Miss Earth is an annual international beauty contest promoting environmental awareness. Miss Earth is one of the Big Four International beauty contests in the world - the highly regarded and coveted beauty titles. Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Earth form the Big Four International beauty pageants. Miss Earth beauty pageant was first organized and conducted in 2001 by Carousel Productions as an international environmental event with the mission of promoting environmental awareness through the entertainment industry. In terms of the number of participants in the world finals, Miss Earth is one of the three largest beauty pageants alongside its rivals Miss Universe and Miss World.

The winner of the contest is bestowed the title Miss Earth; her runners-up are also given titles named after the other classical elements: Miss Fire (equivalent to third runner-up), Miss Water (second runner-up), and Miss Air (first runner-up), however, starting 2010 the runners up or the “elemental titles” (Air, Water and Fire) are of equal importance and thus have the same ranking.
The primary theme of Miss Earth competition is promoting environmental awareness and hence the prevailing titleholders dedicate their year to promote projects and address issues concerning the environment. The primary mediums of broadcasting environmental awareness is through school tours, tree planting activities, street campaigns, coastal clean ups, speaking engagements, shopping mall tours, media guesting, environmental fairs, storytelling programs to children, eco-fashion shows, and other environmental activities. Miss Earth prevailing titleholder is the spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other environmental organizations. The Miss Earth Foundation also works globally with the environmental departments and ministries of participating countries, along with Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF).
