• The 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) slammed the US decision to transfer its embassy to Jerusalem and recognize the disputed city as Israel's capital.


• The Saudi-hosted summit condemned the "transfer of embassies of the United States and Guatemala to Jerusalem" and urged all members to "boycott" countries that have opened diplomatic missions in the city, a statement said.

• The first time after an over-50% cut in the number of Indian students coming to the UK since visa curbs were introduced in 2012, immigration officials have noted a 40 per cent rise in their number in the year ending March 2019, new figures show.


• The perception that the United Kingdom is less welcoming to international students, particularly due to the closure of the post-study work visa in 2012, prompted a progressive year-wise decline of Indian students from the high of 39,090 in 2010-2011 to 16,550 in 2016-17.

• The government released a controversial jobs report that seemed to suggest unemployment in India was at a four-decade high, but, even as it retained the numbers in the report, which had been leaked, it said the underlying survey was based on an entirely new methodology, making any comparison with previous surveys unfair.


• The country’s unemployment rate was 6.1%, data from the country’s first periodic labour force survey (PLFS) for July 2017-June 2018 showed.


• Given the government’s admission on methodology, this is a number that has to be seen in isolation — at least until the next survey based on a comparable methodology is released.

• The Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government unveiled pensions for small traders and farmers, and expanded PM Kisan, the minimum assured income scheme announced in its first term, to include all eligible farmers — two big-ticket announcements just a day after being sworn in for its second term.


• The first meeting of the new Cabinet, chaired by Modi, decided to launch two flagship pension schemes, supported entirely by the Centre, to provide a minimum fixed pension of ₹3,000 a month for small and marginal farmers and small traders when they reach 60 years.

• The CII-IBA Financial Conditions Index for Q1 (April-June) FY20 has recorded yet another rise to the above-50-mark for the third time in a row, owing to expectation of improvement in the overall condition of the economy.


• The Financial Conditions Index for Q1 FY20 has come in at a robust 68.1, against 62.9 in the preceding quarter.


• The index is up on account of most of the components — External Financial Linkages, Funding Liquidity Index and Cost of Funds Index — barring the Economic Activity Index.

• With economic growth likely to slow down in the March-quarter 2019, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may cut repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) in the upcoming monetary policy review, analysts say.


• The growth data for the fourth quarter 2018-19 is to be released.


• According to a DBS Group Research report, the economic growth is likely to moderate to 6.1 per cent, slowest in over seven quarters, from 6.6 per cent last year same period.
