• Security forces in the central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan have stormed the home of former President Almazbek Atambayev in an attempt to detain him.


• Mr. Atambayev's supporters clashed with the troops and one officer died from gunshot wounds, officials said.


• It is understood Mr. Atambayev is still inside his compound, on the outskirts of the capital Bishkek.

• Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro blamed U.S. sanctions as he ordered his government’s representatives not to travel to Barbados for scheduled talks with the political opposition.


• Mr. Maduro “has decided to not send the Venezuelan delegation” for talks with representatives of opposition leader Juan Guaido “due to the grave and brutal aggression” being “continuously carried out by the Trump administration against Venezuela,” a government statement said.

• U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has announced to remove travel restrictions placed on Pakistani diplomats based in America over a year ago, a media report said.


• The US State Department confirmed the development to The News International on Wednesday the travel controls were being removed from the Pakistani diplomatic personnel assigned to the Pakistan’s Embassy in Washington D.C. and their dependents.

• The UN and its leadership is in contact with India and Pakistan at “various levels”, with Secretary General Antonio Guterres reiterating his appeal to all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint amidst tensions over Kashmir, the UN chief’s spokesperson has said.


• The spokesperson was responding to a question as to why Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is reluctant to take on the issue of India and Pakistan.

• Officials in the Home Ministry fished out original copies of the “Instrument of the Accession” signed with 562 princely states during the time of Independence to make a legal basis for the amendment to Article 370 taking away the special status of Jammu & Kashmir.


• The copies pulled out from the archival records were matched with the Instrument of Accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh, the ruler of J&K, with India on October 26, 1947. “We matched the accession document of J&K with that signed with the other princely States, each and every word was the same,” an official said.

• Radhanagari and Koyna dams in western Maharashtra has led to floods in Sangli and Kolhapur with at least 139 villages marooned over the last 48 hours, a district administration official said.


• India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall warning for Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur region on August 8 and 9 which could worsen flood conditions in western Maharashtra.

• The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to accord urgent hearing to a plea challenging the Presidential Order on Article 370 which revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.


• The matter was mentioned for urgent listing before a bench headed by Justice N V Ramana and the court said that the plea would be heard in the due course.


• Advocate M L Sharma, who has filed the petition, urged the bench that his plea is listed for hearing either on August 12 or 13. The bench asked Sharma as to whether he has cured the defects in his petition.

• In a bid to boost consumption demand hit by the NBFC crisis, the RBI reduced risk-weights for consumer loans, in its monetary policy on Wednesday. Consumer loans include consumer durable loans, auto loans, credit card and personal loans.


• From 125 per cent, the RBI has brought down the risk weight to 100 per cent for consumer loans (excluding credit cards).

• Serena Williams won her first match since losing the Wimbledon final, beating Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday night in the second round of the Rogers Cup.


• The 37-year-old Williams has won the event three times, all in Toronto. She will face Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Zhang Shuai of China in the third round.

• Former President Pranab Mukherjee will be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, on Thursday. The 83-year-old, who served as India’s President from 2012-2017, has a political career spanning about five decades.
