• Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Inc said that sales for its annual Singles' Day shopping blitz hit 84 billion yuan ($12 billion) within the first hour, up 22% from last year's early haul of 69 billion yuan.

• The United States urged Iraqi authorities to hold early polls and carry out electoral reforms, and called for an end to the violence against protesters that has left hundreds dead.


• Washington wants "the Iraqi government to halt the violence against protesters and fulfill President (Barham) Saleh's promise to pass electoral reform and hold early elections," the White House said in a statement.

• The incident of placing of idols inside the Babri Mosque in 1949, which was followed by attachment of the disputed land by a magisterial court, led to the filing of the first of five suits in connection with the controversial site, the Supreme Court has said in its historic verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute.


• The apex court said that the run-up to the incident saw the posting of a police picket at the site on November 12, 1949, due to communal tensions.

• After the BJP said it did not have the numbers to stake claim of the government, the state Governor has invited the Shiv Sena, which is the second largest party, to form the government in the state.

• The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) announced its first list of three candidates for the assembly polls in the state.


• Party president Shibu Soren approved the names of Bhushan Tirkey (Gumla-ST), Chamra Linda (Bishunpur-ST) and Mithelesh Kumar Thakur (Garhwa), a JMM release said.


• The JMM, the Congress and Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) had recently announced a pre-poll alliance in the state. Former chief minister and JMM working president Hemant Soren will be the alliance's chief ministerial face.

• The draft code on social security, which subsumes eight existing laws covering provident fund, maternity benefits and pension, is being further worked upon after a recent round of public consultations, officials of the Labour and Employment Ministry have said.


• A draft of the social security code, one of the four codes that are part of the Centre’s labor reforms agenda, was published on September 17 for public comments and suggestions till October 25.

• The lawyers' strike would continue as a meeting, held on the orders of the Delhi High Court after the lawyers-cops clash, between the members of all district courts associations, representatives of Delhi police and Lt Governor Anil Baijal failed to bring out any resolution, the coordination committee general secretary said.


• "Despite our cooperation, no concrete step has been taken to arrest the police persons who fired at advocates, so there would be complete, complete and complete abstinence from work with all peaceful modes in all Delhi district courts. • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has inaugurated the third convocation of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).


• "My congratulations to all the students who are receiving their degrees and compliments to faculty members of JNU for providing quality education," said the Vice President addressing the students and faculty.

• West Bengal Police Recruitment Board (WBPRB) will release the admit cards for the Preliminary Written Test for recruitment to the post of Excise Constable (including Lady Excise Constables) in the subordinate Excise service under Finance Department of Government of West Bengal.


• The e-admit cards will be available on the Board's official website. Candidates who have applied for the recruitment will be able to download their admit cards using their application number and date of birth.
