After deciding to take GRE, what follows next is to get acquainted with the GRE Test Registration process. The first and foremost thing that each and every candidate must know is that the test can be given in either computer-delivered or paper mode. While the computer driven test can be given year round, the paper-delivered test is scheduled for a maximum of three times in a year. The test is conducted at more than 1000 test centers across 160 countries. In order to get desired date and test center, candidates are always advised to register well in advance.

Test takers should review the checklist before registering for GRE Test to familiarize with the various policies and procedures, available services and registration options.

  • Check the test fees.

  • Read the reschedule and cancellation policies.

  • Read and understand the ID requirements. Test takers are responsible for bringing valid and acceptable ID while reporting to a test center, and it must match the name used when creating the account and registering for the test.

  • Test takers should decide when to take the test.

    • Computer - delivered Tests: The computer-delivered test is offered year round on a first-come, first-served basis. Check seat availability for preferred date and location.

    • Paper - delivered Tests: See test dates.

    • Be sure to allow sufficient time for score reporting when scheduling the test so that to meet the admissions deadlines for the schools to which the test takers applying for.

  • Test takers should create an ETS Account to get the most up-to-date test center information. Not all test centers are open on all dates.

  • Test takers should determine which graduate institutions or fellowship sponsors [Click Here] they want to receive their scores. As part of the test fee, test takers can designate up to four score recipients.

  • If test taker prefer to send score reports later or want to send score reports to more than four recipients, he/she can send additional score reports for a fee.

  • Learn about the FREE GRE Search Service and how graduate and business school recruiters around the world use it to find prospective students. Test takers will have the option to sign up for the Search Service when he/she register for the GRE General Test.

GRE Test Registration - ETS Account
  1. The account is free of cost and provides a free GRE Search Service. It lets test takers search the minimum scores that are accepted by the school or university of one’s choice. Also, institutions with whom the scores are matching, can reach out to the aspirant via ETS account.

  2. Test takers can register for GRE/TOEFL/TOEIC using ETS Account.

  3. Using ETS Account test takers can apply for testing accomodation.

  4. The test taker can change the name used for registering, contact number and other details at any point of time or even cancel registration in the event of failure to sit for the examination. Cancelation shall be done atleast four days before the test date to get fee refund.

  5. Test taker can view the scores, order additional score reports (ASRs).

  6. ETS account can be used to order test preparation materials and access free GRE Diagnostic Service.

  7. Test taker can opt for receiving notifications with regards to the test and scores via text messages in addition to the email service.
ETS Account - How to create ETS Account? In order to take GRE, the candidate needs to make an Educational Testing Service Account or ETS account. In case the candidate already has an account of TOEFL or Praxis programs, details of the same, username and password can be used to access the ETS account. For creating an ETS account:

  • Go the official site of GRE and click on “Create an Account”.

  • Details required for registering: Name, Contact information, Social Security Number etc; Candidate will be then directed to create a username and password. This shall be the login credentials.

  • The name that is used while creating the account should be same as the name used while registering for GRE and should match with the ID proof. Failure in doing so may result in cancellation of the scores and prohibition from taking GRE.

GRE Test Registration - GRE General Test
The GRE General Test is offered year-round as a computer-delivered test in most locations around the world. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Test takers should register early to get the preferred test date and test location: online or by phone.
GRE General Test - Registration
Register to Test in the United States, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada There are two ways to register for the computer-delivered GRE General Test in these locations: online or by phone.
  • Test takers need to create or have an ETS Account to register online.

  • Test takers need to register at least two calendar days before the preferred test date.

  • American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or Visa credit/debit cards are accepted. Payment by e-check (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only), PayPal and voucher numbers are also accepted.

  • If test takers are paying with a paper check or money order, he/she need to request an Authorization Voucher by mail.

  • Online registration is not available for test takers with disabilities or health-related needs. [Click Here] to see Disability Accommodations.
  • Call the test center directly or Prometric Services at 1-443-751-4820 or 1-800-473-2255 at least two business days before the preferred test date.

  • American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, or Visa credit/debit cards are accepted. Payment by e-check (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only) and voucher numbers are also accepted.

  • If test takers are paying with a paper check or money order, he/she need to request an Authorization Voucher by mail.

  • A confirmation number, reporting time and test center address will be given to test taker through call.

Requesting an Authorization Voucher by Mail Test takers need to request an authorization voucher by mail if he/she are paying with a paper check or money order.

  • Test takers should fill the Computer-delivered GRE General Test Authorization Voucher Request Form [Click Here] and mail with a paper check or money order with the appropriate payment to the address printed on the form.

  • Allow up to three weeks for processing and mail delivery.

  • When test taker receive the authorization voucher, he/she can register online or call Prometric Services at 1-443-751-4820 or 1-800-473-2255 to schedule an appointment.

  • An appointment to test must be made prior to the expiration date on the authorization voucher.

  • If a test taker lose the authorization voucher, he/she can contact ETS. Only one replacement will be issued.

Register to Test Outside the United States There are two ways to register for the computer-delivered GRE General Test outside the United States: online or by phone.
  • Test taker need to create or have an ETS Account to register online.

  • Test takers need to register at least two business days before the preferred test date.

  • American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or Visa credit/debit cards are accepted. Payment by e-check (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only), PayPal and voucher numbers are also accepted.

  • If test takers are taking test in Mainland China, refer to the instructions in NEEA Account for payment methods.

  • If test takers are taking test in Nigeria, only Visa, PayPal and voucher numbers are accepted.

  • If test takers are paying with a paper check or money order, he/she need to request a GRE General Test Authorization Voucher by mail.

  • Call the appropriate Regional Registration Center (RRC) [Click Here] at least two business days before the preferred test date.

  • Use an American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, Visa credit/debit card. Payment by e-check (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only) and voucher numbers are also accepted. If test takers are taking test in Nigeria, only Visa and voucher numbers are accepted.

Payment Method Payments may also be made by personal paper check. Make payable to ETS-GRE (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only). If paying by check, please comply with the following:

  • Bank name and its address should be preprinted on the face of the check.

  • A check must have a preprinted check number.

  • A check must include candidate or payee name and address.

  • Check date CANNOT be over 90 days old.

  • New bank account starter checks missing the preprinted name and address are not acceptable.

Payment Policies
Following are the Payment policies for GRE General test.

  • A check in U.S. dollars must be drawn on a bank in the United States. By sending the check, aspirants are authorizing ETS, at its discretion, to use the information on their check to make a one-time electronic debit from the account for the amount of their check; no additional amount will be added. If test takers do not have sufficient funds in their account, an additional service fee of US$20 will be debited electronically from the account. Contact ETS to learn about other payment options if prefer not to have the check used in this way.

  • If test takers do not have sufficient credit or funds in the account to cover a registration or service that ETS have processed on their behalf, the test takers scores will be withheld and an additional service fee of US$20 will be added to the account.

  • If test takers does not include the correct fee, the request for registration or service will be returned.

  • Taxes must be included where applicable.

  • There are no refunds for additional services.

  • Refunds will be made in U.S. dollars.

  • Services may be withheld for nonpayment of fees.

  • All test fee payments must be made in full, have the correct numeric and written dollar amount, and be received at the regional registration center (RRC) or ETS within 90 days of the date on the payment (e.g., check, money order).

  • All outstanding balances incurred from prior ETS tests and/or services must be paid in full in order to register for any future ETS test or service.

  • ETS reserves the right to add or remove online payment methods at its own discretion and without notice.

Refund Policies
If test takers cancel registration no later than four days before the test date, they will automatically receive a refund equivalent to half of the test fee. For example, the deadline to cancel a Saturday appointment at a testing location in the United States is Tuesday. The remainder of the payment will be retained to cover expenses for processing aspirant’s registration and holding space at the test center.


  • Refunds will be in U.S. dollars.

  • Cash refunds are not available.

  • Refunds will not be given if test takers do not follow proper registration procedures and/or fail to present the required identification documents at the test center.

  • Korea has the specific refund policy for test takers, candidates who are taking the test in Korea will have seven days after registering to receive a full refund:

    If test takers cancel their registration within the time frame for a 100 percent refund, the paid test fee amount will be credited in two separate transactions to the respective credit/debit card. Each transaction will be 50 percent of the fee.

Payments by Credit/Debit Card
  • A refund will be processed and credited back to the original credit/debit card or bank account.

Payments by E-Check and PayPal
  • A refund will be processed and credited back to the original PayPal or bank account.

Payments by Check
  • If original payment was a check, ETS refund the amount in 8 weeks to be processed in case of cancellation.

Test takers in Mainland China
  • For test takers in Mainland China, need to reschedule or cancel their test registration no later than 10 days before the test date. Follow the instructions on the NEEA website for requesting a partial refund and additional payment policies.
Fee Reduction Program
ETS offers a limited number of GRE Fee Reduction Certificates on a first-come, first-served basis that are available for college seniors and unenrolled college graduates who meet eligibility requirements. A Fee Reduction Certificate may be used for one GRE General Test and/or one GRE Subject Test. Individuals meeting the eligibility requirements will be required to pay 50 percent of the full test fee. To be eligible, test takers must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien who is a college senior or an unenrolled college graduate.
College seniors must be:

  • receiving financial aid through an undergraduate college in the United States, American Samoa, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico, and

  • a dependent, who has an Institutional Student Information Report (ISIR) that shows a parental contribution of not more than $2,500 for the senior year, or

  • Self-supporting and have an ISIR that shows a contribution of not more than $3,000 for the senior year

Unenrolled college graduates must:

  • Have applied for financial aid, and

  • Have an ISIR that indicates self-supporting status and a contribution of not more than $3,000

To apply for a GRE Fee Reduction Certificate:

  • Contact the financial aid office at the undergraduate institution or prospective graduate institution to see whether qualified or not.

  • Once the eligibility is established, the financial aid office will issue a Fee Reduction Certificate and a copy of the ISIR.

  • Follow the instructions on the certificate. Allow up to three weeks for processing and mail delivery.

Letter requests, photocopies, and faxes of Fee Reduction Certificates will not be accepted. Fee Reduction Certificates are not retroactive and they cannot be replaced if lost or stolen. There are no refunds for unused Fee Reduction Certificates and no refunds will be provided to examinees who are not admitted to the test for any reason (including unacceptable identification).
Individuals who have met the eligibility requirements and received a GRE Fee Reduction in the past year may retake the GRE General Test and/or a GRE Subject Test with a Fee Reduction without submitting a Fee Reduction Certificate and a copy of their ISIR. Fee Reduction Certificates/Vouchers cannot be combined with other offers.
ETS offers a limited number of GRE Fee Reduction Certificates to individuals who can confirm that they are unemployed and receiving unemployment compensation. Qualified individuals can register to take the computer-delivered GRE General Test for half the cost of the regular test fee.

  • Test takers will receive a confirmation email from ETS that confirms the test choice, test date, test center and score recipients. To correct personal data, contact GRE Services.

  • Test takers may be asked to provide a biometric voice sample and photo. If a test taker refuse to participate, he/she may not be permitted to test and are forfeit for test fees.
