What is NIRF? The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), is a framework that outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. NIRF was approved by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) and launched by Minister of Human Resource Development on September 29, 2015. NIRF India Ranking 2018 is the third edition of NIRF rankings. The HRD Ministry has made participation by public institutions in the national institutional ranking framework (NIRF) mandatory from next year. Mr. Javadekar, Union Minister of HRD (Human Resource Development) said ” “And, those public institutions which will not take part in it will face fund cut,”.
NIRF framework as mentioned above gives a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall and immense understanding arrived by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters will cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.

NIRF Rankings 2019 - Ranking:

• The National Institutional Ranking Framework [NIRF] India Rankings 2019 were announced by President of India, Ram Nath Kovind on April 8, 2019. This year, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras topped the overall ranking.


• The rankings were announced under nine categories – Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, and Law.

What are the Key Highlights of NIRF 2019 Ranking?

• IIT Madras has been ranked as the ‘Best Educational Institution’ in the Country in the latest edition of National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2019, which was released today (8th April 2019) by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.


• The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore has topped in overall universities category.


• The Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi secured the second spot.


• In the management category or the B-school category, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore has taken over the IIM-Ahmedabad continuing the tussle between the two top-ranking management schools.


• Besides holding number one position in the overall institutes' category, the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has again bagged the top position in the engineering college category.


• In the overall category, The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and IIT-Delhi ranked second and third in the list respectively.


• IIT Madras also emerged as the ‘Top innovative Institution’ in the country in the maiden edition of the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA), launched by the Innovation Cell of MHRD in 2018, bagging the Rank no: 1 in Government Institutions category.


• NLS, Bengaluru, National Law school, Bengaluru has secured the first position among the best law varsities.


• Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kharagpur) bagged the first position in Architecture category, while IIT Roorkee has secured the second spot.
