• US President Donald Trump has said he is imposing hard-hitting new sanctions on Iran, including on the office of the country's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.


• Mr. Trump said the additional sanctions were in response to the shooting down of a US drone and "many other things".


• Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's highest authority, was singled out because he was "ultimately responsible for the hostile conduct of the regime".

• The chairman of the U.S House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC), Eliot Engel, wrote to U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Monday, saying that there was a growing view that the Trump administration was coercing India on various fronts rather than negotiating with it

• There is “absolutely a possibility” that Pakistan could be on its blacklist after the international financial watchdog’s next meeting in October in Paris, the outgoing president of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Marshall Billingslea, said on Friday.

• The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear the Enforcement Directorate’s petition against the permission granted to Rajeev Saxena, an approver in a money laundering case related to the AgustaWestland helicopter scam, to travel abroad on medical grounds.


• The agency challenged the Delhi High Court’s June 10 order allowing Saxena to go abroad for treatment of blood cancer and other ailments from June 25 to July 24.

• Terrorism, Afghanistan, the Indo-Pacific, Iran, trade issues, and growing bilateral defence ties will be the focus of discussions between the Indian government and visiting US secretary of state Mike Pompeo on Wednesday, with India in favour of de-escalation of the Persian Gulf crisis through dialogue, according to officials aware of the developments who asked not to be named.


• Secretary Pompeo is scheduled to have a pre-lunch meeting with external affairs minister S Jaishankar, followed by a lunch hosted by the latter. He will then call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi before leaving for Osaka the next day for the G20 Summit.

• The Supreme Court on Monday expressed “grave concern” over deaths caused by the outbreak of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar and sought responses from the Central and state governments on a petition that alleged that negligence and inaction claimed the lives of at least 152 children in Muzaffarpur and other areas.


• The apex court asked the Centre and the state government to respond within seven days with details of medical facilities, sanitation, nutrition and hygiene conditions in Bihar.

• The Reserve Bank of India, on Monday, launched a ‘Complaint Management System (CMS)’, which will enable members of the public to lodge their complaints on its website against any of the regulated entities with public interface such as commercial banks, urban co-operative banks, and non-banking financial companies, among others. The system will be accessible on desktop as well as on mobile devices.

• The fact is there is a slowdown of some nature. There are stresses everywhere. But what I think gets appreciated in situations like this is where the governance is stronger.

• The electoral commission of Mauritania, a country in Northwest Africa, announced that the country’s ruling party candidate and a former general and defense minister, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani (aged 62) of Union for the Republic (UPR) party won the presidential election with 52% votes. He will succeed Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.


• Anti-slavery activist Biram Dah Abeid (Independent) stood second with 18.58% votes and Sidi Mohamed Ould Boubacar (Independent), who is backed by the country’s biggest Islamist party, stood third with 17.87% votes.
