• World Tuna Day is established by the United Nations (UN) on [latex]2^{nd}[/latex] May 2019 to increase awareness about the importance of tuna fish and to promote more sustainable fishing practices. First time it was observed in 2017.


• According to UN, several countries in the world depend upon tuna for both food security and nutrition. More than 80 countries have tuna fisheries and their capacity is also growing constantly.

• Britain’s embattled Prime Minister Theresa May sacked defence secretary Gavin Williamson following an investigation into the leak of sensitive issues related to Chinese telecom major Huawei and its potential role in building the UK’s 5G network.


• May wrote to Williamson in a strongly-worded letter her conclusion following the investigation that provided “compelling evidence suggesting your responsibility for the unauthorised disclosure” during last week’s meeting of the National Security Council.

• Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar was designated a global terrorist by the UN after China withdrew its long-standing block to the move, marking a major diplomatic and political victory in the Indian government’s efforts to counter cross-border terrorism.


• Azhar was listed by the UN’s 1267 Sanctions Committee for his association with al-Qaeda and his role in financing, planning and facilitating terrorist acts by the JeM, shortly after officials announced in Islamabad that Pakistan would no longer object to his designation – a sign to iron brother China to lift the “technical hold” it had placed on four attempts to sanction Azhar.

• Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo by phone that further "aggressive steps" in Venezuela would be fraught with the gravest consequences.


• Sergei Lavrov called the United States' "interference" in Venezuela's internal affairs as a breach of international law, adding that dialogue between all political forces is required in the Latin American country.

• American and Taliban officials resumed talks in Qatar aimed at ending a 17-year war in Afghanistan, while the Afghan government hosted a rare assembly in Kabul to ensure its interests are upheld in any peace deal.


• The Taliban issued a statement saying the US special envoy for peace in Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, had met the Taliban's political chief Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, who is heading the Islamist militants' delegation.

• Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó has called for an escalating series of strikes to force President Nicolás Maduro to relinquish power.


• Mr Guaidó urged public employees to act on today, saying the stoppages would lead to a general strike.

• Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared the Class 12th results today for all regions. Overall pass percentage this year is 83.4%.


• Hansika Shukla and Karishma Arora of UP have scored 499 out of 500 and emerged as CBSE topper.


• A total of 3114831 candidates were registered out of which 12, 87, 359 had appeared for CBSE class 12th exam.

• The Supreme Court gave the Centre four days instead of four weeks to file its reply to the review petitions filed in the Rafale case and allowed Congress president Rahul Gandhi to file a “good affidavit” in a related contempt case after the judges said they weren’t convinced by his expression of regret on the matter.


• Attorney general KK Venugopal sought four weeks’ time to file the Centre’s reply. The bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, directed the government to file its reply by [latex]4^{th}[/latex] May and posted the matter for hearing on [latex]6^{th}[/latex] May .


• The bench, also comprising justice Sanjay Kaul and justice KM Joseph, sought the Centre’s reply on a separate plea by the petitioner to initiate perjury action against officials who allegedly misguided the apex court in the Rafale case.

• Authorities announced an end to the restrictions on civilian traffic along the 100 km stretch between Uri and Srinagar along the lifeline highway that connects Kashmir to the outside world.


• The restrictions will be completely lifted from today. “There would be no prohibition on the civilian traffic in this stretch on Sunday or Wednesday.”


• Civilian traffic along the 301-km Uri - Udhampur highway was banned from 4 am to 5 pm every Sunday and Wednesday until [latex]31^{st}[/latex] May to allow exclusive movement of security forces in view of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections that began on [latex]11^{th}[/latex] April.


• The ban followed the car bomb attack along the highway that left 40 paramilitary troopers dead in Pulwama district on [latex]14^{th}[/latex] February.

• The Union Environment Ministry has constituted a committee to implement the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), which aims to reduce particulate matter (PM) pollution by 20%-30% in at least 102 cities by 2024.


• The committee will be chaired by the Secretary, Union Environment Ministry. It would be headquartered in New Delhi.

• The Delhi High Court directed the Election Commission (EC) to file an affidavit indicating the powers it has to ensure implementation of its guidelines regarding disclosure of expenditure by political parties.


• A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice A J Bhambhani gave a final opportunity to the poll panel to submit the document and said it if fails to do so then the court will proceed to pass orders.


• The high court also noted that the matter has been pending for the last five years and the direction to EC in February to file the affidavit has not been complied with till date.

• The Delhi High Court has issued notice to Jet Airways on a plea seeking direction to the Civil Aviation Ministry and DGCA to ensure refunds or provide alternative travel mode for passengers who have booked tickets with the airlines.


• The Jet Airways had last month announced a temporary suspension of its operations after it failed to receive emergency funds from lenders.


• A bench, headed by Chief Justice Rajendra Menon, sought a response from Jet Airways and also asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to file an affidavit on the issue.

• Facilities management provider UDS has acquired a majority stake in Matrix Business Services, which operates in the business assurance and background verification segment.


• This acquisition includes buying out the entire 19.77% stake of Kotak Mahindra Investments and 2.67% of Mahindra & Mahindra Contech and the balance 52.56% from other shareholders, mainly from all non-executive shareholders.

• India’s largest bank State Bank of India has moved to a new interest rate regime on large savings account deposits as well as short-term loans.


• In March, SBI had announced that it will link its interest rate on savings account with balance above Rs. 1 lakh and short-term loans like overdraft and cash credit facility to Reserve Bank of India’s repo rate, effective [latex]1^{st}[/latex] May 2019.


• The interest rates on large SBI savings account deposits and interest rate on some short-term loans will automatically change as and when RBI changes its repo rate. This will help in better transmission of RBI’s policy rates into the banking system.

• State-owned NBCC said it has received government approval for its revised offer to acquire cash-strapped Jaypee Infratech.


• This comes within a week after its bid was rejected by lenders as it was subject to approval of government authorities. NBCC has offered ₹5,000 crore worth land and 100% equity of Yamuna Expressway, the only cash-generating asset with Jaypee Infratech.

• Boxing Federation of India will be launching the Indian Boxing League (IBL) this year in the month of July or August. The announcement was made by BFI president Ajay Singh during an event in New Delhi.


• Indian boxers’ stupendous Asian Championship medal haul has prompted the national federation to think of some fresh ways to aid their Olympic preparations.

• Senior IAS officer Dilip Kumar was appointed as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the office of Lokpal.


• It is perhaps the first official appointment of a bureaucrat in Lokpal.


• Kumar, a 1995-batch IAS officer of Punjab cadre, is at present joint secretary, National Human Rights Commission.


• He has been appointed for a period of six months on additional charge basis or till a new incumbent joins the post, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry said.


• President Ram Nath Kovind had on March 23 administered the oath of office to Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose as the chairperson of Lokpal.


• Justice Ghose retired from Supreme Court in May 2017. He then served as member of the NHRC before taking over as the Lokpal chief.

• China successfully sent two Tianhui II-01 satellites into orbit from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China’s Shanxi Province.


• The satellites were launched by a Long March 4B carrier rocket, which was the 303rd mission of the Long March series carrier rockets.


• The satellites will be used for scientific experiments, land resource survey, geographic survey and mapping.

• Former chief justice of the Kerala and Madras High Courts B Subhashan Reddy died yesterday in Hyderabad following a brief illness.


• The 76-year-old was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Gachibowli. Reddy, who served as the Lokayukta of the combined Andhra Pradesh state, has also been the first chairman of Andhra Pradesh state Human Rights Commission and Lokayukta.


• He was born at Bagh Amberpet in Hyderabad Urban Taluk on 2-03-1943, and educated at Sultan Bazar and Chadarghat High Schools, Hyderabad, New Science College and Osmania University College of Science, University College of Law, Osmania University.
