• US President Donald Trump said he plans to impose a 10 per cent tariff on $300 billion of Chinese imports from September 1 and could raise tariffs further if China's President Xi Jinping fails to move more quickly to strike a trade deal.


• The announcement extends Trump's trade tariffs to nearly all China's imports into the United States and marks an abrupt end to a temporary truce in a trade war that has disrupted global supply chains and roiled financial markets.

• Several small explosions were heard in Bangkok in at least three locations and police said that two street cleaners had been hurt by what appeared to be a homemade bomb.


• There were no other immediate reports of injuries.


• Thai police said they were investigating the cause of the explosions. Some explosions were heard at a government office and others near at least two other sites near central Bangkok.

• The Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) Amendment Bill, 2019, which enables the government to designate individuals as terrorists, was tabled in the Rajya Sabha.


• Several Opposition parties including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and MDMK opposed the bill.


• Expressing concerns about its draconian provisions, the opposition MPs said the law would be used against anyone who opposed the government.

• The Lok Sabha unanimously passed the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which seeks death penalty for aggravated sexual assault on children.


• Responding to the debate on the Bill, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani said that the bill aimed to make offenses against children gender-neutral.


• “This Bill is not related to vote-bank politics but to save the future of India. The government’s priority is to ensure that justice is delivered to every child in the country,” said the minister.

• Opposition amendment for more State representatives included in Bill that will replace MCI.


• The Rajya Sabha cleared the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill with a crucial amendment brought in by the government to increase representation of States in the new body, as demanded by the Opposition.


• The Bill was passed by a voice vote. The Lok Sabha had earlier cleared the proposed law on July 29. The NMC will replace the Medical Council of India (MCI).

• The Staff Selection Commission issued a notification giving the revised dates for issue of notices of examinations for the above mentioned examinations.


• Earlier on July 27, SSC had released a notice in employment newspaper informing that detailed official notification for the post of Junior Engineer examination will be released on August 1.

• Amendments will help IBC to be vibrant and more effective, says Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Parliament passed the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (amendment) Bill 2019, which brought in eight amendments as part of efforts to ensure that the code remains vibrant and not lend itself to any interpretative ambiguities.


• The Bill — which was earlier this week passed by the Rajya Sabha — was on Thursday passed by the Lok Sabha after a nearly three-hour-long discussion on the amendments.

• Bank of India (BoI), said the Reserve Bank of India has asked it to pay a penalty of ₹1.5 crore on account of ‘non-compliance with RBI’s direction on frauds’ in Rotomac Group companies.


• In a stock exchange notice, BoI said the penalty is required to be paid within 14 days of receipt of RBI’s order, which was received via email dated August 1.

• Ravish Kumar has been named for the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for "harnessing journalism to give voice to the voiceless" and his "unfaltering commitment to a professional, ethical journalism of the highest standards".

• Raamdeo Agrawal, the Co-Founder of Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL), has been appointed as the non-executive Chairman of the firm.


• Agrawal will take up the non-executive role from October 14 this year, after his current term as the company's Joint Managing Director expires. Agrawal, who is a Chartered Accountant, co-founded the financial services firm in 1987 alongside CMD Motilal Oswal.

• The US senate has confirmed President Trump's nominee Kelly Knight Craft as the next ambassador to the United Nations.


• Ms. Knight Craft, 57, a major Republican fundraiser, is currently US ambassador to Canada.
