• A bishop has been jointly ordained by the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Pope for the first time following a provisional agreement between Beijing and the Vatican signed last September.


• The joint consecration of Yao Shun from Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region in northern China, is a sign of changing ties between China – where religious organizations and heads have to be approved by the CPC – and the Holy See amid intermittent crackdown on Christianity.


• The deal last September allowed the Vatican to have a say in the appointment of bishops in the churches run by the CPC.

• The Cabinet approved setting up of 75 medical colleges in the next three years with the Centre spending ₹24,375 crore on them.


• The colleges would be set up in areas with at least 200-bed district hospital and having no such college. The move would lead to an addition of at least 15,700 MBBS seats.

• The Chairman of the Press Council of India, Chandramauli Kumar Prasad, said on Wednesday that he did not support the communication blockade in Kashmir in the intervention petition of the Council in the Supreme Court.


• In a letter addressed to the Chairman of The Hindu Group Publishing Private Ltd., N. Ram, he said a plain reading of the intervention application showed that he had “not supported the communication blockade”, and he would be willing to resign if he was proved wrong.

• The Constitution Bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi was told that the first Mughal Emperor, Babur, may not have built the ‘Babri Masjid’ structure in Ayodhya.

• Mobile phone services were restored in five districts of Jammu after remaining suspended for 25 days since August 5 when the Centre announced its move to scrap the special status granted to the state under Article 370 and to divide Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories. The mobile services, however, remain suspended in the Valley.


• The districts that got back mobile services were Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Rajouri, and Poonch, reports ANI. On August 17, mobile internet services were restored in five districts of Jammu region - Jammu, Reasi, Samba, Kathu, and Udhampur.

• Bank credit contracted by ₹48,792 crore in the financial year so far (up to August 16), even as deposits surged by ₹1,21,990 crore in the same period.


• However, in the corresponding period last year, bank credit expanded by ₹33,664 crore.
