• The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is a United Nations observance each [latex]4^{th}[/latex] June. It was established on [latex]19^{th}[/latex] August 1982.


• Originally focused on victims of the 1982 Lebanon War, its purpose expanded to "acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse. This day affirms the UN's commitment to protect the rights of children.

• Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that the country's currency is to be replaced with a new generation of banknotes.


• Kenyans must return their 1,000 shilling ($10; £8) notes to banks by 1 October, in a bid to fight money laundering, counterfeits and corruption.


• New banknotes are to be brought in over the coming months with other denominations being phased out gradually.


• Some Kenyans have expressed anger over the new banknote design, which features an image of a statue of Kenya's first President, Jomo Kenyatta - the current president's father.

• US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who is among the few people with access to President Donald Trump’s under-construction but ambitious West Asia peace plan was reportedly not very optimistic about its prospects in a closed-door meeting with American Jewish leaders last week.


• “One might argue” that the plan is “unexecutable” and it might not “gain traction”. Pompeo said, according to a report in The Washington Post based on a leaked audio recording of the meeting.

• Donald Trump is to meet Prime Minister Theresa May for "substantial" talks on the second day of the US president's three-day state visit to the UK.


• Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt will be among the senior ministers present at the talks, where issues such as climate change will be discussed.

• Sudan's military leaders say they are scrapping all existing agreements with the main opposition coalition and will hold elections within nine months.


• The announcement came as the military faced mounting international condemnation for their violent attack on protesters in the capital, Khartoum, which reportedly left at least 30 dead.

• Former Supreme Court judge A. K. Patnaik said he has called for some more information from Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), and the Delhi Police, to find the truth behind the allegations of a “larger conspiracy” to frame the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.


• Justice Patnaik was appointed by the Supreme Court to hold an inquiry into the sensational allegations, including the fixing of Benches, after a lawyer claimed that a larger conspiracy was at work in the apex court.


• Utsav Singh Bains had made the allegations when the apex court was hearing the sexual harassment charges against the CJI, in which the three-member in-house inquiry committee did not find any substance.

• A plan to build 111 naval utility helicopters in India under the ‘strategic partnership’ model to replace the navy’s outdated fleet of French-designed Chetak choppers moved forward, with the opening of the technical bids of the foreign firms competing for the project.

• Fitch Ratings has downgraded the ratings of ICICI Bank and Axis Bank due to ‘challenges’ faced by them and lowering of India’s operating environment.


• Fitch Ratings has downgraded ICICI Bank’s Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to ‘BB+’ from ‘BBB-’ and its Viability Rating to ‘bb+’ from ‘bbb-’.


• The outlook on the IDR is Stable. Fitch has also affirmed ICICI Bank’s Support Rating at 3 and Support Rating Floor at ‘BB+’, it said in a statement late.

• Former Indian President of India Pratibha Patil has been conferred the "Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca" (Order of the Aztec Eagle) - the highest civilian award of Mexico given to foreigners.


• The Ambassador of Mexico to India, Melba Pria, conferred the award on Patil - who created history as this country's first woman President (2007-2012), at a special ceremony held in the MCCIA Bhavan, Pune.


• Ms Patil, 85, becomes only the second Indian head of state to get the award. Earlier, the late President S. Radhakrishna had been conferred this honour.

• Comptroller and Auditor General of India Rajiv Mehrishi has been elected as external auditor of the World Health Organization (WHO) for four years from 2020 to 2023, an official statement said.


• Mehrishi was elected at the 72nd World Health Assembly in Geneva last month with a majority.


• Apart from India, others competing for the position were the Auditors General of Congo, France, Ghana, Tunisia and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
