  • William, the Duke of Cambridge, was making the trip on behalf of his 93-year-old grandmother Queen Elizabeth, New Zealand's head of state, following a request from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

  • He arrived in Christchurch on Thursday afternoon and on Friday visited Christchurch Hospital to meet survivors recovering from injuries from the attacks, before he was set to visit the two mosques where a gunman killed 50 worshippers on March 15.

WHO issued Guidelines on Use of Screen for kids under 5

Key Highlights:

  • With an aim to develop healthy youths, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued recommendations on the use of sedentary screen which includes watching television or videos and playing computer games for children under 5-year-old. This is the first such guidelines which are released by the United Nations Agency.

  • The recommendations suggest that infants less than one-year-old should not be exposed to electronic screens at all and Children under 5 year should not be allowed more than one hour of “sedentary screen time” per day.

  • The guideline underlines the significance of Healthy physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep habits in early life that moulds them into an active adult.

  • Parents must be assured that under 5 years old should be physically active get adequate sleep to help develop good lifelong habits and prevent obesity and other diseases in later life.

  • The guidelines are designed to reduce inactive behaviour and thereby overcome obesity, overweight, diabetes, hypertension and some forms of cancer.

  • Kids between the age of 1 and 3 should spend 3 hours a day doing physical activity.

General Elections 2019: "Pro-Incumbency Wave In Country For First Time," Says PM Modi In Varanasi

  • A day after his massive roadshow in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will file his election papers today in the Uttar Pradesh temple town from where he is seeking re-election.

  • Several top BJP leaders and allies in the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are in Varanasi to join in a show of strength as PM Modi files papers to contest the national election.

  • Before heading to the election centre, PM Modi addressed thousands of BJP workers.

  • "A pro-incumbency wave has been seen in country for the first time after independence. People across the nation are saying... Fir Ek Baar...?" PM Modi prompted. "Modi Sarkar," the workers chanted on cue.
Government extends ban on import of milk products from China

  • The government extended the ban on import of milk and its products, including chocolates, from China till laboratories at ports for testing presence of toxic chemical melamine are upgraded.
  • Food regulator FSSAI had recommended extending the ban until all labs at ports are modernised to test the chemical.

  • The ban was first imposed in September 2008 and extended subsequently from time to time. The ban was imposed on apprehensions of presence of melamine in some milk consignments from China. Melamine is a toxic chemical used for making plastics and fertilisers.
Lok Sabha elections over in Karnataka, parties now prepare for two assembly bypolls

  • Bypolls to two assembly seats – Chincholi and Kundgol – will be held in Karnataka on [latex]19^{th}[/latex] May.

  • Chincholi fell vacant when Congress lawmaker Umesh Jadhav resigned in March and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) the same month. Jadhav was later named as the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Gulbarga against Congress’s Mallikarjun Kharge. The by-poll to Kundgol was necessitated after Congress lawmaker C S Shivalli passed away last month.

  • The Congress is likely to field Shivalli’s widow, Kusuma, from Kundgol and Subhash Rathod, a former BJP leader, from Chincholi, which is reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates.
Two Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists arrested by NIA

  • The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested two Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists who are residents of Pulwama district, Jammu and Kashmir.

  • The terrorists had been detained in J&K under Public Safety Act. They were in regular contact with another accused, Sajjad Ahmad, who was specially sent by the terror group to Delhi NCR to set up hideouts and radicalise Muslim youths.
India’s crude oil production declines for eighth consecutive year in FY19

  • At a time when the country is already facing crude oil supply shocks due to the US sanctions on Iran and Venezuela, India’s domestic crude production declined for the eighth consecutive year in financial year 2018-2019.

  • The country's oil production in 2018-2019 declined 4.15 per cent to 34,203 thousand metric tonne (TMT), as compared to 35,684 TMT produced in FY18.

Axis Bank back to black with ₹1,505 crore net

  • Private sector lender Axis Bank continued to report lower bad loans even as it posted a net profit of ₹1,505 crore for the Jan-March period compared to a loss of ₹2,189 crore during the same period of the previous fiscal.

  • Gross and net bad loans fell for the fourth consecutive quarter, which resulted in provision figures dropping to a 12-quarter low.

  • The bank’s gross NPA ratio was at 5.26% at the end of March, compared to 6.77% the year earlier.

  • Shares in Microsoft rallied some 5% to $130.59 in early Wall Street trade after a robust earnings report a day earlier.

  • At its current levels, Microsoft is the world's most valuable company, ahead of Apple and Amazon, which last year topped $1 trillion before slipping back.

  • Dawn editor and Columnist Cyril Almeida from Pakistan has won the IPI’s (International Press Institute) World Press Freedom Hero award in 2019 for his “critical” and “tenacious coverage” of the civil-military relations in Pakistan.

Japan creates world’s 1st artificial crater on asteroid

  • Japanese scientists have successfully created the first-ever artificial crater on an asteroid, which gave some clue on how the solar system evolved.
  • Yuichi Tsuda, who is the project manager of Hayabusa2 confirmed the crater from images captured by the probe located 1,700 meters (5,500 feet) from the asteroid’s surface.

  • Hayabusa2 space probe shot a projectile at the Ryugu asteroid around 340 million kilometers from Earth, as part of the probe’s mission to explore the origin of life and the evolution of the solar system.

  • The mission was launched in December 2014 and is scheduled to return to Earth with its samples in 2020 with a total cost of around 30 billion yen ($270 million).
