its board of governors in Fiji.

  • “The prosperity of our region depends on healthy oceans and sustainable development,” said ADB president Mr. Takehiko Nakao.

  • “We must work toward a more resilient future, where humanity and oceans thrive together.

  • “The action plan will support the efforts of ADB’s developing member countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 14 Life Below Water.”

  • The action plan for Healthy Oceans and Sustainable Blue Economies will expand financing and technical assistance for ocean health and marine economy projects to $5 billion from 2019 to 2024, including co-financing from partners.
YES Bank declines 5% on Icra downgrade

  • Shares of YES Bank slumped almost 5 per cent in morning trade on Monday and looked on course to break their two-day winning run after the domestic rating agency Icra downgraded the bank's long-term bond ratings and guided for a negative outlook.

Archery Association of India named Sunil Sharma as acting president to start with the polling procedure

  • Archery Association of India (AAI) named Sunil Sharma, its senior vice president (also VP of Jammu and Kashmir Archery Association) in accordance with Article 24 of AAI Constitution (as approved by the Supreme Court on 4th December, 2017) as its acting president to start the election process.
