• Iran has released nine out of 12 Indians who were on board the ship MT Riah that was detained in early July, official sources said Thursday.


• However, 21 Indians are still in detention in Iran — three from MT Riah and 18 from British oil tanker Stena Impero which was seized last week by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Strait of Hormuz for alleged violation of international maritime rules.

• Ukraine on Thursday seized a Russian tanker for its alleged involvement in the capture of three Ukrainian Navy vessels by Russia, prompting Moscow to warn of consequences if any Russian citizens were “taken hostage”.


• The crew members were later freed by Ukraine and were on their way home, but the tanker remained in Ukrainian custody in the Danube river port of Izmail, a spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Kyiv said by telephone.

• Attorney General William Barr said in a statement he had directed the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to schedule the executions of five inmates.


• Mr. Barr said the five had been convicted of murders or rapes of children or the elderly.

• Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Thursday informed the Lok Sabha that the government had decided to extend the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha till August 7.


• The session, which began on June 17, was scheduled to end on July 26, but the government decided to extend it by another 12 days.


• The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs in New Delhi, sources said.

• The Parliament approved the amendment to the Right To Information (RTI Act) on Thursday, with the Rajya Sabha passing it after negating an opposition-sponsored motion to send it to a House committee for greater scrutiny.


• The motion was negated by 117 members voting against the motion and 75 members voting in favor. This happened after high drama in the House over what opposition charged was "intimidation" by the treasury benches to get the motion for sending the amendment to the RTI Act to the Select Committee rejected.

• The Triple Talaq Bill was cleared from the Lok Sabha on Thursday with 303 votes in favour and 82 against the bill.


• The Bill will now be tabled in Rajya Sabha, where the opposition is numerically higher than the ruling side.

• The state assembly passed the Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Bill on Thursday amid opposition protests over a clause that compels the institutes to provide an undertaking that they will not allow any “anti-national” activity on the campus.


• The Bill aims to bring 27 private universities in the state under an umbrella law, and also enforce transparency on fees and the admission process.


• The Bill was passed by voice vote even as the Samajwadi Party objected to some of its sections and demanded that it should be referred to a select committee.
