• Abu Dhabi’s long-troubled Etihad Airways said it would sell 38 aircraft to an investment firm and a leasing company in a deal valued at USD 1 billion, the latest cost-cutting measure by the United Arab Emirates’ national carrier.


• Etihad said it would sell 38 aircraft — 22 Airbus A330s and 16 Boeing 777-300ERs — in the deal with investment firm KKR and leasing firm Altavair AirFinance. KKR said the Boeing 777-300ERs will “be leased back to Etihad upon purchase in early 2020,” while the Airbus A330s will go to international clients.

• Researchers from a key Chinese lab have applied to patent a US-made drug they found to be effective in pre-clinical tests in treating the novel Coronavirus.


• The research led by the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) found that two drugs - redeliver and the generic chloroquine - could inhibit or check the Coronavirus.


• The WIV, as reported by HT earlier, is the only institute in China to have a bio-safety level 4 laboratory, a lab, which is equipped to deal with the deadliest pathogens in the world including Ebola and the Coronavirus family.

• Italy sees itself as an alternative entry point to European markets for Indian firms following Britain’s exit from the European Union (EU), and the large Indian diaspora can help drive trade and investment, Italian ambassador Vincenzo de Luca has said.


• “There is certainly potential to attract more investment [and] more companies from India to Italy. We have already had an important increase in the number of Indian companies investing in Italy,” he said in an interview.

• Union home minister and former BJP president Amit Shah met BJP corporators in the capital on Wednesday night ahead of the February 8 polls following reports that some corporators were not following the party’s instruction on campaigning and supporting the local candidate.

• Kerala told the Supreme Court that it has initiated the process for drafting a law exclusively for Sabarimala Temple’s management and sought more four weeks to complete the process in consultation with Attorney General for India, KK Venugopal.


• A bench of justices NV Ramana, Sanjiv Khanna, and Krishna Murari granted the request when senior counsel Jaideep Gupta, who represents the state, told the Supreme Court about the process and sought the extra time.

• Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das-led Monetary Policy Committee will release its sixth bi-monthly policy statement of 2019-20 after the end of a three-day review meeting which started on February 4.


• In the statement, to be released at 11:45 am today, the RBI will announce its decision on the repo rate, which is the key interest rate at which it lends short-term funds to commercial banks.
