  • The Supreme Court observed that there can be no restrictions on alliances between political parties in a democracy as it dismissed a petition by the Hindu Mahasabha challenging the post-poll alliance in Maharashtra between the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress.

  • The petition was dismissed a day after Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray became the chief minister of Maharashtra with support from the NCP and the Congress, ending over a month of political uncertainty in the state where assembly elections on October 21 produced a hung house in which no single party had a majority on its own.

  • India and Japan are expected to explore ways to strengthen security cooperation during their first foreign and defence ministerial dialogue in New Delhi on November 30 to give greater depth to their special strategic partnership.

  • The 2+2 dialogue, which has been held at the level of officials since 2010, will also prepare the grounds for the visit next month of Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for the annual summit with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. The two premiers are expected to meet in Guwahati in the middle of December.

  • Modi and Abe had decided to elevate the 2+2 dialogue to the ministerial level during their last annual summit in Japan in October 2018. India has such a dialogue only with Japan and the US.
FASTag deadline extended till December 15

  • The Union government announced that the December 1 deadline for all toll collection centres of its highways to switch to a cashless “FASTag” system will be pushed back by a fortnight, a decision meant to ease a transition that officials predict will come with significant teething troubles.

  • A FASTag, a radio frequency identification (RFID) device, will be required by all vehicles passing through the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)-run highways from December 15.

  • Commuters will, for now, have the option to pay cash, but that will be done through only one lane and the charges will be double.

  • The National Investigation Agency on Friday arrested Sumitra Punem, a Maoist commander involved in the May 2013 attack on the convoy of Congress leaders and workers in Chhattisgarh’s Darbha Valley, in which 27 people were killed including Mahendra Karma.

  • Punam, NIA said, is a Local Organisation Squad (LOS) commander and was a team member of the Darbha Division Committee of CPI (Maoist) formation in Chhattisgarh, which executed the deadly attack. 26 more Maoists are still wanted in the case.

  • About 100-150 cadres of Maoists had targeted the convoy of Parivartan Yatra of the Congress Party in Jheeram Ghati in Darbha on May 25, 2013, with bombs, indiscriminate firing, and grenades as part of the organization’s Tactical Counter Offensive Campaign (TCOC).

Andhra Pradesh government to set up university for skill development

  • The latest numbers mark the longest continuous deceleration in gross domestic product (GDP) growth, which has been slowing for six straight quarters.
