GRE Disability Accommodations

ETS serves test takers with disabilities and health-related needs by providing services and reasonable accommodations that are appropriate given the purpose of the test. GRE disability accommodations for testing are provided for those candidates who meet the ETS requirements.
Extension of test time -
  • 50 percent (time and one-half)
  • 100 percent (double time; documentation required)
Additional breaks - The breaks are not included in the testing time and can be used for medication, snacks, trips to the restroom and more. GRE Disability Accommodations only for computer-based GRE General test -
  • Screen magnification
  • IntelliKeys keyboard
  • Keyboard with touchpad
  • Selectable background and foreground colors
  • Trackball
  • Ergonomic keyboard
Assistance -
  • Reader
  • Scribe
Assistance for Spoken Directions Only -
  • Oral interpreter (Only applicants who are deaf or hard-of-hearing)
  • Sign language interpreter (Only applicants who are deaf or hard-of-hearing)
  • Printed copy of spoken directions (for paper-delivered tests only)
  • Assistance for Note Taking
  • Braille slate and stylus (only applicants who are blind or have low vision)
  • Perkins braille (only applicants who are blind or have low vision)
Alternate Test Formats -
  • Braille (only applicants who are blind or have low vision)
  • Large-print test book
  • Recorded audio
  • Recorded audio with tactile figure supplement (only applicants who are blind or have low vision)
  • Recorded audio with large-print figure supplement (only applicants who are blind or have low vision)
  • Computer-voiced with tactile figure supplement (only applicants who are blind or have low vision) (GRE General Test in the U.S. only)
  • Computer-voiced with large-print figure supplement (only applicants who are blind or have low vision) (GRE General Test in the U.S. only)
  • All the aspirants requesting any accommodations must submit their requests and have their accommodations approved by ETS Disability Services before their test can be scheduled.
  • The request should be submitted as early as possible, especially if requesting any alternate test format.
  • Documentation review takes approximately six weeks once after placing the request and complete paperwork will be received.
  • If additional documentation must be submitted, it can be another six weeks from the time the new documentation is received until the review is complete.
  • Once after approved, ETS will send an email providing instructions for registering for the GRE test. One should wait for the approval email before registering to test.
In order to submit a request, one should send all completed forms and documentation via one of the following methods.
Methods
Online One can apply for accommodations online in their respective ETS Account. To do this-
  • Log into ETS account.
  • Click on "GRE Accommodation Status/New Request" under the "Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-Related Needs" section on the home page and follow the instructions.

The Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs contains procedures and forms for requesting testing accommodations.
