• An undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck south of Indonesia's Bali on Tuesday, the European earthquake monitoring agency EMSC said, causing some residents and visitors on the tourist island to briefly rush out of buildings.

• Mumbai terror attack mastermind and JuD chief Hafiz Saeed and his three aides were granted pre-arrest bail on Monday by an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan in a case pertaining to the banned outfit’s illegal use of land for its seminary.

• The Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has signed a bill into law penalising a range of acts of sexual harassment including catcalling, wolf-whistling and persistent telling of sexual jokes, which pro-women’s groups have accused him of committing.


• Philippine officials released on Monday a copy of Republic Act 11313, known as the “Safe Spaces Act,” which Duterte signed in April. The reason for the delay in its public release was not immediately clear.

• The Supreme Court on Monday admitted a writ petition seeking to decriminalise abortion and allowing women the right to exercise their reproductive choice.


• “The right to exercise reproductive choice is the right to choose whether to conceive and carry pregnancy to its full term or to terminate is it at the core of one’s privacy, dignity, personal autonomy, bodily integrity, self determination and right to health recognised by Article 21 of the Constitution,” the petition filed by Swati Agarwal, Garima Sekseria and Prachi Vats said.

• HTN’s Tiranga TV news channel has significantly curtailed operations and is set to lay off most of its 200 employees with only a month’s notice and salary, according to staff at the 6-month-old channel, who spoke on condition of anonymity.


• All the live programming has been cancelled for 48 hours and staff, including journalists, are likely to be sacked soon, said the employees. A first round of sackings took place in mid-June when more than two dozen employees were laid off by the TV news company. The channel had gone on air on January 26.

• Amendments to the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act and the Surrogacy Regulation Bill were re-introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in the Lok Sabha on Monday. These bills had lapsed since they had not been passed by the Rajya Sabha.


• The proposed amendments to the MV Act seeks to provide a compensation of ₹5 lakh for death and ₹2.5 lakh for grievous injury in a motor vehicle accident case. Among other provisions, the bill seeks to increase penalties for violations, facilitate grant of online learning licence, simplified provisions for insurance to provide expeditious help to accident victims and their families, and protection of good samaritans.

• The penalty is for non-compliance with the directions issued by the RBI on Income Recognition and Asset Classification (IRAC) norms, code of conduct for opening and operating current accounts and reporting of data on Central Repository of Information on Large Credits (CRILC) and fraud risk management and classification and reporting of frauds, the central bank said in a statement.


• “This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. This action is based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the bank with its customers,” the RBI said.

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said it has imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on Union Bank of India for non-compliance with the directions on cybersecurity framework.


• “This action (imposition of penalty) is based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the bank with its customers,” it added.

• DU admissions 2019: A total of 1,54,075 (1.54 lakh) students have registered for the postgraduate registrations at DU of which 131129 (1.31 lakh) have paid the application fee.


• The University of Delhi (DU) was scheduled to release the first merit list for admission to postgraduate courses at the varsity today – July 16 (Tuesday), however, in the latest notice it said that the schedule for postgraduate admissions has been postponed and a revised schedule will be released on July 18 (Thursday) at du.ac.in.

• Prominent American computer scientist, credited with inventing the computer password, Fernando J. Corbato passed away at Newburyport in Massachusetts,U.S as a result of complications caused by diabetes. He was 93.


• He was a professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) and he credited for devising the concept of password-protected user accounts to secure access to files on a large computer system.
