What is SSC CHSL? SSC CHSL is an exam that is organized every year across the country by SSC i.e. Staff Selection Commission. CHSL stands for Combined Higher Secondary Level since it includes posts such as Lower Division Clerk, Data Entry Operator, Sorting/Postal Assistants, Court Clerk, etc. These posts offer almost the same salaries with slight differences in the incentives and perks.
What are the work profiles or job roles of those individuals who crack the SSC CHSL exam? The work profile and job responsibilities differ according to the post that a candidate gets recruited for after clearing the SSC CHSL exam.

  • The primary role of the Data Entry Operator is to retrieve and manage the data daily. Therefore, he/she needs to enter, maintain, and update the data in the database multiple times in a day.

  • A Data Entry Operator has to be alert and patient while maintaining the database since the government organizations and departments usually have to process a huge chunk of data.

  • He/she might also have to scan documents and take their prints to update the records in their respective files.

  • A DEO needs to collect the data from various sources at first and then they might need to prepare different structures like charts and tables to feed the data into the database in a coherent manner.

  • Also, if some of the information or data is incomplete, then the DEO (Data Entry Operator) will have to research to find the missing information.

  • If the Lower Division Clerk is absent or not available in the office then the DEO might need to draft letters and manage other duties of the LDC.

  • Moreover, the DEO must also be capable enough to access the data whenever required to provide the information that is needed for further procedures.
  • The job role of an LDC i.e. Lower Division Clerk usually includes maintenance of records, data, and files daily. Therefore, they must be able to handle all the office related work efficiently.

  • The LDC also needs to enter different types of information on the computer usually to create a backup of the available data.

  • The seniors might give different files or papers daily to an LDC. Therefore, he/she must maintain these papers and files carefully so that none of the records goes missing.

  • Likewise, an LDC must also produce the required documents and files whenever a senior officer requires them.

  • Also, an LDC needs to type letters, notices, and other important documents regularly.

  • He/she might have to prepare drafts and statements.

  • He/she needs to create salary slips of the members of the staff.

  • An LDC might have to monitor the correction or updates of the references books.
  • Court Clerks get recruited from the national level or state level examinations or they get appointed directly by the judge of the particular court. Therefore, their duties are similar to those of the Administrative Assistants.

  • A Court Clerk might serve in a civil or criminal court as per the requirements. Therefore he/she might be assisting lawyers, judges, and other dignified members of the court.

  • The basic duty of a Court Clerk is to maintain and manage the Court Records. He/she must store the records in a proper organized way in racks so that they are found quickly whenever the court requires them.

  • A Court Clear also performs the duty of administering the oaths that are taken by the witnesses or accused in the court hearings.

  • He/she has to maintain and keep a record of the Legal Documents and their receipts as well.

  • Also, a Court Clerk has to seal the judgment copies and court orders.

  • Usually, the clerk needs to create agendas of different meetings.

  • Court Clerks are also responsible for issuing permits and licenses.

  • A Court Clerk might sometimes need to create Bylaws/Draft Agendas for City/Town Councils.

  • Similarly, a Court Clerk needs to respond to official correspondence. He/she also has to carry out an extensive search to retrieve information for the lawyers and judges.
  • The post of PA i.e. Postal Assistant is of clerical cadre. The post of SA i.e. Sorting Assistant also belongs to the same position or rank.

  • These positions are usually required in Postal Offices and Departments of India.

  • The main duty of a PA is to maintain data and to dispose of mails.

  • Also, the PA/SA needs to answer the queries of the customers and provide a practical solution to their issues. Therefore, they have to fulfill the duty of a customer care executive at times.

  • The PA/SA to identify the correct address of the receiver. If they are unable to do so, he/she must identify the address of the sender.

  • If a PA is unable to identify the correct address of the receiver then he/she should re-send the mail to the sender again.

  • The PA/SA needs to manage the communication between Post and Mail offices.

  • A PA/SA has to monitor the transmission of international mails and articles by using the network of the Post Offices of our country.

  • To be able to fulfil the above-mentioned duties and responsibilities, the candidate must be well versed in English or any other language that the particular organization or department functions in.

  • The DEO must be skilled enough to enter the data in the correct form to get precise output. For that, he/she must be well-versed in the procedures and techniques involved in data programming.

  • Also, the candidate must have a basic understanding and knowledge of computers. Moreover, their typing speed must be good enough as they might need to type in English, Hindi, or any other regional language.
  • Basic knowledge about computers is a must.

  • The Lower Division Clerk must be pro-efficient in indexing, maintaining registers, registering, and other skills that are required to maintain files and records.
  • A Court Clerk must possess bookkeeping and accounting skills.

  • He/she must be well-versed in the administrative tasks that are carried in the courtroom daily.
A PA or SA must possess a basic knowledge of official work and computers.
