Answer: Option (A)
5. Choose the word meaning OPPOSITE to the word: RELINQUISH

    A. Abdicate B. Renounce C. Possess D. Deny

Answer: Option (C)
Directions ( 1- 5): Rearrange the words to form a sentence.
1. He is, no doubt, very clever. He will fall into my trap.
(A) Although he is clever..... (B) If he is clever, he will fall..... (C) In spite of being clever he.....

    A. A and B B. Only A C. A and C D. Only C E. All the three

Answer: Option (C)
Explanation: The two sentences express contradictory ideas. Hence conjunctions like 'though' can combine the sentences meaningfully. 'Despite being ... or Inspite of being' ... can also be used to express the same idea.
2. He is too headstrong. He will not listen to advice.
(A) Unless he is too headstrong..... (B) If he is too headstrong..... (C) He is so headstrong that.....

    A. Only A B. A and C C. B and C D. A and B E. B and C

Answer: Option (E)
Explanation: Only A B. A and C C. B and C D. A and B E. Both the sentences talk about the same person. One qualifies the other. The conjunctions 'so ... that' and 'too ... to' can be used to combine the given sentences meaningfully. But B begins with 'if' and hence is incorrect.
3. The dog is a very faithful animal. The dog is the most loving pet.
(A) Besides being a very faithful animal, the dog is..... (B) Since the dog is a very faithful animal..... (C) The dog is a very faithful animal and.....

    A. A and B B. A and C C. B and C D. Only A E. Only C

Answer: Option (B)
Explanation: Both the sentences state the quality or characteristics of the dog. Hence 'and' and 'besides being' can be used to express the idea without any distortion. But the sentences do not suggest the idea that the dog is a 'loving pet since it is a faithful animal'. Hence starter B is inappropriate.
4. They will not win the match. It is certain.
(A) It is certain that they ..... (B) Although it is certain ..... (C) Unless they win the match .....

    A. Only A B. Only B C. Only C D. A and B E. None of these

Answer: Option (A)
Explanation: The second sentence ascertains or affirms the first statement. Hence starter A, which uses 'that', is the best way of combining these sentences. The use of 'although' or 'unless' distorts the meaning.
5. There is an increase in the incidents of violence these days. The police have tightened security.
(A) Because there is an increase ..... (B) As there is an increase ..... (C) While there is an increase .....

    A. Only A B. A and B C. Only B D. All the three E. None of these

Answer: Option (B)
Explanation: The reason for the security being tightened is because of the increase in the incidents of violence. This is conveyed in A and B.
Directions ( 1- 5): In each of the following questions, a paragraph with a blank is given. From the five choices given below, select the sentence which can go into the blank to make the paragraph logically coherent.
1. The threat perception level in Andhra Pradesh remains very high and available intelligence points to the presence of fundamentalist groups, and cash flows with foreign links. [------] To meet the challenge of terrorism successfully, these issues need to be addressed with a sense of urgency.
(A) All these need to be watched, monitored and analysed thoroughly if dastard, terrorist attacks are to be prevented. (B) A greater coordination among various wings of the state police and regular exchange of information and intelligence with the central agencies acquire importance in this exercise. (C) The success of anti-terrorism strategy depends on the strength and credibility of counter-intelligence.

    A. Only A B. A and B C. A and C D. Only C E. All the three

Answer: Option (B)
Explanation: 'All these' in statement A refers to the fundamentalist groups, cash flows, etc. mentioned in the first statement. These should be watched and monitored carefully in order to prevent terrorist attacks. Thus statement A has to follow the first sentence. Statement B which talks about yet another strategy to prevent terrorist attacks follows statement A and precedes the last statement which summarizes the paragraph by saying that these issues (i.e. The issues mentioned in statements A and B) should be addressed with a sense of urgency. Therefore statements A and B make a coherent paragraph with the first and last statements. C can follow the last sentence but not precede it.
2. Climate change and an increasing population could trigger a global food crisis in the next half century as countries struggle for fertile land to grow crops and rear animals. [----] Competition over sparse resources may lead to conflicts and environmental destruction, the scientists fear.
(A) To keep up with the growth in human population, more food will have to be produced world wide over the next 50 years than has been during the past 10,000 years combined, the experts said. (B) But in many countries a combination of poor farming practices and deforestation will be exacerbated by climate change to steadily degrade soil fertility, having vast areas unsuitable for crops or grazing. (C) The warnings came as researchers around the world convened at a United Nations-backed forum in Iceland on sustainable development to address halve hunger and extreme poverty by 2015.

    A. A and B B. Only B C. Only C D. None of these E. All the three

Answer: Option (B)
Explanation: The first sentence talks about how a change in climate and increasing population could lead to a food crisis. Statement A which talks about the opinion expressed by experts about how the growth in population will require increased production of food grains follows the first statement. Statement B which talks about the various factors which degrade soil fertility and leave the soil unsuitable for growing crops ideally precedes the last statement which talks about the consequences which this is likely to lead to. Therefore only A and B form a coherent paragraph along with the two given statements. C which can conclude the paragraph, can follow the last sentence but not precede it.
3. Despite strenuous efforts to ensure access to safe drinking water for people in developing countries, progress in reaching the unserved has been poor since 1990 [-----] Water related diseases continue to undermine the lives and well-being of the poor.
(A) Rapid population growth, slow coverage expansion and unplanned urbanization has led to inadequate, safe-water supplies. (B) Water availability is fundamental to health and hygiene practices. (C) Sanitation systems should be installed in order to safeguard the health of people.

    A. Only C B. B and C C. A and B D. Only B E. None of these

Answer: Option (E)
Explanation: None of three sentences can be inserted between the two sentences as the two sentences convey the meaning adequately.
4. The greatest discovery in the field of psychology is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind ------ This reveals that humans shape their destiny.
(A) As you think, so shall you be. (B) A person's success and failure depends upon his/her attitude. (C) Right direction leads an individual to achieve the set goals.

    A. Only A B. Only B C. A and B D. B and C E. Only C

Answer: Option (A)
Explanation: The first statement states that humans can alter their mind. Statement A supports the first statement by saying 'as you think so shall you be'. The last statement elaborates on this proverb. Therefore only statement A makes a logically coherent paragraph along with the two statements.
5. With the release of foreign exchange for travel through liberalization, the number of non-business travelers increased. ---- Realizing the Indian's penchant for shopping, many countries opened up their visa regime and made it easier for the visitors from the sub continent to spend a few days in their countries.
(A) The holidaying Indians went on a shopping spree wherever they could. (B) With the introduction of more airlines and low air fares travel abroad has become so much cheaper and accessible to a vast multitude of Indians today. (C) It may have been just Sri Lanka or Singapore to begin with but the ambit grew and the out-bound tourism industry recorded a phenomenal growth.

    A. Only A B. A and B C. Only B D. Only C E. A and C

Answer: Option (E)
Explanation: The first sentence talks about the increase in non-business travelers. Statement A follows the first statement as it carries the idea forward. C is a continuation of A. Therefore statements A and C can be inserted between the two given statements.
Directions ( 1- 10): In the following passage, there are ten blanks which are numbered with a word or phrase along with it and 4 words or phrases in options against it. Choose a word or phrase which fits the blank the best, if the word or phrase along the blank is correct to choose (E) No correction required as your answer.
Just before daybreak on July 16th 1945 Enrico Fermi __________1 (layed down) in the open desert of New Mexico. At 05:30, the world’s first nuclear explosion __________2 (taking into account) ten miles (16km) away. He __________3 (counted off) the seconds after the flash, anticipating the arrival of the blast-wave. With preternatural calm, Fermi stood up and let some strips of paper __________4 (flutter into) as the wave passed. They flew about eight feet. The Trinity nuclear test, he __________5 (pronounced after) making some quick calculations, had released the equivalent of about 10 kilotonnes of TNT. Fermi was, by that stage, already a celebrity among physicists. An obvious mathematics __________6 (genesis) as a child in Italy, he had devoured texts written for adults. Throughout his life he kept few books, preferring to derive conclusions from first principles whenever he felt the need. As he took up different posts in academic research in Italy and abroad, Fermi showed himself to be not only a theorist with __________ 7 (uncoordinated intellect) but also adept as an experimentalist (a rare combination) across every kind of physics. He had an uncanny knack for rough-and-ready calculations __________8 (for creating) approximate answers for damnably difficult questions (the Trinity bomb, later analysis revealed, released 18 kilotonnes of TNT, which was surprisingly close to Fermi’s desert estimation). He __________9 (pestered) complexity, preferring to tackle only a problem’s essentials, discard any distracting elements and ruthlessly squeeze what remained. Such back-of-the-envelope calculations, which became known as “Fermi problems”, were such good examples of critical thinking that recruiters nowadays test applicants’ mettle by setting them as interview questions. Fermi’s solutions were so __________10 (drastically erroneous) that his colleagues in Rome called him “the pope”. His boss recognized that he could help raise the reputation of Italian science.
1. Select option for answer-

    A. lay low B. laid off C. lay down D. lays up E. No correction required

Answer: Option (C)
Explanation: The blank requires a phrase to describe what Enrico Fermi did in the open desert of New Mexico. The phrasal verb laid down means to cause to lie down something. It must have an object. It is a regular verb, but note the spelling of the past simple and -ed form: LAID not layed.
2. Select option for answer-

    A. takes place B. takes the place of C. took place D. taking in as far as E. No correction required

Answer: Option (C)
Explanation: The blank requires a phrase to connect ‘the world’s first nuclear explosion’ with ‘ten miles (16km) away (from where Enrico was lying)’, thus TOOK PLACE meaning to happen ten miles (16km) away from where Enrico was lying is correct.
3. Select option for answer-

    A. counts upon B. countered upon C. counts on D. counted up E. No correction required

Answer: Option (E)
Explanation: Counted Off heremeans to count something in series here as Enrico counted the seconds after the flash, thus COUNTED OFF is correct to use here.
4. Select option for answer-

    A. flutters through B. fluttering by C. flutters up and down D. flutter away E. No correction required

Answer: Option (D)
Explanation: The sentence mentions that the waves were passing thus saying that the papers were fluttering away is correct. Thus FLUTTER AWAY meaning to move with an irregular motion – in this case the papers moved irregularly because of the wind is correct.
5. Select option for answer-

    A. renounce after B. pleasant / engaging C. renowned before D. renounced it E. No correction required

Answer: Option (E)
Explanation: The sentence mentions that Enrico made some quick calculations thus saying that he noticed that Trinity nuclear test had released the equivalent of about 10 kilotonnes of TNT. Thus PRONOUNCED which means marked to notice something conspicuous is correct along with AFTER as he noticed AFTER making the calculations.
6. Select option for answer-

    A. incoherent B. prodigy C. imbecile D. obtuse E. No correction required

Answer: Option (B)
Explanation: Prodigy is someone with a very great ability that usually shows itself when that person is a young child. Prodigy is correct to support the phrase “as a child in Italy” thus can be used to describe Enrico as he had already become renowned.
7. Select option for answer-

    A. surpassable cognition B. inceptive intellect C. unique intuition D. unparalleled insight E. No correction required

Answer: Option (D)
Explanation: The blank requires a phrase to describe Enrico Fermi as a genius, to support “Fermi showed himself to be not only a theorist with (some extraordinary quality) but also adept as an experimentalist (a rare combination) across every kind of physics”, this makes “unparalleled insight” correct as unparalleled meaning having no parallel or equal; exceptional is correct term for Fermi’s insight.
8. Select option for answer-

    A. to obtain B. to requisite C. to unique D. in conferring E. No correction required

Answer: Option (A)
Explanation: The sentence mentions that Enrico Fermi had an uncanny knack for rough-and-ready calculations; these calculations were for the purpose of acquiring approximate answers for damnably difficult questions. Thus TO OBTAIN means to get, acquire (something) is correct for the blank.
9. Select option for answer-

    A. yielded B. prevailed C. predominated D. eschewed E. No correction required

Answer: Option (D)
Explanation: The phrase “ preferring to tackle only a problem’s essentials, discard any distracting elements and ruthlessly squeeze what remained” suggests that Fermi concentrated on the main issue eliminating the complexities, thus Eschewed meaning to deliberately avoid using; abstain from (in this case complexity) is correct for the blank.
