What is NIRF? The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), is a framework that outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. NIRF was approved by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) and launched by Minister of Human Resource Development on September 29, 2015. NIRF India Ranking 2020 is the fifth edition of NIRF rankings. The HRD Ministry has made participation by public institutions in the national institutional ranking framework (NIRF) mandatory from next year. Mr. Javadekar, Union Minister of HRD (Human Resource Development) said ” “And, those public institutions which will not take part in it will face fund cut,”.
NIRF framework as mentioned above gives a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall and immense understanding arrived by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters will cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.

NIRF Rankings 2020 - Ranking:

• The National Institutional Ranking Framework [NIRF] India Rankings 2020 were announced by HRD Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal on June 11, 2020. This year, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras topped the overall ranking.


• The rankings were announced under nine categories – Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, and Law.

IIT Madras has been ranked as the ‘Best Educational Institution’ in the Country in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2019, which was released on 8th April 2019 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. What are the Key Highlights of NIRF 2020 Ranking?

• AIIMS Delhi declared best medical college in India, PGI Chandigarh and CMC Vellore at second and third spot respectively


• In Management institute category, IIM Ahmadabad ranked first followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta.


• Miranda House, Delhi ranked No.1 in College category followed by LSR College, Delhi and Hindu College, Delhi


• In the University ranking category, IISc Bangalore ranked first followed by JNU and BHU.
