• The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) appealed for information on the whereabouts of three employees abducted in Syria more than five years ago and last known to have been held by Islamic State.


• Breaking its silence on the case, the independent aid agency identified the three as Louisa Akavi, a nurse from New Zealand, and Syrian drivers Alaa Rajab and Nabil Bakdounes.

• Weekend tornadoes killed at least five people, including three children, in the US South, authorities, as a massive storm system with damaging wind and hail moved across the country and began drenching East Coast states.


• A tornado touched down and spun toward Enigma, Georgia, after 17 twisters were reported and earlier on Sunday across the South from Texas to Alabama.

• Egypt`s parliament will vote on constitutional amendments including an extension to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi`s current four-year-term.


• Proposed constitutional amendments had previously suggested that Sisi would be allowed to seek two new six-year terms after his current one expires in 2022.


• But according to a recent draft seen, those latest amendments could allow Sisi to stay in power until 2030 by extending his current term by two more years and allowing him to run once again in 2024.

• Sudan`s main protest group demanded the immediate handover of power to a civilian transitional government, saying it would keep up the street demonstrations which ousted former President Omar al-Bashir last week to achieve its aims.


• The Sudanese Professionals` Association (SPA) called for the establishment of a transitional council which would be protected by the armed forces, adding it would exert "all forms of peaceful pressure to achieve the objectives of the revolution".

• The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) ban on the release of the film Narendra Modi biopic.


• The plea was filed by the producers of the biopic after the poll panel had passed an order on April 10 banning the screening of the Narendra Modi biopic during the ongoing Lok Sabha poll, citing the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).


• The apex court on Friday agreed to hear the matter after the producers raised issues related to fundamental rights of freedom of speech and expression in their petition.

• The Pope’s unique gesture was an attempt to encourage peace in a country which has seen more than 400,000 people killed in a civil war since independence in 2011.

• Today India is celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of Marshal of Indian Air Force (IAF) Arjan Singh. He is remembered for his distinguished service in commanding the IAF during the 1965 Indo-Pak war.


• He was promoted to the rank of Air Chief Marshal on January 15, 1966, and the first Air Chief Marshal of the Indian Air Force.

• Three Maoists and a CRPF jawan were killed in an encounter in Jharkhand's Giridih district.


• They said the encounter between the two sides took place around today 6 am in the forests of Belbha Ghat area of the district when troops of the 7th battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were undertaking operations.


• Three bodies of Maoists along with an AK-47 Rifle, three bullet magazines and four pipe bombs have been recovered from the encounter site till now.

• Jet Airways pilots body, the National Aviator’s Guild (NAG), appealed the State Bank of India (SBI) to release ₹1,500 crore, which was proposed to be infused in the ailing carrier as part of a debt-restructuring plan last month.


• The airline is operating just 6-7 planes, with almost its entire fleet being grounded due to non-payment of rentals to lessors amid severe paucity of cash.

• While digital payments overall have been growing strongly, people are changing the way they transact, choosing bank-to-bank methods such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) over other instruments such as e-wallets.


• Data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and some industry players from April 2018 to March 2019 shows that not only is the UPI platform outperforming e-wallets in terms of the value of transactions done, but it is also eating away at e-wallets’ market share in specific areas such as person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions.

• Union Public Service Commission has released marks for the Civil Services Examination 2018, where it stated topper Kanishak Kataria, an IIT-Bombay graduate from Jaipur, scored 1121 marks.


• Second rank holder Akshat Jain scored 1080 marks and third rank holder Junaid Ahmad got 1077 marks. Fourth rank holder Shreyans Kumat scored 1071 marks followed by Srushti Jayant Deshmukh with 1068 marks.

• Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted the oath of office from the new 24-member cabinet headed by Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtayeh.


• Mohammed Ishtayeh is a veteran peace negotiator and harsh critic of Gaza’s Hamas rulers.


• This move will deepen the rift between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, the Islamic militant group that governs the Gaza Strip.


• The new 24 member cabinet replaces a technocratic government, which was formed by Rami Hamdallah in 2014.


• US recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in 2018, triggering the Palestinian Authority to serve its ties with the US.

• Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, a native of the temple City, became the first Indian to be appointed Chair of International Hockey Federation (FIH) Health and Safety Committee by the world governing body, Hockey India (HI). He will serve a two-year cycle lasting until 2020.


• Dr.Nayak first Indian to have been nominated by FIH as the Medical Officer for a World Cup.

• He had worked as the Medical Officer for the 2018 Men’s World Cup and chief team physician of Indian Contingent in Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.


• In 1995, he was appointed in the Army Medical Corps of Indian Army and worked the Army Sports Institute, Pune.


• In 2009, he joined the Indian hockey team and has co-occurred with the team in the events such as Men’s Hockey World Cup (all in 2010),Sultan Azlan Shah Cup (2009, 2010), Asian Games, CWG, and Asian Champions Trophy (2012).

• It has two fuselages and six Boeing 747 engines and is designed to carry into space, and drop a rocket that would in turn ignite to deploy satellites.


• An engineering company named ‘Scaled Composites’ built this airplane and was financed by Paul Allen who was the co-founder of Microsoft.


• The wingspan of this airplane is 117 meters which is about 1.5 times that of an Airbus A380.


• The airplane can hit a top speed of 304 kilometers per hour (189 mph) and reached an altitude of 17,000 feet or 5,182 meters.
