• From 4th to 6th October 2018, 2nd edition of India Skills 2018, India’s biggest skill competition, was conducted in New Delhi.


• India Skills 2018 was organized by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. It aimed to identify, promote and reward the best talents in different skills.


• 450 participants took part in the competitions. 46 competition trades and 10 demonstration trades participated.


• Winners were awarded by Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Anant kumar Hegde and Subhash Ghai, Chairman of Media and Entertainment Skills Council and India Film Director.


• Some winners will be given more training and will be sent to represent India at the 45th World Skills Competition at Kazan, Russia in 2019.


• Persons with disabilities also participated. These winners will participate at the World level competition in Abilympics in China.

• On October 6, 2018, NITI Aayog member and former director general of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Vijay Kumar Saraswat inaugurated the ‘Green and Clean Fuel Pilot Project on Methanol cooking Stove’.


• This launched the country’s first methanol based cooking oil by Namrup-based Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL).


• It is the first of its kind in realizing the concept of NITI Aayog’s programme of ‘Methanol Economy’.


• Initially the product will be available only in the Northeastern Region.


• It is available in canisters of 1.2 kg capacity each, which will be priced at around Rs 32.And 18 Canisters will be equal to 1 domestic LPG Cylinder.

• On October 5, 2018, President Ramnath Kovind formally inaugurated the 4-day 4th India International Science Festival (IISF) 2018 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh for the first time.


• The theme of this year’s festival is Science for Transformation.


• This Festival aims to apply science and technology for transformation of the country and enable positive change for Social and Economic progress.


• It features 23 special events, and is being attended by about 10000 delegates.


• A “science village” was set up at National Botanical Garden in Lucknow for interaction of science with common people.

• On 6th October 2018, International Conference on Women’s Health, Wellness and Empowerment was held in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.


• The conference was organised by the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India and the Kanpur Obstetric and Gynaecological Society.


• Theme of the conference was: “Give her wings and let her soar.” President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the conference.


• He also addressed a seminar organised by the Talent Development Council, Kanpur. He unveiled a statue of the late freedom fighter Shyamlal Parshad in Kanpur.

• On October 3, 2018, RBI approved the proposal of Kerala government for the formation of Kerala Bank.


• The decision was taken by special task force headed by Chairman M S Sriram.


• The bank will be formed by consolidating State Cooperative Bank and the 14 district cooperatives.


• It will have a net deposit amount of Rs 650 billion.


• It will provide modern facilities to the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS).


• The unification will be completed by March 2019.

• On October 6, 2018, First Abu Dhabi Bank and Sound-based payment services provider ToneTag announced their tie up for implementing sound based contactless payments.


• This will allow the customers to pay using sound through the PayIt app and make cardless and cashless payments through their mobile phones.


• It will offer sound wave-based proximity payment solutions to their clients across all seven Emirates of UAE.

• The 36th National Games will be held from March 30 to April 14, 2019 in Goa.


• This announcement was made by Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) Executive Director V M Prabhudesai in Panaji.


• The Opening and Closing ceremonies will be held at PJN Stadium, Fatorda.


• Shooting and cycling events will be held in New Delhi since Goa does not have the facilities for these sports.


• Five sports: Rugby, Wushu, Modern Penthatlon, Lawn Bowl, and Billiards and Snooker, will be added to the Games programme.Expected budget of the Event is Rs.400 Crore.

• Srinivasan Swamy took charge as chairman and world president of the International Advertising Association (IAA) for 2 years, at an event in Bucharest, Romania, recently.


• Srinivasan Swamy replaces Felix Tataru. He is the first Indian to hold the chairman and world president post of IAA.


• In his new role, he will lead a team of 25 Executive Committee members from various countries. Also, India will host the 44thedition of ‘IAA World Congress’, in Cochin in 2019.


• He is the chairman of RK Swamy Hansa Group. He has received Global Champion award by the IAA and was inducted into the IAA India Chapter Hall of Fame in 2017.


• He is also Vice Chairman of Asian Federation of Advertising Associations. He had served in key positions in Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI), Advertising Standards Council of India and as board member of Audit Bureau of Circulations.

• On 1st October 2018, sprinter Hima Das joined Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) as HR Officer (Grade A).


• Hima Das will be posted at her state office in Guwahati, Assam. IOCL will provide necessary support for her training.


• Hima Das had won 3 medals, including gold in 4x400m women’s relay in Asian Games 2018. She had won a gold medal at the U-20 World Championship in Finland. She also received Arjuna award in 2018.


• IOCL will provide costs of travelling to different locations for participating in national and international track and field competitions.

• On 5th October 2018, Pankaj Sharma was appointed as the ambassador and India’s permanent representative to the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.


• Pankaj Sharma will replace Amandeep Gill. At present, Pankaj Sharma is the joint secretary (Disarmament and International Security Division) in the Ministry of External Affairs.


• He is an Indian Foreign Services (IFS) officer of 1991 batch. Currently he is a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

• On 4th October 2018, Oscar-winning animator Will Vinton passed away after fighting multiple myeloma in the United States.


• He was 70 years old. He received Oscar award for the animated short film ‘Closed Mondays’ (1975). He was also the founder of Will Vinton studios.
