Sarojini Naidu’s Birth Anniversary

  • 13th February is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the Nightingale of India Sarojini Naidu. She was born on 13 February, 1879 in Hyderabad to scientist and philosopher Aghornath Chattopadhyaya and Barada Sundari Devi.

  • She was the first Indian woman President of the Indian National Congress and also the first woman governor of an Indian state that is Governor of United Province which is now known as Uttar Pradesh.

U.S. lawmakers reach tentative deal to avoid government shutdown

  • U.S. congressional negotiators reached a tentative deal to try to avert another partial government shutdown, but congressional aides said it did not contain the $5.7 billion President Donald Trump wants for a border wall.

  • Republican Senator Richard Shelby told reporters said that We reached an agreement in principle on funding border security programs through Sept. 30.

  • Shelby said Our staffs are going to be working feverishly to put all the particulars together. Neither he nor three other senior lawmakers flanking him provided any details of the tentative pact.
World Government Summit’s seventh session held in Dubai

  • The seventh session of the World Government Summit began, 10th February 2019, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). More than 4,000 people from 140 countries participated in the event.

  • The summit opened with the speech of Mohammed Abdullah Ak Gergawi, minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future, along with Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of World Economic Forum (WEF).
Afghan government fires election commission

  • The Afghan government fired its Election commission more than three months after chaotic parliamentary elections the results of which have still not been announced and ahead of July’s controversial presidential vote.

  • President Ashraf Ghani is among the candidates for president in an election that was to be held in April but was postponed because of the overwhelming number of complaints about the chaos that surrounded October’s elections for Parliament.

Immediate steps taken for the Promotion and Protection of Maithili Language and its scripts by the HRD Ministry

Key Highlights:

  • The Committee, constituted by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development in 2018, for making a report for the Promotion and Protection of Maithili Language and its scripts, has submitted its report to the ministry with several recommendations.

  • After examining the report the HRD ministry has decided to take immediate action on some of the recommendations which include Establishing a Script and Manuscript Centre at Darbhanga in either Kameshwar Singh Sanskrit University or Lalit Narayan Mithila University.

  • Early completion of the work pertaining to Unicode Scripts of Mithilakshar by Technology Development of Indian Languages (TDIL).

  • Preparing audio-visual teaching materials for teaching the Mithilakshar scripts.

  • The use of the Mithila script has been on a decline since the last 100 years. Despite having been accorded a constitutional status, the Mithila language is getting developed in a composite manner, as the script is not used, affecting the culture. The HRD Ministry keeping this is mind had formed the committee and plans to take immediate action to implement the recommendations.

  • LAWASIA, in association with the Bar Association of India hosted its 1st LAWASIA Human Rights Conference in New Delhi with a motive to explore a broad range of human rights issues of relevance in the Asia Pacific region, including Gender, Sexuality and Human Rights, New Technologies, Privacy and Mass Surveillance, Experiences and Challenges of Human Rights Lawyers, Aggressive Policing and Human Rights, Freedom of the Press in the Digital Age, Cross-border Migration & its Conflicts, climate Change, Water Conflicts & Human Rights and Business and Human Rights.

  • This conference was inaugurated by ice President Shri. M. Venkaiah Naidu with the theme “State Power, Business and Human Rights: Contemporary Challenges”.

  • It provides opportunity for lawyers and associated professional members to exchange insights and expertise on topics of significance.

  • President of LAWASIA, Mr. Christopher Leong, President Bar Association of India, Dr. Lalit Bhasin, Vice President, LAWASIA, Shri. Shyam Divan were present in the occasion.
First joint initiative signed between India and Norway to combat Marine Pollution
Key Highlights:

  • India signed a letter of intent with Norway to fight marine pollution and establishes the India-Norway Marine Pollution Initiative.

  • Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) signed the letter establishing the initiative with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • Additional Secretary, MoEFCC, Mr. Anil Kumar Jain and Norway’s Ambassador to India, Mr. Nils RagnarKamsvag signed the joint initiative.

  • A statement from the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM)revealed that this is the first joint initiative under this partnership and India-Norway Marine Pollution will fight the fastest growing environmental concern, which is marine pollution.
Two day Conference on Unani Medicine for Public Health inaugurated at New Delhi

`Exercise Rahat´ concluded in Jaipur on 12th February

  • Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Exercise `Exercise Rahat´ concluded in Jaipur, Rajasthan. It was demonstrated in Jaipur, Kota and Alwar in Rajasthan.

  • Indian Army was represented by Jaipur based Sapta Shakti Command. Representatives from Armed Forces, National Disaster Management Response Mechanism (NDMRM), SDMA Rajasthan and DLMAs participated in the exercise.

  • With a view to cooperate efforts for humanitarian assistance and Disaster Relief operations NDMA coordinated the exercise.

  • The exercise was conducted in three places, in Jaipur it was in the form of a table top exercise and at Kota and Alwar it demonstrated on-ground capability and coordination among various stakeholders.

  • A curtain raiser has been organized at Jaipur Military Station on 4th February as an introduction of the exercise.

Payment gateway firms split on RBI intervention
Key Highlights:

  • The Reserve Bank of India’s intention to regulate payment gateway service providers has received a mixed response from industry players, with some welcoming the move and others cautioning that close regulatory scrutiny may cause operational challenges and stifle innovation.

  • The central bank had announced last week that it will release a white paper for discussion and consult companies before introducing regulations.

  • Vishwas Patel, founder of CCAvenue Payment gateway, believes the sector doesn’t need more regulations as it already has all the safety networks in place to ensure customer money is protected.

  • Getting loans from banks for buying electric vehicles is likely to get easier as the government has decided to take measures to facilitate lending by banks for all varieties of these vehicles including erickshaws and e-autos.

  • Prime minister’s office (PMO) has directed the department of financial services to take the necessary steps and has also asked the revenue department to offer attractive tax incentives—including faster depreciation on EVs—to encourage corporates to go electric rather than buy conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.
RBI penalises seven banks for violating various norms

  • Seven Banks were penalised by the Reserve Bank of India for violating various norms. Three banks- HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and IDBI Bank were fined Rs 2 million each for non-compliance with various directions issued by RBI on Know Your Customer (KYC) norms and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) standards.

  • RBI said This action is based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the banks with their customers.

  • New Zealand won the Twenty20 International (T20I) 3-match series at Seddon Park Ground, Hamilton, New Zealand beating India in the final match by 4 runs.

  • New Zealand’s wicket keeper-batsman, Tim Seifert, won the player of the series award. He scored 138 runs at a strike-rate of 173.75 and an average of 46.33 on the 3 matches. He also picked 3 catches as the wicket keeper.

  • Rohit Sharma, with 2,288 runs broke the record of New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill (2.272 runs) to become leading run-scorer in T20I history.

  • With 20 fifty-plus scores, Rohit Sharma now holds the record for the highest number of fifties, going past Virat Kohli who had the record of 19.

  • Rohit Sharma became the third cricketer to hit 100 T20I sixes after scoring 102 sixes, while Chris Gayle and Guptill both have 103. With this he also became the first Indian cricketer to smash 100 sixes in a T20I series.

  • Rohit Sharma’s 349 sixes in international cricket (ODIs, T20I and Tests) has now made the Indian cricketer with most sixes in international cricket.
World record of most wides bowled in a Test broken after 11 years

  • As many as 35 wide balls have been delivered in the ongoing third Windies-England Test, breaking the nearly 11-year-old record of most wides bowled in a Test.

  • The previous record was set in the Test between Windies and Australia in June 2008, which witnessed 34 wides. Windies' bowlers have bowled 24, while English bowlers have bowled 11 wides so far.
