• President Donald Trump announced Biegun's nomination to replace Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, who has been tapped to be ambassador to Russia.


• The nomination is drawing particular attention amid growing speculation that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will run for Senate next year in Kansas, meaning that Biegun could become the acting top US diplomat, at least briefly.

• Britain's government will not name a successor to Bank of England Governor Mark Carney before a national election due on December 12, a finance ministry official said.


• Earlier, a spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the process for the appointment remained on track to be made this autumn.


• The BoE's current governor, Mark Carney, is due to leave the central bank on Jan. 31, which is also the latest deadline for Britain to leave the European Union.

• The opposition Congress announced names of 8 candidates for 15 Karnataka by-elections, to be held on December 5 and results would be declared on December 9.


• "Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has approved names of 8 candidates for the ensuing by-elections in Karnataka," said Congress general secretary Mukul Wasnik in a statement in New Delhi.


• "The candidates for the remaining seven seats will be announced in due course," a party spokesman told IANS.

• German Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, their fifth meeting in a year. Nearly 20 agreements are expected to be signed between India and Germany during Ms Merkel's visit.

• Calling the $20 fee for Kartarpur Corridor visit as "too high", SAD president Sukhbir Badal requested Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan not to make the corridor a source of income for his country as it is meant for pilgrimage.


• Mr. Badal said it should be seen as a "goodwill gesture" between the two countries.

• Revoking its earlier decision to combine question papers and answer scripts in the plus two board examinations from 2020, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education has decided to revert to the old system of providing separate answer scripts to examinees.


• Council president Mohua Das in a notification issued on Thursday said, in the Higher Secondary Examinations for 2020, Part A section will have separate question paper and answer sheet and not a Question-cum-Answer booklet.

• National Board of Examinations (NBE) would conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical postgraduate seats and PG Diploma seats on January 5, 2020. Registration process for the exam has begun.


• NEET PG is the only single entrance exam for admission to various MD/ MS and PG Diploma courses, no other entrance exam is valid for admission to these courses.


• The exam is mandatory even for foreign nationals seeking admission in medical courses in India.

• 19.18 lakh out of 38.58 lakh registered candidates had appeared for the first stage exam for Multi Tasking Staff recruitment, a General Central Service Group 'C' Non-Gazetted, Non-Ministerial post.


• The exam was conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) in 39 shifts from August 2 to August 22. The SSC MTS result will be declared on November 5; 75 days after the exam was held.

• The Delhi High Court asked the Centre, the RBI and others to file response plea seeking directions for redressal of certain aspects, including insuring depositors' money blocked in the scam-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank and to frame guidelines to safeguard deposited money.


• A Division Bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice C. Hari Shankar issued a notice to the Centre and RBI listing the matter for further hearing on January 22.

• Revenue from Goods and Services Tax fell 5.3 per cent year-on-year to Rs. 95,380 crore in October. However, on a monthly basis the revenue from GST rose 3.76 per cent from Rs. 91,916 crore in September, official data released by Ministry of Finance showed.


• Central GST (CGST) collections stood at Rs. 17,582 crore, State GST (SGST) collections came in at Rs. 23,674 crore and Integrated GST (IGST) came in at Rs. 46,517 crore (including Rs. 21,446 crore collected on imports), according to press release issued by the Finance Ministry.

• A maiden half century from James Vince powered England to a convincing seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening Twenty20 international in Christchurch.


• Vince top-scored for the tourists with 59 as England chased down New Zealand's 154-run target in 18.3 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. • Six-time world champion M C Mary Kom has been included in a 10-strong athlete ambassadors group to represent boxers in the build-up to next year's Tokyo Olympic Games by the IOC's Task Force for the sport.

• In a tweet, the Embassy welcomed Mr Kapoor and announced that he had commenced his first day in office by offering floral tributes to a Mahatma Gandhi bust which was unveiled as part of his 150th birth anniversary, Gulf News reported.
