• A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand on Saturday, the country's seismic monitoring service GeoNet said.

• A US court ordered the government of Iran to pay nearly $180 million in damages to an Iranian-American journalist who was jailed by Tehran on espionage charges in 2014.


• A US District Court judge ordered the damages be paid to Jason Rezaian and his family in compensation for pain and suffering as well as an economic loss for the 18-month detention when he was physically abused, deprived of sleep and medical care and threatened with execution.

• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the centre will ensure every family in India has a house by 2022.


• "By 2022, there will be no family without a roof above its head. By 2024, our aim is to provide tap water to every home in the country," Mr. Singh said at a BJP event in Lucknow.

• Amid criticism over high unemployment rate, a survey by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Saturday showed that urban unemployment rate dropped to the lowest level in four quarters at 9.3 per cent during January-March 2019.


• The quarterly bulletin of the Periodic Labour Force Survey by the NSO, released, does not contain comparable figures for January-March 2018.


• The NSO, which is a wing of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, stated in the bulletin that the urban unemployment rate (UR) was 9.9 percent in April-June 2018, 9.7 per cent in July-September 2018 and 9.9 per cent in October-December 2018.

• Platinium Jubilee celebrations, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that Rs 100 crore assistance has been sanctioned for the infrastructure development of Utkal University here.


• “The government of Odisha has sanctioned Rs 100 crore to Utkal University for opening six Centres of Excellence.


• The university has already received Rs 40 crore in the current academic year. Besides, funds have also been provided for the infrastructure development of the university,” Patnaik said.

• Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology has increased its BTech and MTech seats by 14%. The increase will come in to effect from 2020-21 academic session, informed institute officials.

• To popularise cross-border transactions in Indian rupee, the Reserve Bank of India has enhanced the scope of 'Special Non-resident Rupee' (SNRR) by allowing persons residing outside India to open such accounts for purposes like external commercial borrowing and trade credit in Indian rupee.


• The RBI, in a notification on Friday, said: "With a view to promote the usage of INR products by persons resident outside India, it has been decided, in consultation with the Government of India, to expand the scope of SNRR Account by permitting person resident outside India to open such account for external commercial borrowings in INR; trade credits in INR..."

• Banshilal Mahto was 79. He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters.
