• A German chemical wholesaler, Brenntag, has denied circumventing EU export rules on restricted chemicals, some of which were delivered to Syria in 2014.

• Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday told the Lok Sabha that the government was negotiating with the U.S. the issue of withdrawing the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) status to Indian business houses.


• The Minister said the process of negotiations should be left to “those in the room who are handling the talks”, but he also said the U.S. move was a sign that Indian businesses had grown and could compete globally.

• India’s tariffs are not that high compared to other developing countries, government sources told Reuters, reacting to United States President Donald Trump’s call to withdraw what he said were very high tariffs.


• Earlier Trump tweeted that he looked forward to meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 summit in Japan, but said that for years India had put “very high tariffs against the United States”. Adding: “This is unacceptable and the tariffs must be withdrawn!”

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday arrived in Japan for the G20 Summit during which he will attend important plurilateral meetings and meet with the world leaders including US President Donald Trump.

• The Lok Sabha cleared the Special Economic Zones (Amendment) Bill, 2019 on Wednesday, replacing an ordinance on the same issue.


• Defending the bill, Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal said international investors wanted a stable and predictable policy to bring investments.

• Kolkata-based UCO Bank is hopeful of recovering close to ₹8,000 crore from stressed assets in the current fiscal.


• According to AK Goel, MD, and CEO, UCO Bank, the aim would be to recover around ₹2,000 crore every quarter. The bank is hopeful of recovering around ₹1,000 crore from the resolution of cases referred to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code by September this year.

• Shanghai International Film Festival, Director Bijukumar Damodaran has received the Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award for the film, Veyil Marangal (Trees Under the Sun).


• This is for the first Indian film to win a major award at the festival. The film was one among the 3,964 entries submitted from 112 countries in the prestigious Golden Goblet Award competition.

• The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Government of India has extended the tenure of Amitabh Kant, CEO(Chief Executive Officer) of Government’s think tank NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India), by two years, up to June 30, 2021.

• Vijaya Nirmala, an Indian film actress, producer and director known for her works predominantly in Telugu cinema, passed away on Thursday, June 27 at the Continental Hospital in Gachibowli, Hyderabad.


• The actress was said suffering from age-related illness. She was admitted to the Continental Hospital, where she is said to have suffered cardiac arrest and breathed her last.
