SAT Test Disability Accommodations

What is SAT?
  • It is simply a paper-pencil based test that is offered by the College Board for aspirants or test takers who need the scores for pursuing undergraduate programmes in the US Colleges, Higher Institutions or Universities.

What is Disability? This is a situation that arises or the condition of being unable to perform fully as a human should due to, as a result or consequence of physical or mental ailment or unfitness. A person involved in this, is referred as being disabled.
What is Accommodation?
It simply means to make or become suitable, thereby adjusting to circumstances.
What is SAT Disability Accommodation (SDA)?
  • This refers to the considerations or opportunities made available by the College Board to enable or make suitable for the disabled aspirants or test takers like the blind to adjust and be able to sit for the SAT Test despite the condition or circumstances.
  • In ensuring the accommodation for disabled aspirants or test takers on College Board SAT Tests, it was termed Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD).

Who is Eligible for SDA on College Board Application? Only aspirants or test takers with documented disabilities (evaluation or report from doctor stating the disability, the degree to which the aspirant is affected and need for specific request of accommodation) such as;
  • Blindness
  • Visual impairments
  • Learning disorders
  • Physical impairments
  • Mental impairments
  • Motor impairments etc.

  • And only if the disabilities listed above affects the test taker participation in the test.

Is the SAT Disability Accommodation (SDA) the same for all disabled aspirant? No, there are different considerations for the disabled test takers based on each requested needs of disability. How can an aspirant with disability opt in for Student Disability Accommodation (SDA)? The test taker has to submit a request to the College Board for Approval. Is there any deadline for submission of disability request and what does it result to? Yes there is and if a disabled aspirant didn’t apply for accommodation before then; likely it won’t be approved.
How long does the SDA Request process takes? It can take 7 weeks approximately because all required documentation needs to be received for scrutiny.
What is next after an aspirant is approved for SDA? The test taker should always provide the SSD number when registering and taking the SAT.
What if a disabled aspirant can’t locate the SDA pertaining to the test taker specified by the Board? The disabled aspirant should submit a request of such to the Board for reviewing by SSD.
What happens when an aspirant Use the Accommodations offered by the College Board if not approved? It leads to the cancellation of or invalid test scores for such aspirant or test taker.

What is a Typical Accommodation? These are set out considerations by the College Board for the accommodations of aspirants or test takers with documented disabilities based on reasonable requests. The typical accommodations provided includes; Time Extension: approved disabled aspirants for this accommodation of extension has either 50% (4h:30m – without essay, 5h:45m – with essay), 100% (6h – without essay, 7h:40m – with essay) or 150% (7h:30m – without essay, 9h:35m – with essay)
SAT additional time with the following criteria;
  • Stays longer for the test than other test takers
  • Must state the amount of time approved for the time extension.
  • Must stay till the extended time elapses.
  • Walks more slowly than other aspirants due to disability.

Use of Computers for Essays: a disabled aspirant can request and get approved or allowed to use the word processing function of a computer to write short answer responses and essays in a school if the test taker is;
  • Physically unable or impaired ability to write
  • Dysgraphia
  • Disorders in severe language-based learning

Extended and Extra Breaks: most disabled aspirants that applied for accommodation are granted extra, extended and longer breaks for test sections, subjects or as needed than other normal aspirants and they fall within the following;
  • Physically or Medically conditioned
  • ADHD
  • Inability to test for an extended time

Seeing and Reading Accommodations: for disabled aspirants approved by the College Board as test takers that needs assistance with seeing and reading are provided with Large print test book, Braille test book, Braille graphs, MP3 audio test format, Reader and Magnifier or magnifying machine if the aspirant is;
  • Blind
  • Severe Reading Difficulty
  • Other Visual Impairment

Four-Function Calculator: a disabled aspirant that is unable to perform a mathematical calculation due to inability is provided this accommodation of using this calculator for no permit use of a calculator on test sections if the test taker is;
  • Approved by the College Board for SSD
  • Impaired in mathematics or dyscalculia
What are the Provisions for approved aspirants of SAT Disability Accommodation by College Board?
The disabled aspirants are provided with this accommodation materials to ensure they face no barriers when taking the exams and they are based on;
Presentation: for assistance for displaying the SAT test, there is provision for
  • Braille Device used for written responses
  • Braille Graphs
  • Braille
  • MP3 for an audio test format
  • Assistive technology for a compatible test format
  • Colored overlays
  • Magnifier or magnifying machine for visual magnifications
  • Presence of oral instructors/instructions for the signed
  • Use of a highlighter
  • A reader for reading the entire test
  • Large print of 14pt., 20pt., etc.

Responding: for a disabled aspirant to successfully answer test, the test taker will use;
  • Test booklet for recording answers
  • Answer sheet of large-block
  • Computer with deactivated features of spell-check, grammar, cut and paste
  • A Tape recorder
  • Verbal that is dedicated to scribe

Timing/Scheduling: for a test completion of a disabled aspirant, the test taker would be made available with;
  • Time Extension
  • Frequent breaks
  • Multiple test day with an extra or no extra time
  • Specified time of the day

Setting: this refers to the provisions for disabled aspirants to feel comfortable in the places to be used as test centers and they include;
  • Availability and accessibility of a wheel chair
  • Preferential treatment for seating
  • Alternative test center with the presence of a proctor
  • Private room
  • Maintaining a small group arrangement

  • Other provisions for disabled aspirants includes;
    • Auditory Amplifier or FM System
    • Permission for medication or feeding Use of Four-function calculator in test sections where calculator is not allowed.
    How can an eligible disabled aspirant request for SDA?
    A disabled test taker can request for SDA through the following;
      SSD Online: Most families that have disabled aspirants for SAT choose to adapt this method of working with school because the offer SSD coordinators that are often specialist, education coordinators, guidance directors or school counselors whose major functions are;
    • To know the documentations or guidance needed for accommodation and how to request for them.
    • Using the SSD Online to request and submit for SAT testing accommodation to College Board Exam.

    Paper-student Eligibility Form: this has to do with requesting and filling this form by the parents or guidance of the disabled aspirant and submitting directly to the College Board by mail or fax for review. This method is normally recommended for home- schooled aspirants
    When are the deadlines for upcoming submission for SDA?
      The deadlines available now for 2018/2019 SDA Application are;
      • March 15, 2019 – for SAT and SAT Subject Tests taking place on May 4, 2019.
      • April 12, 2019 – for SAT and SAT Subject Tests taking place on June 1, 2019.
    What are the criteria for Disability Documentation?
      For preparing documentation for disabled aspirants of ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Communication Disorders, Head Injuries, Hearing Impairments, Learning Disorders, Physical/Medical Disabilities, Psychiatric Disorders, Tic Disorders/Roulette's, Visual Impairments and Other Disabilities, the following should be highlighted;
      • A clearly stated diagnosis
      • The presented information should be correct
      • Presentation of the educational, developmental and medical history
      • A supported claim of diagnosis
      • Description of the functional limitations
      • Justifying the accommodations that were recommended
      • The professional credentials of the reporter should be established

    • Affected Disabled Aspirants can obtain SDA if found eligible and submitted a documented request that is approved by the Board before the test taker can present, register and allowed for use of Accommodations during SAT Administration.
    • But Aspirants with temporary conditions are not granted with SDA but there is support for them through this link.
