US and Taliban agree in principle to peace framework, envoy says

  • The US Special Representative for Afghanistan said Officials from the United States and the Taliban have agreed in principle to a framework that could eventually bring Afghanistan's long-running war to an end.

  • US Embassy in Kabul, Zalmay Khalilzad said the framework for peace would see the insurgent group vow to prevent the country from being used as a hub for terrorism in return for a US military withdrawal.
Pak to complete fencing of 2,600-km-long Afghan border by next year'

  • The Pakistan Army has said that the fencing of a substantial portion of the over 2,600-km-long Afghan border has been completed and the rest will be finished by next year to check the movement of terrorists.

  • Pakistan has spent billions of rupees for putting fence on the porous border.

  • Army spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor said that the fencing of the entire border will be completed next year with the cost of about Rs 70 billion.

  • HRD Ministry reformed up a Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) from current 20 to 30 in New Delhi.

  • Last year, 19 institution got the title of eminent institution and the selected government institutions were granted upto Rs. 1,000 crore provided and the private institutions were given the freedom to decide their fee structure and courses.
Third Bridge inaugurated by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Named ‘Atal Setu’ in Goa

Key Highlights:

  • Third bridge was inaugurated by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The bridge has been named as ‘Atal Setu’ after former prime minister of India late Atal Bihari Bajpai.

  • It is four-lane, 5.1-kilometer long and the third Cable bridge across river Mandovi in Panaji, Goa.

  • The bridge weighs 2.5 lakh tonnes which is equivalent to the weight of aircraft  570 Boeing.

  • The bridge is constructed by the GIDC (Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation)  and engineering and construction major Larsen and Toubro.

  • The bridge is built at a cost of Rs 850 crore.

  • The two bridges already present in Goa are Mandovi Bridge and Zurai Bridge.

  • The bridge will be open for four wheeler vehicles from Jan 29 but two and three wheelers will not be allowed on the bridge.
Patnaik launches Rs 1,100 crore Infra projects in Ganjam district

  • Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Naveen Patnaik launched various development and welfare projects worth Rs 1100 crore during his one day visit at Ganjam district.

  • Naveen Patnaik laid foundation stone for 231 projects worth Rs 715 crore and inaugurated 48 projects in the Ganjam District of Odisha.

  • Some of the Major Projects inaugurated by Naveen Patnaik are 10-bedded geriatric ward (Rs 40 crore), bleaching store (Rs 29.64 crore), district vaccine store (Rs 79 crore) and Construction of OPD for eye department at the district headquarter hospital and city hospital.

  • Foundation stone for various projects were laid during the visit of Naveen Patnaik including Railway over bridge at Jagannathpur and Ambapua with estimated cost of Rs 30 and Rs 35 crore respectively and 9 Major Rail project (Rs 113.51 crore).

  • Foundation stone were also laid for the development of infrastructure of 11 tourism projects costing Rs. 4.78 crore in the district.

  • The Foundation for an additional project costing Rs 49 crore for double laning of a 15-km road from Karapalli to Loudigaon were also laid by Naveen Patnaik.
PM Modi's Bengal rally shifted as venue pre-booked by TMC

  • The BJP has decided to shift the venue of PM Narendra Modi's rally in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas' Thakurnagar to another nearby ground.

  • The ground, where PM Modi was supposed to address the mega-gathering on February 2, was booked by the Trinamool Congress for a week-long religious programme. The venue did not meet the security requirements.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, PAIIMS at Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

  • Narendra Modi also inaugurated the Super Speciality blocks of government medical college hospitals in Madurai, Tirunelveli and Thanjuvar built at a total cost of Rs.450 crores contributed by the Centre and Rs. 85 crores contributed by the State.

  • PM Modi also inaugurated 12 Passport Seva Kendra across Tamil Nadu.

  • PThe Institute is to be built within 45 months at an allocated budget of Rs. 1,264 crores.

  • AIIMS, Madurai will be a 750 bedded hospital with 30 Emergency/Trauma beds, 75 beds in the ICU & Critical Care unit, 215 beds in Super Specialty unit, will also offer 100 MBBS seats.

  • West Indies captain Jason Holder has become the first player from the country in 45 years to top the list of all-rounders in the International Cricket Council Test Player Rankings after slamming an unbeaten double-century that helped script a memorable 381-run win over England in the first Test in Bridgetown.
