SSC CHSL General Instructions

shape Introduction

The SSC CHSL General Instructions contain details pertaining to various aspects of the examination and important instructions primarily to be followed on the days of different phases of selection process. Candidates are advised to read the instructions carefully during the different phases of selection process. Failure to follow the instructions will have dire consequences including cancellation of the candidacy.

Following items are not allowed inside the examination centre:
  • Any stationery item like textual material (printed or written), bits of papers, Geometry/Pencil Box, Plastic Pouch, Calculator, Scale, Writing Pad, Pen Drives, Log Table, Electronic Pen/Scanner.
  • Any communication device like Mobile Phone, Bluetooth, Earphones, Microphone, Pager, Health Band etc.
  • Other items like Goggles, Handbags, Hairpin, Hairband, Belt, Cap, Any watch/Wrist Watch, Camera, Any metallic item, Any eatable item opened or packed, water bottle.
  • Any other item which could be used for unfair means for hiding communication devices like camera, blue tooth devices etc.


Admission to the examination:
  • The photographs used by the candidates must be a recent, relaxed face, and the picture should be in color, against a light-colored, preferably white, background. If flash is used 13 then ensure that there is no red-eye and, in case of glasses, your eyes should be visible, the face should not cover less than 80 % of the entire photo.
  • Photograph should be of 8 bit JPG format and its size should be between 30-50 Kb with resolution of 100x120 (pixels) and signature of 140X60 (pixels).
  • It is compulsory to carry a Photo ID such as Voter’s ID, Driving License, ID Cards issued by Government or other Offices where the candidates may be working. Candidates without such ID cards will not be allowed entry into the examination halls/Skill Test venues.
  • Candidates should bring 3 passport size photographs for affixing it in the Commission’s copy of Admission Certificate in the presence of Invigilator, if required. Candidates not carrying photographs will not be allowed to appear in the examination. Candidate are advised to keep 10 copies of the same photograph, which was uploaded/affixed in the application form.

Particulars to be noted:
Please note carefully your Name, Roll Number, Ticket Number, date, time and venue for the examination given in the Admission Certificate. If any candidate finds any misprint/mistake in his/her Name, Roll Number, Ticket Number, Category, Address, etc., he should immediately get in touch with the concerned Regional Office and get the necessary correction made in the Admission Certificate. Seating plan will be displayed in the Venue as per Ticket Number.
Punctuality in Attendance: You should be present in the Examination Hall at least half an-hour before the exam and you will not be allowed to leave the Examination Hall until the exam is over. Candidates arriving after commencement of the examination will not be permitted to enter the Examination Hall.
Compliance with instructions: You should scrupulously follow the instructions given by Supervisor and the Invigilator at all the stages of the examination. No books, slide rules, notebooks, pagers, mobile phones, written notes, calculators and other electronic gadgets will be allowed inside the examination hall. Candidate who is found either copying or receiving assistance will be disqualified. Candidate offering assistance to other candidates will also be disqualified.
  • Candidates must write the papers/indicate the answers in their own hand. In the question papers, wherever necessary, the Metric systems of weights and measures only will be used.
  • Use of mobile phone, calculator and other electronic gadgets and their accessories is not permitted. Therefore, these should not, be brought inside the Examination Premises/Venue. Candidature of any candidate found to possess mobile phones or any other means of wireless communication or related accessories either in working or switched off mode, shall be cancelled forthwith. This will also invite further penal action as per the policy of the Commission.
  • The Candidates are advised to desist from use of any unfair method in the examination hall which will render them ineligible for further consideration for the examination and also lead to their debarment from Commission’s examinations in future beside inviting criminal prosecution.
  • If any candidate belonging to visually handicapped (VH) category does not write and shade the category code properly, they will be treated as not belonging to VH category.

Rough work to be done on the booklet: You should do the necessary rough work on test booklet/question paper. You Should not do your rough work on the answer sheet or any other paper. If any rough work is done on the answer sheet your answer sheet will not be assessed.

Guidelines for scanning and uploading the photograph (4.5cm × 3.5cm) & signature Before applying online, a candidate will be required to have a scanned (digital) image of his/her photograph and signature as per the specifications mentioned below.
  • Photograph must be a recent passport style color picture.
  • Make sure that the picture is in color, taken against a light-colored, preferably white, background.
  • Look straight at the camera with a relaxed face.
  • If the picture is taken on a sunny day, have the sun behind, or candidates should place themselfs in the shade, so that they are not squinting and there are no harsh shadows.
  • If he/she have to use flash, ensure there's no "red-eye".
  • If he/she wear glasses make sure that there are no reflections and the eyes can be clearly seen.
  • Caps, hats and dark glasses are not acceptable. Religious headwear is allowed but it must not cover the face.
  • Dimensions 200 x 230 pixels (preferred).
  • Size of file should be between 20kb–50 kb.
  • Ensure that the size of the scanned image is not more than 50kb. If the size of the file is more than 50 kb, then adjust the settings of the scanner such as the DPI resolution, no. of colors etc., during the process of scanning.
  • The applicant has to sign on white paper with Black Ink pen.
  • The signature must be signed only by the applicant and not by any other person.
  • The signature will be used to put on the Call Letter and wherever necessary.
  • If the Applicant's signature on the answer script, at the time of the examination, does not match the signature on the Call Letter, the applicant will be disqualified.
  • Dimensions 140 x 60 pixels (preferred).
  • Size of file should be between 10kb – 20kb.
  • Ensure that the size of the scanned image is not more than 20kb.
  • Signature in CAPITAL LETTERS shall NOT be accepted.
  • Set the scanner resolution to a minimum of 200 dpi (dots per inch).
  • Set Color to True Color.
  • File Size as specified above.
  • Crop the image in the scanner to the edge of the photograph/signature, then use the upload editor.
  • to crop the image to the final size (as specified above).
  • The image file should be JPG or JPEG format. An example file name is: image01.jpg or image01.jpeg. Image dimensions can be checked by listing the folder files or moving the mouse over the file image icon.
  • Candidates using MS Windows/MSOffice can easily obtain photo and signature in .jpeg format not exceeding 50kb & 20kb respectively by using MS Paint or MSOffice Picture Manager. Scanned photograph and signature in any format can be saved in .jpg format by using 'Save As' option in the File menu and size can be reduced below 50 kb (photograph) & 20 kb(signature) by using crop and then resize option (Please see point (i) & (ii) above for the pixel size) in the 'Image' menu. Similar options are available in other photo editor also.
  • If the file size and format are not as prescribed, an error message will be displayed.
  • While filling in the Online Application Form the candidate will be provided with a link to upload his/her photograph and signature.
  • There will be two separate links for uploading Photograph and Signature.
  • Click on the respective link "Upload Photograph/Signature".
  • Browse and Select the location where the Scanned Photograph / Signature file has been saved.
  • Select the file by clicking on it.
  • Click the 'Open/Upload' button. The respective files will be uploaded.
  • Make sure to enter all the details correctly. Do not misspell any important information especially the Names, Degrees and every other detail. Any discrepancies/mismatches will result in getting debarred from the selection process.
  • Online Application will not be registered unless the candidate uploads a photograph and signature as specified.
  • In case the face in the photograph or signature is unclear, the candidate's application may be rejected.
  • After uploading the photograph/ signature in the online application form candidates should check that the images are clear and have been uploaded correctly.
  • In case the photograph or signature is not prominently visible, the candidate may edit his/ her application and re-upload his/ her photograph or signature, prior to submitting the form.
  • After registering online, candidates are advised to take a printout of their system generated online application forms.

During Examination
  • Candidates are not allowed to communicate by word of mouth or otherwise with other candidates (this includes the time when answer scripts are being collected).
  • Candidates should raise the hand if he/she wish to communicate with an invigilator.
  • Unless granted permission by an invigilator, he/she are not allowed to leave the seat.
  • Once if a candidate entered the examination hall, he/she will not be allowed to leave the hall until one hour after the examination has commenced.
  • If, for any reason, candidates are given permission to leave the hall temporarily, he/she must be accompanied by an invigilator throughout thier absence from the examination hall. Cnadidates are required to leave thier handphone on the desk when they leave the hall temporarily.
  • All answers, with the exception of graphs, sketches, diagrams, etc. should be written in black or blue pen unless otherwise specified. Answers written in pencil will not be marked. The blank pages in the answer book are to be used only for candidates' rough work. Solutions or any other materials written on these blank pages will not be marked.
  • Do not write on, mark, highlight or deface any reference materials provided for the examination. If found doing so, the reference materials will be removed from his/her use for the rest of the examination and caniidate will be made to pay for the cost of the materials that have to be replaced.

At the End of the Examination
  • Candidates are NOT allowed to leave the examination hall during the last 15 minutes of the examination and during the collection of the answer scripts. All candidates must remain seated throughout this period for invigilators to properly account for all answer scripts to be collected.
  • Do NOT continue to write after the examination has ended. Candidates are to remain seated quietly while their answer scripts are being collected and counted.
  • No papers, used or unused, may be removed from the examination hall. he/she may take their own question paper with them unless otherwise instructed.
  • Candidates are to stay in the examination hall until the Chief Invigilator has given the permission to leave. Do NOT talk until they are outside of the examination hall.
  • Candidates are responsible to ensure that the answer scripts are submitted at the end of the examination. If he/she are present for the examination and do not submit their answer script, candidate will be deemed to have sat for and failed the examination concerned. Any unauthorised removal of answer script or part of answer script from the examination hall would deem the answer script as null and void.
  • Once dismissed, candidates should leave the examination hall quickly and quietly, and remember to take thier personal belongings with them.

Proof of identity to be submitted at the time of examination:
The candidates must bring one photo identity proof such as passport/Adhar/PAN Card/Driving Licence/ (Contd. on next page...) Voter's Card/Bank Passbook with duly attested Photograph/Identity Card issued by School or College/ Gazetted Officer in the official letterhead in original as well as a self-attested Photocopy thereof. The photocopy of Identity proof should be submitted along with call letter to the invigilators in the examination hall, failing which or if the identity of candidates is in doubt the candidate will not be permitted to appear for the test.
Action against candidates found guilty of misconduct:
Candidates are warned that they should not furnish any particulars that are false or suppress any material information while filling in the application form. Candidates are also warned that they should in no case attempt to alter or otherwise tamper with any entry in a document or the attested certified copy submitted by them nor should they submit a tampered/fabricated document. If there is any inaccuracy or any discrepancy, in filling OMR Sheet, they will not be evaluated.
Without prejudice to criminal action/debarment from Commission’s examination wherever necessary, the candidature will be summarily canceled at any stage of the recruitment in respect of candidates found to have indulged in any of the following:
  • In possession of mobile phone & accessories, blue tooth devices and other electronic gadgets within the premises of the examination centers, whether in use or in switched off mode and on person or otherwise.
  • Involved in malpractices.
  • Using unfair means in the examination hall.
  • Obtaining support for his / her candidature by any means.
  • Impersonate/ Procuring impersonation by any person.
  • Submitting fabricated documents or documents which have been tampered with.
  • Making statements which are incorrect or false or suppressing material information.
  • Resorting to any other irregular or improper means in connection with his/her candidature for the examination.
  • Misbehaving in any manner in the examination hall with the Supervisor, Invigilator or Commission’s representatives.
  • Taking away the Answer Sheet with him/her from the examination hall, or passing it on to unauthorized persons during the conduct of the examination.
  • Intimidating or causing bodily harm to the staff employed by the Commission for the conduct of examination.
  • Being ineligible for the Examination by not fulfilling the eligibility conditions mentioned in the Notice.
  • Candidature can also be canceled at any stage of the recruitment for any other ground which the Commission considers to be sufficient cause for cancellation of candidature.
