• US President Donald Trump has taken a victory lap one day after his impeachment acquittal, in a White House tirade against his political enemies.

• India’s Ambassador-Designate to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu presented his credential to President Donald Trump in his Oval Office of the White House.


• Trump, during the Oval Office credentials ceremony, warmly welcomed Sandhu, a career foreign service official, back to Washington DC and wished him success in his responsibilities as India’s ambassador to the US.


• “The President fondly recalled his friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and their several interactions,” the Indian Embassy said in a statement.

• The official Chinese death toll from the coronavirus outbreak rose on Friday to 636, with the government saying total infections had climbed past 30,000.


• The toll was raised by 73 new deaths from the epidemic, the National Health Commission said in its daily update.


• Another 3,143 new cases of infection were confirmed, bringing total infections in the country thus far to 31,161, it said.

• The US International Trade Commission said it was launching a patent investigation into certain audio players and controllers sold by Alphabet's Google based on a complaint by rival smart speaker maker Sonos.


• The ITC received a complaint from Sonos last month alleging that the import of certain audio players and controllers and their components infringe on its patents.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam today to participate in an event to celebrate the signing of the Bodo peace deal, an accord between the government and the banned militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland, last month.


• This will be PM Modi's first visit to the state since the government's big move on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that triggered protests across the country, including in Assam. Three people were killed in the state in the violence.

• Pointing to the lack of efficient overland connectivity between India and the Central Asian countries, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that the two regions should examine the viability of establishing air corridors between them to boost trade and economic engagement.


• He added that India plans to overcome this lack of overland connectivity by using the route passing through the Chabahar Port in Iran.

• Three impersonators were caught and 14 candidates expelled from different centres in Bihar on the fourth day of intermediate examination conducted by the Bihar Secondary Education Board (BSEB).


• Of the expelled candidates, six cases were booked in Nalanda, three in Gopalganj, two in Saran, Madhepura, and Jamui and one each in Bhojpur and Gaya districts. The impersonators were caught in Muzaffarpur, Banka, and Nawada districts.

• JNU administration called an emergent meeting to approve both regular and alternative modes of examinations in a bid to complete the last semester which had faced boycott by students over the fee hike issue.


• The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association (JNUTA) alleged that the academic council approved the alternative exam modes - via email or WhatsApp - even though 12 out of 18 schools and special centers had rejected the idea.

• Clearing of bank cheques is set to become faster. In its sixth bi-monthly monetary policy statement, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said it would implement the Cheque Truncation System (CTS) across the country by September 2020.


• In CTS, banks use scanned copies of cheques for settlement instead of the physical copy. It makes the cheque clearing process partially electronic.

• Domestic stock markets started Friday's session on a lacklustre note amid weakness in Asian peers, after a four-day rally in which benchmark indices climbed 4 per cent.
