  • The conversion of decommissioned carrier INS Viraat into a floating museum was approved by the Maharashtra Cabinet.

  • The ship is the world’s oldest aircraft carrier, according to the Indian Navy, which bought it in 1986 and recommissioned it a year later. At present, Viraat is at Mumbai’s Naval dockyard after its decommissioning in 2017.

  • The carrier will be housed on a concrete foundation near Nivati Rocks in Sindhudurg in Konkan region of Maharashtra.

  • The NBFC would focus on providing growth capital to industry with an initial focus on small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

  • United Kingdom scientists led by Matt Loose at Nottingham University, have created a new record for decoding the world’s longest DNA sequence.

  • The scientists have produced a DNA read that is nearly 10,000 times longer than normal. Also, it is two times larger than the previous record from Australia.

  • The DNA used for the long read was that of a human. At present, DNA is cut into smaller pieces and then reassembled during the process of sequencing.
China launches new high-orbit satellite to boost its BeiDou global satellite navigation system

  • China successfully launched a high orbit satellite to boost its BeiDou global satellite navigation system, from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in Sichuan Province, China.

  • This is the first BeiDou-3 satellite in high orbit, nearly 36,000 km above the Earth. It will follow the Earth’s rotation, in a geostationary orbit, and will view the same point on Earth continuously.

  • The satellite will serve countries in the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
