• World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on 31 May. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe.


• The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to more an 7 million deaths each year worldwide, including 890,000 of which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.


• The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987.

• Austria has named a top lawyer, Brigitte Bierlein, to be interim chancellor - the first woman to occupy the post - ahead of early elections.


• She replaces Sebastian Kurz, whose government lost a confidence vote in parliament over a video sting scandal.


• The scandal involved Mr Kurz's far-right ally Heinz-Christian Strache, secretly filmed offering public contracts to a woman posing as a Russian oligarch's niece.

• US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs on all goods coming from Mexico in a bid to curb illegal immigration.

• The Centre is mulling a new version of its flagship “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” scheme that will focus on educating women about their rights, an official of the women and child development (WCD) ministry has said.

• Large parts of central and northwestern India will continue to face a heat wave this week, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday as the mercury touched the 48-degree mark in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur town.


• An IMD bulletin said the heat wave is likely to continue in Vidarbha, parts of Madhya Pradesh, isolated pockets of Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh over the next two to three days.

• The Supreme Court asked Assam’s coordinator for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to ensure that a fair procedure is adopted in dealing with the claims and objections filed by those excluded from the list, currently being updated to weed out illegal immigrants.


• The court’s advice comes a day after media reported on the plight of a retired Indian Army subedar who has been declared a foreigner by a tribunal in Assam. His name reportedly did not figure in the draft NRC published on July [latex]30^{th}[/latex], 2018 in which names of 2.89 crore of the 3.29 crore applicants were included.

• IDBI Bank reported its 10th consecutive quarterly loss in the March 2019 quarter, even as the top management said it would turn profitable in the third quarter on the back of huge recoveries and monetisation of non-core assets.


• The bank also expects to come out of the restrictive prompt corrective action (PCA) framework by the third or fourth quarter of the current financial year.

• Court asks for confirmation of prison cell in India. • The Export Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) reported a turnaround performance, posting a net profit of ₹82 crore in FY19, against a net loss of ₹2,924 crore in the year-ago period.


• While the bank’s funded loan portfolio saw a de-growth of ₹13,915 crore to ₹93,617 crore during the financial year, non-funded portfolio, including project-related and financial guarantees, increased by ₹856 crore to ₹14,096 crore.
