civil rights movement
The civil rights movement started during the period of the late 50’s and early 60's, with the core purpose of gaining equal rights for everyone. It was the biggest revolution in America and many people dedicated their lives for the success of this movement.
Most people believe that the civil rights movement was initiated by Rosa Parks, which, however, is not true. No one can deny the efforts she made to make this movement successful but the idea was born in 1954 at the Board of Education of Topeka. It all started because the African Americans were being treated in a very inhumane manner and served as slaves to the white. This is where the Black Panther Party came in, whose founders were Huey P and Bobby Seale. They promoted self-defense and civil rights and educated the black men about their rights as humans. The Black Panther party believed that the blacks will never fit into the American culture and will never be respected as the whites. On the Other hand, Martin Luther King made all his efforts to promote the idea, that African Americans are a part of America and will be given equal rights.
The party did not allow any white to become a member until they realized they needed the support of other minorities in the country to support their stance. After dedicated efforts for years, determination and firm belief the civil rights movement actually succeeded. No one would have thought this as possible but, it was the result of unshaken belief and strong devotion of our ancestors that today America sees a Black president. The civil rights movement seemed to be vague at that time and no one believed that slaves will get equal rights. The blacks themselves did not believe that someday they will be treated as respectable men and will run and own business in America. Our ancestors did their best and convinced others with extreme struggle and well thought-out logic that we need to have a society, where people believe in equality.
Back in the 50’s it was almost impossible to believe that America will be close to a utopian society, where everyone gets their rights. If it wasn’t for Rosa Parks or Mr. Martin Luther King, we would not be living in a country where racial discrimination is overcome and people are evaluated on the basis of merit and capability rather than caste or creed.

A Letter to the Editor of a Newspaper About Noise Pollution

The Editor,
Hindustan Times, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi-110001.
Sir,
Apropos your Editorial and a few news-items on Environmental Pollution published recently, I want to underline the problem of noise pollution in the big cities and towns of our country. It has been causing bearing damage to thousands of people. If it goes on increasing at the present rate, it is estimated that by the turn of the present century only a few people above the age of ten will have normal hearing capacity in many of our most industrialized cities. Many of us are still not aware of how dangerous is noise pollution. It is ubiquitous and all around emanating from continuous traffic, industries, factories, workshops, household activities, construction work, the airplanes flying above, rock and pop music and the loudspeakers used for various purposes including marriages, religious preachings, and entertainment.
Noise harms us in so many ways. It disturbs our sleep, rest, peace, and causes irritation, annoyance and mental tension. It interrupts the flow of our thoughts and adversely affects both our mental and physical health.
Sometimes a noise may not arouse us from sleep, but certainly, it affects badly our rest at the level of quality and quantity. It may go unnoticed, but it certainly produces profound psychological changes in the human body. Frequent loud noise may cause the decreased flow of blood in the small vessels, dilation of pupils, tensing of muscles, digestive tip-sets, nervousness, and anxiety. It lowers the working efficiency, especially in workers requiring concentration and accuracy. The most glaring harmful effect of noise is in the form of gradual loss of sense of healing.
Noise control laws are there, but they are not of much help because they are not stoutly enforced by the authorities. Only increased public awareness can deal with the menace which is growing more and more dangerous Gay by day. Noise should be checked and kept within safe limits. It is the duty of the government and administration to see that noise does not pose a danger to the well being of the citizens. Factories, workshops and repair shops of vehicles, eta., located in the residential areas should be removed immediately. Heavy vehicular traffic should not be allowed in the city during the peak hours of traffic. Blowing of horns, etc., should also be checked.
A new concept suggests that planting of trees can also reduce noise pollution to some extent. Moreover, uncontrolled and unnecessary noise should be checked by the strict enforcement of rules and regulations. The public should also cooperate with the authorities in the control of noise. Without public cooperation, nothing appreciable can be achieved in this respect. The use of loudspeakers should be totally banned, especially in the areas having schools, hospitals, libraries, etc.
Yours truly,
