• Hong Kong police fired tear gas to disperse pro-democracy protesters on Saturday after pro-China groups pulled down some of the "Lennon Walls" of anti-government messages posted in the Chinese-ruled city in more than three months of unrest.


• The first canisters were fired when protesters hurled petrol bombs towards an approaching police line in the new town of Tuen Mun, in the west of the New Territories, and again after night fell in nearby Yuen Long.

• The UN has welcomed a proposal from Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels to end all attacks on Saudi Arabia as part of a peace initiative.


• A statement said the proposal could send "a powerful message of the will to end the war".


• The offer comes a week after drone and missile strikes hit Saudi Arabian oil facilities.


• Houthi rebels have claimed to have carried out the attack, but the US and Saudi Arabia have blamed Iran.

• Early on September 14, two critical Saudi Arabian oil installations near the Gulf coast came under attack.
The drones and missiles that attacked the Abqaiq processing facility and the Khurais oilfield, both owned by Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), set off fires which lasted for hours and caused enormous damage, leading to a spike in international crude prices.

• The attack has also escalated geopolitical tensions in West Asia with the U.S. pointing fingers at Iran and Tehran in turn denying any role in the attacks and warning against any action against it.

• China and former Taiwan ally the Solomon Islands established diplomatic ties on Saturday in a sign of Beijing’s growing influence in the Pacific.


• In a setback for self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as a province, Beijing this month won over two previous Taiwanese allies in the Pacific — the Solomon Islands and Kiribati.


• The Chinese government’s top diplomat, State Councillor Wang Yi, told reporters in Beijing after signing diplomatic ties with the Solomon Islands that it was “neither reasonable nor sustainable” for them not to have formal ties.

• The United States imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran, some aimed at its central bank and sovereign wealth fund, following attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.


• Iran will pursue any aggressor, even it carries out a limited attack, and seek to destroy it, the head of the elite Revolutionary Guards said, after attacks on Saudi oil sites which Riyadh and U.S officials blamed on Tehran.

• Caught in a swirl of controversy over his comments on “population control” Congress leader Jitin Prasada clarified that his prescription was not prompted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech and that it isn’t designed against any one community.


• The debate was triggered by Mr. Prasada’s tweet on Wednesday, where he recalled the Congress resolution of 1998 at the Panchmarhi shivir (camp) to work towards the goal of a two-child norm.

• Northern Army commander Lt Gen Ranbir Singh has reached out to the locals in south Kashmir, considered to be the hotbed of terrorism, with a message that the army and the government are working towards restoring peace in the region.


• During interaction with some community leaders, the army commander sought suggestions from the people on how the lives of young people in the valley can be made better.

• Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav will now have to get his Mercedes SUV, allotted to him by the state government, replaced as the cost of repair is too high, officials said.


• According to the officials of the Estate Department and Security Department, the Mercedes SUV, which was allotted to Yadav has developed some technical snag the repairing cost of which is around Rs. 26 lakh.


• A senior official said there has been a lot of exchange of letters between the estate department and the security department over the cost of repair of the SUV.

• IIT-Gandhinagar has signed MoUs with four universities in the US state of New Jersey for academic and research collaboration.


• The four universities that are partners in the memorandums of understanding with IIT-Gandhinagar are New Jersey Institute of Technology, New Jersey City University, Rutgers University, and Rowan University.

• The union home ministry announced a new honour on the Padma awards pattern named the Sardar Patel National Unity Award to individuals and persons for promoting national unity and integrity.
