Earth Mountain Ranges

Earth Mountain Ranges

shape Introduction

Mountain Ranges or Hill Ranges are defined as a series of mountains or hills ranged in a line and connected by high ground. A mountain system or mountain belt is defined as a group of mountain ranges with similarity in form, structure and alignment that have arisen from the same causes. Mountain Ranges are formed by a variety of geological processes, but most significantly most of the Earths' Mountain Ranges are the result of plate tectonics.
Earth's Mountain Ranges can contain sub-ranges which is often expressed as a parent-child relationship. For example, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Blue Ridge Mountains are sub-ranges of the Appalachian Mountains. Earth Mountain Ranges are classified on the basis of height, prominence, length, & continental area. The Earth Mountain Ranges article lists some of the famous Mountain Ranges on the planet Earth.
