• The leftist party offers a third alternative to Sri Lankan voters


• Sri Lanka’s leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) or the People’s Liberation Front on Sunday said it would field party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as presidential candidate, effectively offering a third option to Sri Lankan voters in the polls scheduled later this year.


• The announcement comes a week after the Rajapaksa camp named former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa its candidate contesting from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP or People’s Front). Amid much tension among different factions within, the incumbent United National Party (UNP)-led alliance is yet to name its candidate.

• A group of 16 African countries has called on the US and EU to "immediately lift" economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.


• The policy was hurting the region, said Tanzania President John Magufuli, who is also the chairman of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc).

• Amid speculation that former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda could part ways with the Congress over the State leadership issue at a rally in Rohtak on Sunday, he announced the formation of a 25-member committee to decide on the issue ahead of the Assembly Election in Haryana due later this year.

• Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday blamed the “politics of appeasement” for the “evil practice” of triple talaq till this year.

• An expedition by the Dogra Scouts has recovered parts of an Indian Air Force AN-12 transport aircraft that crashed in the icy mountains of Himachal Pradesh 51 years ago, killing all 102 people on board, the Army said on Sunday.


• The Western Command launched an operation on July 26 to recover the mortal remains of over 90 missing soldiers, who were on board the AN-12 BL-534 aircraft which went missing over the Rohtang Pass in Kullu district on February 7, 1968.

• Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) will activate the link to view exam city and date intimation letter for CBT 2nd stage for junior engineers (JE) recruitment today.


• The link is expected to be activated by 11 pm in the evening today. Candidates will be able to check the intimation letters on their official website of their regional RRBs.
