Choose the Correct – Incorrect Sentence

Sentence correction is of two types. They are:
    1. When same sentences of different forms are given.
    2. When different sentences are given.

The most common question is sentence correction.

Following examples are the sentences with error and correction of the error words are as follows (here the underlined words are errors).

  • You can get all the information that you want in this book. Correct sentence: You can get all the information you want in this book.

  • He has not played cricket nor hockey. Correct sentence: He has neither played cricket nor hockey.

Type 1: When same sentences of different forms are given
    Example: A sentence of different forms are given below. Select the one which conveys the meaning of the sentence correctly. (Bank P.O. 1996)
      1. As the train which is my usual was missing I had to travel on the next.
      2. Having missed the train which I usually catch and had to travel on the next.
      3. The train which I usually catch being missed I had to travel on the next.
      4. I missed the train which I usually catch and had to travel by the next.
      5. I missed not only the train which I usually catch but had to travel on the next.

    Correct sentence: - Fourth sentence is grammatically correct and it also conveys the exact meaning.

Type 2: When different sentences are given
    Example: Among the following given alternative sentences labelled 1, 2, 3 and 4; one sentence is grammatically wrong. Select that alternative. (Hotel Management, 1995)
      1. He carried little Meenu and I on his shoulders.
      2. All that he said had no effect on me.
      3. Those who did this thing should be punished.
      4. It was I had gave away the prizes.

    Correct sentence: Wrong alternative is first. The correct sentence is "He carried little Meenu and me on his shoulders."

    A. It is pleasure to see an alligator basking in the sunshine on a river bank as long as 90 feet. B. It is a pleasure to see an alligator as long as 90 feet basking in th sunshine on a river bank. C. It is a pleasure to see an alligator basking in the sunshine as long as 90 feet on a river bank. D. It is a pleasure to see an alligator basking as long as 90 feet in the sunshine on a river bank.
Answer: Clearly option B is grammatically correct and it also conveys the exact meaning. Hence, option B is the answer.
2. Select the sentence which is grammatically wrong among the given sentences. (Hotel Management, 1995)
    A. Our followers are but a handiful. B. Neither he nor I was there. C. Many a glorious deeds were done. D. Everyone of the boys loves to ride.
Answer: Corrected Sentence - "Many a glorious deed was done." Hence, Option C is wrong sentence.
3. Select the one which conveys the meaning of the sentence correctly. (Bank P.O.)
    A. Our school had won the match if only we have concentrated. B. Our school would have won the match if we would have concentrated. C. Our school would win the match only if we had concentrated. D. Our school had won the match if only we would have concentrated. E. Our school would have won the match if only we had concentrated.
Answer: Clearly option E is grammatically correct and it also conveys the exact meaning. Hence, option E is the answer.
4. Select the sentence which is grammatically wrong among the given sentences. (Hotel Management, 1995)
    A. He has no desire for frame. B. I intend going to Calcutta. C. He is too miserly to part with his money. D. He has invited me for dinner.
Answer: Corrected Sentence "He has invited me to dinner." Hence, option D is the answer.
5. Select the one which conveys the meaning of the sentence correctly. (U.D.C. 1994)
    A. There will be a meeting in the long room at 4 o'clock of all the boys who play cricket and football. B. There will be a meeting of all boys who play cricket and football in the long room at 4 o'clock. C. There will be in the long room at 4 o'clock a meeting of all the boys who play cricket and football. D. In the long room at 4 o'clock there will be a meeting of all the boys who play cricket and football.
Answer: Clearly option D is grammatically correct and it also conveys the exact meaning. Hence, option D is the answer.
6. Select the sentence which is grammatically correct among the given sentences.
    A. The proceeds of the charity show are for riot victims. B. He asked Robert and I to go. C. The weather of this place does not suit me. D. Either Albert or his friends has done it.
Answer: Option A is the correct sentence.
7. Select the one which conveys the meaning of the sentence correctly. (S.B.I.P.O. 1995)
    A. Since the dividend being declared than the notices were prepared for mailing. B. Scarcely had the dividend been declared than the notices were sent out. C. They had no sooner declared the dividend when they sent the notices to the stock holders. D. No sooner had the dividend been declared than the notices were prepared for mailing. E. The company had hardly declared the dividend till the notices were prepared for mailing.
Answer: Clearly option D is grammatically correct and it also conveys the exact meaning. Hence, option D is the answer.
8. Select the sentence which is grammatically wrong among the given sentences. (Hotel Management, 1995)
    A. She is one of the best mothers that have ever lived. B. None of these words are now current. C. This is one of the best films that has been produced this year. D. Sam, as well as Alex and Jack, likes milk.
Answer: Corrected Sentence "This is one of the best films that have been produced this year." Hence, option C is the answer.
9. Select the one which conveys the meaning of the sentence correctly. (Bank P.O. 1996)
    A. Since he lacked needed money, he never turned down anyone who needed help. B. He wasn't rich by any means, although he never turned down anyone who needed help. C. Being not rich by any means, he never turned away anyone who needed help. D. He wasn't rich by any means, but he never turned away anyone who needed help. E. Since he wasn't rich by any means, he never turned awy anyone who needed help.
Answer: Clearly option D is grammatically correct and it also conveys the exact meaning. Hence, option D is the answer.
10. Select the sentence which is grammatically correct among the given sentences. (Hotel Management, 1995)
    A. I found out that he was guilty. B. Much pains has been taken. C. The jury was divided in their opinions. D. Neither of the men was tall.
Answer: Option A is the correct sentence.
