shape Set 1

Listen to a conversation between two students.
TOEFL Listening Practice - Conversation 1 - Audio
Dave: Hi Jane.... Wow, you're early today!
Jane: Hi Dave. Yeah, I still have another hour before my next class, so I thought I would come into the library to take a nice, quiet break. What are you doing here?
D: I thought I would come in to look over a few notes. It's a good way for me to keep up on my courses.
J: Oh, what courses are you taking this year?
D: Um...well, I've decided to major in Psychology.
J: Really? I thought there were already too many psych majors out in the workforce.
D: Well, um, actually no, not really and it's a good choice to make. After my four years, I'll be able to pursue quite a few jobs in the mental health field, including internships.
J: Psychology sounds pretty easy to me. It seems like all you need is to use common sense, really.
D: That's what a lot of people think. But Psychology involves rigorous training from statistics to neuroscience which requires taking a set of in-depth courses. The field is actually a science and it takes lots of discipline.
J: Wow, I wasn't really aware of that! So...ah... you're really going to become a psychologist, then.
D: Well, I may not actually be a "psychologist" until I complete graduate training, but I'll be able to put my skills to use.
J: What types of jobs could you have?
D: For one, I could work in business and industry or educational institutions. I could also get work in government. I could also become self-employed, although there's only a small amount of graduates who actually work in the field of psychology right after they graduate. They go into fields like marketing, advertising and sales, social work, child care, and counseling.
J: That sounds very interesting and you get a good variety of work to choose from after you graduate.
D: Yeah, but they pay for many of these positions is very low since many education and social service fields are underfunded. I suppose I'll be sacrificing my salary by doing what I'll enjoy.
J: I've decided to play it safe myself.
D: Why's that?
J: By going for my B.A. in Business Administration. My main interests are in art but I wanted to go for more security by doing something in business.
D: You always were creative in high school, I remember... Are you sure you'll be happy pursuing something in business as opposed to what you truly like?
J: I can't really say for sure. Maybe I'll take a few electives in art just to keep up on things. I'm also interested in Ecology...you know...it's good to be informed about the environment.
D: You should take Ecology 101...I am! I thought it would be a fun elective. Maybe we'll have that class together.
J: Ecology 101 isn't an elective course for me. We need to have a few cross-field courses related to business that will also broaden our understanding, so I'll be taking it for sure. Yeah, you're right... it would be great if we had that class together!
D: Yes, who knows, maybe we will both end up working for the same company in the future!

Answers: 1. C 2. A 3. A 4. C 5. C
Explanation:
Question 1: A. This answer is wrong. Jane says directly that she came to the library to take a quiet break. B. This answer is wrong. Again, Jane has already stated that she's in the library. C. This is the right answer. Jane states it clearly at the beginning of the conversation.
Question 2: A. This answer is correct. He states it clearly after Jane asks him what courses he's taking. B. This answer is wrong. Psychiatry sounds very similar to Psychology so it is easy to get the two confused. C.This answer is wrong. Dave states that the Psychology field is actually a "science," however, Science not the actual course of study he said he's taking.
Question 3: A. This answer is correct. Dave told Jane that he remembers her always being creative in high school, which indicates that he knew her already. B. This answer is wrong. He indicated he knew her before. C. This answer is incorrect. He mentioned the two of them in high school, indicating they knew each other.
Question 4: A. This answer is wrong. He mentioned he could get work in government, however, the term "government" was not related to "political" work. B. This is an incorrect answer. shape Set 2

Listen to a conversation between two students.
TOEFL Listening Practice - Conversation 2 - Audio
Gary: Hey, Anna, what are you up to?
Anna: Oh, hi there, Gary. I didn't see you. I was busy finishing up this project for our Business class.
G: You know, the job fair starts next week. Do you think you'll be going?
A: Well, I'm not really sure.... Ahh... I'll probably be working for my dad this summer.
G: Oh, that's good. What kind of work is it?
A: My dad has a coffee shop and business has been up lately – he's already asked me if I'd like to help him out for the summer.
G: Oh wow, that's great.... You're lucky you've found work.
A: Yeah...but, it's not really my first choice...you know, making coffee and waiting on customers...and all that.
G: I know what you mean, but at least you've found something. You're not really interested in making coffee?
A: Oh, no, not really. I'd rather be working in a nice office where I can wear nice clothes... maybe in a law firm working for attorneys or something. I can type 70 words a minute and I'm good on the phone.
G: That sounds more interesting...yeah. But it seems a shame not to help your dad out. I haven't been as lucky as you...um...I've been looking for a job for weeks and still haven't found anything.
A: Hmm...
G: What would your dad think if you worked at a law firm and not for him?
A: I'm not sure, really. He's always been very supportive in my decisions. He always tells me that I should follow my own path. I'm really interested in taking a few business classes and maybe pursuing a law degree after that...but, I don't know yet. (pause)
G: Hey, our family lawyer was looking for the receptionist the other day. I could ask him if he still needs to hire someone... if you're interested, that is. His name is Brent Morgan...Esquire. It would be great if you could get your feet wet first – work in a law firm for a while, you know... to see if you like the atmosphere. The firm practices mainly Corporate and Real Estate law.
A: Oh wow, that would be great! I've been thinking of taking up a few pre-law classes in the next fall... but I'll need to check with my dad... umm... That gives me an idea!
G: What's that?
A: If I get the receptionist job at the law firm, you can take my place at the coffee shop, helping out my dad. That way, we'll both have jobs for the summer.
G: Yeah, that would be great! It sounds like a very good idea. Let's see... Give me a few days to arrange an interview with Mr. Morgan's manager at the law firm.
A: OK, sure. I'll talk to my dad tonight to see if it's all right with him if you take my place. I'm sure he'll have no problem with it. He was going to pay me a salary just as he would for a regular employee anyway. Do you think you can handle the job? He might need some heavy lifting with crates and things... you know. (Chuckles) I've actually gotten in shape from helping him out in the past!
G: Of course I can handle the job. Great! I'll get a good workout too and it's better than having to know accounting or something like that. I can lift a crate of beer – which is around 40 pounds or so. I worked in a beer factory last summer and we moved and loaded heavy crates of beer all day long. We used to call it "the Sweat Shop." Thanks for your help, Anna, I really appreciate it.
A: Thanks for your help too, Gary. If I get this receptionist job, it will give me the experience I need and maybe I can work there every summer... maybe even get a summer clerk internship after I graduate law school...(laughs).
G: You're joking, but you shouldn’t take it so lightly. That sounds like a good plan, actually. You'll be getting work experience and it will give you job security for the future.
A: You're right. Well... I suppose I better head back home now. It's getting late.
G: OK. I'll see you tomorrow. Don't forget we have a Business class together first thing in the morning.
A: Oh yeah...right, I almost forgot. I'll see you then. Bye, Gary!
G: Bye, Anna!

Making coffee is mentioned as part of the job, not buying coffee. C. This answer is wrong. Gary says that heavy lifting is better than having to know to account.

shape Set 3

Listen to a Conversation between a male and female student .
Female student: Hi Alex
Male student: Hi Alicia, how are you today?
Female student: I am fine thank you. Do you have some spare time? I need some advice on the choice to make for my final year project.
Male student: Oh, you have gotten to that stage where you need to decide whether to write a thesis or undertake an industrial training job right?
Female student: Yes Alex, that is indeed my problem and that is why I am here to see you.
Male student: I remember having this same problem last year when I had to decide if to write a thesis or to undertake four months IT job and write a report on it afterward. Well, the choice to make is exclusively yours and you should make that choice based on your strong qualities.
Female student: How do you mean?
Male student: It depends on what you like doing and if you an introvert or extrovert; one who likes staying indoors to study or one who is outgoing and likes to meet people a lot and make new friends. Generally, people who like staying indoors to study would find writing a thesis the better option while the outgoing type would prefer taking an IT job.
Female student: Oh, now I see what you mean.
Male student: Using myself as an example, I am kind of like a social bug who likes to go out, have a good time and meet new people, so the choice should have been easier for me at the time. But I was told by friends and graduates of this school from my department that writing a thesis is straightforward, less stressful and could guarantee you better scores. I was also told that it could be difficult to get an industrial training job that would be of benefit to my course of study. All of these were valid arguments that sort of swayed me in my decision.
Female student: So how did you come about your final decision?
Male student: What I did well in advance was to search for industrial training jobs around my local area that would be beneficial in my course of study. This is was you should also do first. Thankfully, I did find lots of available jobs to choose from. But still, I considered just settling down to write a dissertation and be done with it in record time. But the social bug in me won out and I decided to take an industrial training job placement. Today, I am glad I did because it has given me a solid foundation for starting my career in business administration.
Female student: Oh really, it is worth considering an industrial training job placement then?
Male student: My advice to you Alicia is that you should leave all your options open. If you are a social person like me, you should start looking for placement positions in your local area now. But do not rule out writing a dissertation. What you can do now is prioritize. You have two options and based on your personality, one should be more acceptable to you. If your preferred option does not suit you at the time of making a final decision, then you can take the second option. So, take your time and explore both options very well before making a final decision.
Female student: Ok I see what you mean. But if I have to write a dissertation, what do I need to do at the initial stage to prepare.
Male student: Well you may not need to do much initially. Just have a few dissertation topics you would like to write on and have a preferred supervisor for your work in mind. If and when you decide you want to write a dissertation, you can then inform the business school office of your decision and let them know who your preferred supervisor is.
Female student: Thank you very much Alex. This conversation with you was well worth it.
Male student: You are welcome Alicia.
1. What was the main reason for the conversation? A. The female student needed some advice on the best IT job to undertake for her final year project. B. The female student needed some advice on a choice between writing a thesis and undertaking an IT job. C. The female student needed some advice on taking a part-time summer job. D. The female student was in need of a mentor.
2. Which option would suit people who like to stay indoors and study? A. Writing a thesis. B. Completing a class assignment. C. Taking an IT job and writing a report at the end. D. Both options.
3. Why did the male speaker eventually decide to take an IT job in his time? A. He is a reserved person who prefers staying indoors so he decided to do something different. B. He loves to read hard and study all by himself. C. He is a social person who likes to go out, explore and make new friends. D. He hated the idea of writing a thesis.
4. What was the eventual advice the male student gave to the female student on the issue? A. He told her to by all means take the IT placement. Because he knew for sure that she was a social person. B. He told her to write a thesis as this was the best option for an introvert that she is. C. He told her to seek the help of a Professor as he could not help her out. D. He told her to keep both options open even if she preferred one and take her time before she eventually makes her choice.
5. What was the school faculty responsible forgiven their students the choice of these two final year project options? A. School of Engineering. B. Business school. C. Project school. D. Law school
Answers: 1. B 2. A 3. C 4. D 5. B
Explanation:
Question 1: This question is a mainstay of listening conversations and is mostly used to test if the listener is attentive from the beginning of the conversation. This is because in most listening conversations, the reason for the conversation is most likely found at the beginning of the conversation, mentioned by either or both speakers. This case is not an exception. We can see that the female speaker did mention that she wanted advice on a choice to make for her final year project, the male speaker made the reason clearer by asking, “Oh, you have gotten to that stage where you need to decide whether to write a thesis or undertake an industrial training job right?” The female speaker confirmed this by answering in the affirmative. This is the main reason for the conversation.
A. There were two options that the female speaker needed to choose from, an IT job placement or writing a thesis. She was not looking to find out the best IT job to take just yet but to make a choice between these two options. This option is wrong. B. This was the main reason for the conversation and it also formed the main topic of discussion. C. The female student did not seek advice on taking a part-time job as this was not mentioned during the conversation. This answer is wrong. D. This was no mentorship problem and the female speaker did not seek a mentor. This answer is wrong.
Question 2: There are two options for the final year project and each option may likely suit different kinds of people. The male speaker explained that the personality of an individual goes a long way in helping to decide which option to take. This can be seen in this statement he made during the conversation, “Generally, people who like staying indoors to study would find writing a thesis the better option while the outgoing type would prefer taking an IT job.” So writing a thesis is the correct answer to this question.
A. This is the correct answer to the question as mentioned by the male speaker during the conversation. B. This was not one of the options available to the female student to choose from. So this is the wrong answer. C. This option according to the male speaker would suit an outgoing types of people not indoor kinds of people. This answer is wrong. D. This is the wrong answer as indoor-type people would generally prefer writing a thesis.
Question 3:
According to the male speaker, making a decision on the two options offered boils down to one’s personality; whether you are an introvert or an extrovert. That is one who likes keeping to himself or one who is very social and likes meeting people. He went on to say that, when he was faced with making this decision, what finally made him take an industrial training placement was his social nature. This can be observed when he said, “But the social bug in me won out and I decided to take an industrial training job placement.” This statement means his social nature won out, so he took the IT job placement. A. The male speaker actually mentioned that he was the outgoing type and this helped him make the decision to take an IT job. He never said he was the reserved type. This answer is wrong. B. This option like option (A) also insinuates that the male speaker is an indoor type which is wrong. This makes this the wrong answer. C. This is the exact definition of an outgoing person or extrovert which is the correct personality description of the male student that made him decide to take an IT job. This is the correct answer. D. There was no mention of the speaker hating the idea of writing a thesis. He actually considered writing a thesis on the advice of his friends but finally decide to take the IT job. This answer is also wrong.
Question 4:
As the conversation drew to a close, the male student advised the female student not to decide too early on any option but to keep both options open even if she preferred one of the options. The reason for this was that if one failed, she could always fall back to the other one. He did not tell her to pick any option from the two immediately or to discard any of them and he was careful not to give her a preferred option. The answer to this question should be; to keep both options open even if she preferred one of them and take her time in coming to a final decision. A. This option is wrong because the male speaker was careful not to give her a clear choice from both options. He told her to consider both options even if she had a preferred choice. B. Again the male speaker did not give her a clear choice and he did not know or ask about her kind of personality. This is the wrong answer. C. The male speaker did not refer her to a professor for help. This is the wrong answer. D. This is the correct answer according to the explanation above.
Question 5:
This question seems to be easy to answer but only if you follow the conversation closely without missing little details. It is a tricky question with the answer not very easy to spot. During the conversation, we will observe that the male student mentioned that taking an IT job enabled him to start his career in business administration which gives us a hint about his course and school faculty. Also, at the end of the conversation, the male student advised the female student to inform the business school of her choice of supervisor if she decides to write a thesis. This is a clear indication that the business school was the school faculty responsible for forgiven their students both options to choose from for their final year project. An only correct answer is an option (B).

shape Set 4

Listen to a Conversation between a male student and a female university librarian.
Male student: Hello, good morning
Female Librarian: Good morning, how can I help you today?
Male student: Please could you let me through the barricade. I am a new student and this is my first time in the library.
Female Librarian: Oh ok then. Have you registered for the current school year in the bursary building?
Male student: Yes I have
Female Librarian: Then your student identity card has been issued to you. Do you have your student ID here with you?
Male student: Yes I do, just a minute (searches inside his cross bag). Here it is.
Female Librarian: Ok, approach the barricade and swipe your student ID across the right barricade sensor. When you hear a clicking sound, push through the barricade in front of you and you can come through to the front desk.
Male student: (Follows the instructions, successfully passes through the barricade and sits in front of the librarian).
Female Librarian: I take it this is your first time at this school?
Male student: Yes, I have come in to study Petroleum Engineering at Masters Degree level.
Female Librarian: Welcome to the University of Buckingham. I am sure you would like to familiarize yourself with the library facilities?
Male student: Yes, that is actually why I am here today.
Female Librarian: I would need to give you some basic orientation and layout of the library and then take you round to show you the various sections of the library. But first off, can I have your student ID number shown on your student ID card?
Male student: Sure, it is BK42149ENG.
Female Librarian: (Typing on the computer) just a minute, let me confirm your details on my computer. I see you are an international student by the name Paul Gozo.
Male student: Yes, that is correct.
Female Librarian: Ok Paul, this is the John Harris Library, named after a renowned English scholar in the 18th century. The library has two floors and is divided into different sections. The ground floor houses the cafeteria, a general area, a computer room, a research postgraduate study room, and three private group-study rooms. On the first floor, you have a quiet study area secluded from a separate general study area with computer systems. The second floor also has a quiet study area, two separate computer rooms, and 12 private group-study rooms. The first and second floors also houses bookshelves that display all the books contained in this library.
Male student: Interesting, I think I am going to like studying here. Female Librarian: I guarantee you will. Each floor of the library also has different facilities which I will show when I take you on a short tour in a minute. But let me brief you of some of the ground rules here. Each private group-study room is available by booking only.
Male student: Booking? Please can you clarify? Female Librarian: That means, you must have registered to use the room here at the front desk at least a day before you will use such a room. If it is available, you will be assigned the room for a maximum of 2 hours at a stretch.
Male student: Hmm…that’s very well organized. Any other thing I should know before you show me around.
Female Librarian: Yes, a few more ground rules if you don’t mind. The ground floor is the only floor you are allowed to eat and no hot food is allowed. All our trash cans are separate and present on each floor, so you should sort out your trash and dispose of it in the correct trash can allocated. You should always observe the no noise rule, especially in the quiet zones. These are some of the most important ground rules I can remember at the moment. A list of all the ground rules has been printed and pasted in designated areas around the library. Male student: Thank you very much for this little orientation, it was very well thought out. Female Librarian: You are welcome Paul. Now let me show you around the library.
1. What was the students’ reason for visiting the library? A. To tell him that she obtained her VISA late B. To notify him that she arrived late for the school year. C. To let him know that she is taking philosophy 101 D. To make him aware of her international student status.
2. Why did the student not defer her admission to the next school year? A. She is an international student and so cannot defer her admission. B. She preferred to arrive late for the school year. C. She had been issued an apology by the school for getting her admission late. D. She had a dream to study at the university and could not pass up the opportunity when it came.
3. According to the Professor, Magdalene has missed ______ out of _____ of his lectures already A. 4 out of 10 B. 3 out of 12 C. 3 out of 10 D. 5 out of 12
4. What did the Professor advise the student to do as regards her studies? A. To take out extra time to study B. To join a study group as quickly as possible C. To submit her assignment as soon as possible D. To take philosophy 101 seriously as it is a difficult course.
5. What does the professor mean when he says this – “So you have your work cut out for you.” A. He has cut out the students’ work for her. B. He has explained the student’s work to her. C. The student has made her work easier D. That the student has a difficult task of catching up on her studies
Answers: 1. B 2. D 3. C 4. A 5. D
Explanation:
Question 1: This is definitely one of the most common questions in a listening exercise. Often times, you can get the reason for a conversation directly from the conversation. This case is not different. The female student actually states the reason for visiting the Professor in this statement, “That’s the reason why I am here Professor. I have not attended any of your lectures this term as I have just resumed.” Any option that clearly represents was she meant by this statement is the correct answer.
A. This is close but not the main reason for her visit. She actually obtained her VISA late but that is not the main reason for visiting the professor. B. This is exactly the main reason why she went to see him, so it is the correct answer. C. This is definitely not the reason for her visit because the Professor should normally be aware of how many students are taking his course and she does not need to see him to inform him of this. This is the wrong answer D. Again this is not the main reason for her visit. In the course of the conversation, she did mention that she was an international student to explain the reason why she resumed late for the school year. This is the wrong answer.
Question 2: This question is quite tricky because the student did not state clearly why she did not defer her admission. But the answer to this question can be obtained from a part of the discussion. The Professor made a leading statement after this question during the discussion when he said this, “Hmm, you should have considered deferring your admission till the next school year.” This should alert us that she might make a statement about his comment in her next comment which she did. In reply, the student said, “It has been my dream to study at Chesterfield University since I was a kid and I just couldn’t pass up this opportunity up. This statement is the only connecting statement to the Professor’s comment and should be the correct answer.
A. There was no mention of restriction to deferring of admission for international students throughout the discussion, so this is the wrong option. B. She arrived late because she was issued admission late by the school for some reason not mentioned. She did not prefer to arrive late. This option is wrong. C. There was no mention anywhere during the conversation that she was issued an apology by the school. This option is also wrong. D. This is the correct answer because it tallies with the students’ comments as explained.
Question 3:
This kind of question to fill in blank spaces requires direct information from the conversation. It tests your ability to listen and store little details which could be required later. Numbers, prices, addresses, number plates, etc. when mentioned in listening exercises are usually required in some of the questions that follow, so we should always take note of these. In this case, the answer to this question lies in this statement made by the Professor, “In addition, you have missed three of my lectures already and I prepare ten lectures for the academic year.” We can see that the only option that tallies with this statement is the option (C) which is the correct answer.
Question 4:
The answer to this question can also be found directly in a statement the Professor made when he said, “What you can do is take some extra time to study as you are well behind in all the courses you have taken for this year.” Any option that reflects this statement is the correct option.
A. This is the correct answer as reflected in the Professor’s statement above. B. The Professor did not advise her to join a study group at any time during the conversation. The only mention of a study group was that of her class for the next assessment. This is the wrong answer. C. This is not the correct answer as the Professor never asked the student to submit her assignment at any time during the conversation. D. This is the correct answer according to the explanation above.
Question 5:
This statement by the Professor is an idiomatic phrase that means the student has a difficult task to accomplish. In getting the full meaning of the statement by the Professor, we will have to examine the previous statement made by the Professor when he said, “In addition, you have missed three of my lectures already and I prepare ten lectures for the academic year.” The Professor was thus referring to her academic studies when he said she had a difficult task ahead of her.
A. This statement just explains the sentence in plain context and does not explain the meaning of the idiomatic phrase. The Professor did not cut out or give the student any work to do. It is the wrong answer. B. Again the idiomatic meaning of the statement has not been explained. The Professor did not explain any work for the student to accomplish. C. The student has no immediate work to carry out, so this answer is also wrong. D. This is the correct answer as explained above.

shape Set 5

Listen to a Conversation between a Professior and student .
Student: Good morning Professor
Professor: Good morning young lady.
Student: I am one of your first-year students for the school year.
Professor: Really? I have a small class and I can’t say your face looks familiar.
Student: That’s the reason why I am here Professor. I have not attended any of your lectures this term as I have just resumed.
Professor: How come? School resumed four weeks ago and I must tell you that I have taken my first assessment already.
Student: Err Professor, I got my admission quite late, just three weeks ago in fact and as an international student, I need a VISA to come and study here. It has taken a few weeks to obtain my VISA which is the reason I arrived this late.
Professor: Hmm, you should have considered deferring your admission till the next school year. As it is now, you have missed quite a lot and as a matter of principle, I do not give students any reassessment if they miss one. In addition, you have missed three of my lectures already and I prepare ten lectures for the academic year. So, you have your work cut out for you.
Student: I knew philosophy 101 would be a tough course but missing out on a chunk of lectures just made it all the more difficult. It has been my dream to study at Chesterfield University since I was a kid and I just couldn’t pass up this opportunity.
Professor: I think I understand your sentiments. What you can do is take some extra time to study as you are well behind in all the courses you have taken for this year. On my part, I will increase the score margin for your next assessment to make up for the first one. How does that sound?
Student: Oh thank you very much, Professor, that sounds fantastic.
Professor: It was good you came to see me today about this issue because it would have affected your academic performance. As it is now, you need to study twice as hard as your classmates to get up to speed. Anything else I can do for you today young lady?
Student: Yes Professor, I learned from my classmates that you have put everyone in study groups for the next assessment. If it is not too much to ask, please can you place me in a group so I can familiarize myself with my group members as soon as possible? Professor: Oh yes that escaped me, err…you do have my class tomorrow by 11 am right?
Student: Yes Professor
Professor: Ok, I will place you in a group tomorrow then. Be sure not to miss tomorrow’s class; you have missed quite a lot as it is.
Student: Oh yes Professor, I will be there early and thank you again.
Professor: You are welcome to miss???
Student: Magdalene, my name is Magdalene Professor.
Professor: Ok Magdalene, I hope I have been able to assist you today?
Student: Yes Professor
Professor: All right then, off you go. I have quite a lot on my table this morning.
1. Why did the student visit the Professor? A. To tell him that she obtained her VISA late B. To notify him that she arrived late for the school year. C. To let him know that she is taking philosophy 101 D. To make him aware of her international student status.
2. Why does the student say this? – “Interesting, I think I am going to like studying here.”
A. The library is user friendly with a lot of books B. He is impressed with the layout of the library and feels it will live up to his expectations. C. His friends have told him that the library is a good study area. D. The librarian has played him a video which shows him all the library facilities.
3. What is the student’s Identity card number? A. BK41249ENG B. BK 42194ENG C. BK 42149ENL D. BK42149ENG
4. Which of these is not a ground rule given by the librarian? A. Group study rooms are available by booking only. B. Always observe the no noise rule. C. No eating on the first and second floors of the library. D. No borrowing of books on weekends.
5. Click this link to listen again to part of the conversation. Then answer the question. Why does the librarian says this? “A list of all the ground rules have been printed and pasted in designated areas around the library.” A. She has mentioned the most important ground rules and wants him to look up the rest in areas where there have been pasted around the library. B. She did not mention any ground rules and refers him to look them up where they have been pasted in designated areas around the library. C. She has commanded him to make sure he looks at all the ground rules pasted in designated areas around the library. D. She is begging him to look up all the ground rules pasted in designated areas around the library for his own good.
Answers: 1. A 2. B 3. D 4. D 5. A
Explanation:
Question 1: This kind of question about the reason for the conversation can usually be answered by listening to the first few statements of the conversation. But in this case, the student and the librarian engage in a little discussion that does not immediately tell us the reason for his visit to the library. This is a special case that seeks to distract a candidate from the main reason why the student is visiting the library. As you can observe during the initial part of the conversation, the reason for the student’s visit was actually mentioned first by the librarian when she said this, “Welcome to the University of Buckingham. I am sure you would like to familiarize yourself with the library facilities?” The student answering in the affirmative confirms this.
A. This is the correct answer as affirmed by the student when he answered the librarians’ question by saying, “Yes, that is actually why I am here today.” B. Even though the library is a place to borrow books, this is not the reason for the students’ visit at this time. This answer is wrong. C. This answer is quite tricky because the student actually discusses with the librarian about the library facilities. But it is an incomplete answer because he actually wants to familiarize himself with the library facilities not just discuss about them with the librarian. So it is the wrong answer. D. This is the wrong answer because even though looking around the library makes him familiar with the library, the student does not visit the library to obtain any lecture notes.
Question 2: This is an inference question that requires you to decipher the students’ reason for making a comment. The answer to such a question can usually be found in statements preceding this statement in question or in some cases after the statement. If you follow this conversation closely, you will find out that the librarian has just finished describing the layout of the library which has made a positive impression on the student. Hence, the student is impressed by what the librarian has just said about the library.
A. Although the student is impressed with the layout of the library as outlined by the librarian, there is no mention of user-friendly facilities or an estimation of the number of books the library contains. This is the wrong answer. B. This option gives the best explanation of why the student would make this comment just after the librarian has given him the layout of the library. C. There is no mention of what his friends may have told him about the library, so this option does not give a correct explanation of the reason the student made the comment. D. This option is wrong because the librarian has not played him a video but mentioned the layout of the library.
Question 3:
This question is a question that highlights the importance of listening exercises. They are made to test your ability to listen and understand English Language conversions, but most especially your ability to store little details. You are required to take notes as you listen to conversations and it is advisable to jot down little details as the conversation progresses, especially figures that include; addresses, social security numbers, car plate numbers, prices of goods and/or services etc. In this case, the students’ ID card number was mentioned and your ability to write it down correctly as it is mentioned ensures that you get the answer to this question correctly. The ID number as mentioned in this conversion was BK42149ENG. The correct answer is option (D).
Question 4:
this is an elimination type question in which all but one of the options conform with what was mentioned during this conversation in relation to the question being asked. From the conversation, the librarian has mentioned different ground rules observed in the library and your ability to remember all the ground rules mentioned is the key to answering this question. This is another type of question that highlights the importance of taking notes while a conversation is being played. All but option (D) were ground rules mentioned by the librarian, so option (D) is the correct answer.
Question 5:
This kind of question about the reason why a statement was made during the conversation is quite tricky to answer but the key lies in listening to statements made before or after the statement in question was made. In this case, the librarian has just finished mentioning some of the most important ground rules as can be confirmed by this statement, “These are some of the most important ground rules I can remember at the moment.” This infers that she is referring him to look up the rest of the ground rules she may not have mentioned in designated areas where they have been pasted around the library. Option (A) best captures the reason for this statement and is the correct answer. A. This is the correct answer as explained above. B. This is the wrong answer because the first part of the answer is in direct contrast to what the librarian did during the conversation. C. The librarian has not compelled or commanded the student to look up all the ground rules but just referred him to designated areas around the library where he may find them. This is the wrong option. D. The librarian has not begged the student to look up all the ground rules for any reason. This is also the wrong answer.

shape Set 6

Listen to a Conversation Professor and his assistant .
Professor: Hello Mathew, how are you today? Assistant: I am fine thank you. Did you send it for me Professor? Professor: Yes I did. I noticed you were not in school yesterday, what happened?
Assistant: Ah yes Professor, I visited my parents whom I have not seen for quite a while at the weekend. I was supposed to be home by Sunday night but couldn’t make it. I did send you an email to let you know that I would not be in on Monday though.
Professor: Really? I have not checked my work email since last week Friday; I guess I missed your email notification. I hope everyone is ok back home?
Assistant: Yes, my parents are fine, but I had to spend the entire weekend and part of Monday with them to sort out their stuff. They are moving to a house of their own very soon and they needed a helping hand.
Professor: Oh I see. Anyway, I sent for you because I need you to cover for me next week. I am traveling for the international management conference in Berlin this weekend and need you to take some of my business classes for next week.
Assistant: Ok which classes Professor?
Professor: Bus 102 and Bus 303. I feel you can handle those courses comfortably in my absence. The course outline has not changed for Bus 102 but I have tweaked the course outline this year for Bus 303. I will send you the online lecture notes so you can go through them later this week. You will only be taking lecture 2 for bus 102 and lecture 3 for Bus 303.
Assistant: Ok Professor but how come you changed the course outline for Bus 303?
Professor: Well, I found that it was more beneficial to get the student to know the overall principles of marketing and other business ideals and principles related to business before being thrust into the world of business management proper. This will ensure that students appreciate their role better as business managers in supervising crucial aspects of a business such as the marketing and consumer satisfaction models as taught in this school. So this year I have started the course with marketing principles, you can view the new course outline online on the school portal.
Assistant: Hmm, I see what you mean Professor. When we were students, it was quite confusing to be told that as business managers, part of our duties would be to oversee the marketing side of the business without properly addressing marketing and consumer brand aspects of the course. It was more like a case of putting the cart before the horse back then.
Professor: Exactly Mathew that is why it was necessary for me to make this change in the course outline for Bus 303. So you would be teaching them the principles of marketing proper in the next lecture as you would see in my lecture notes. I trust it would be a piece of cake for you as you were my best student of class 2010.
Assistant: That’s flattering Professor. I only try to replicate the good teaching you gave to me when I was your student. Any other thing you would like me to do for you, today Professor?
Professor: Um, that would be all for today Mathew. I would draw up the final details in my lecture notes and send them to you.
1. What was the main reason the Professor sent for the assistant? A. To ask him why he was not in school the previous day. B. To tell the assistant that he would take his classes the following week. C. To let the assistant know that he was traveling soon. D. To ask the assistant how his parents were doing.
2. Why was the assistant absent from school on Monday?
A. He overslept on Sunday night and could not make it to school the next day. B. He decided to take Monday off as it was a public holiday. C. He visited his parents at the weekend and helped them sort out household items for movement until Monday. D. He traveled for a conference at the weekend and could not make it back on time.
3. What did the Professor seek to achieve by tweaking the course outline for Bus 303? A. A better appreciation of business management from the student’s point of view. B. A shorter course outline to reduce the workload of students C. A longer course outline to broaden the student’s knowledge. D. A shorter course outline to reduce the number of classes for the semester.
4. Click this link to listen to part of the conversation again and then answer the question. Why did the assistant say this? – “It was more like a case of putting the cart before the horse back then.” A. Because you can put a cart before a horse as a student. B. Because it was a case of using what you have to get what you want when he was a student. C. Because he felt Bus 303 was taught in the wrong order when he was a student. D. Because when he was a student, Bus 303 was taught in the right order.
5. Click this link to listen to part of the conversation again and then answer the question. What did the Professor mean when he said this? – “I trust it would be a piece of cake for you as you were my best student of class 2010.” A. He gave the assistant a piece of cake as he was his best student in 2010 B. He trusted that the assistant would teach the class easily as he was his best student in 2010. C. He had given the assistant his full trust as he was his best student in 2012. D. He trusted the assistant would not let him down in representing him at the conference.
Answers: 1. B 2. C 3. A 4. D 5. B
Explanation:
Question 1: The reason for a conversation can usually be found at the beginning of a conversation. It may or may not be clearly stated. In this case, the reason for this conversation was clearly stated by the Professor when he said this, “Anyway, I sent for you because I need you to cover for me next week. I am traveling for the international management conference in Berlin this weekend and need you to take some of my business classes for next week.” Thus, the main reason was to inform the assistant that he would be taking his business classes next week.
A. Though the Professor did ask the assistant why he was not in school the previous day, this was not the main reason why he sent for him. This answer is wrong. B. This was the main reason why he sent for the assistant as can be deduced from the conversation. C. This was not the main reason why he sent for the assistant. This was the reason why he would not be able to take his classes for next week, so it is a secondary reason at best. This answer is close but wrong. D. The Professor asked the assistant how his parents were doing as a general way of exchanging pleasantries. This was not the main reason why he sent for the assistant. This answer is also wrong.
Question 2: At the beginning of the conversation, the Professor asked the assistant why he was not in school the previous day and the assistant replied that he went to visit his parents at the weekend and couldn’t make it back. The Professor then pressed on by asking if everyone was alright back home. This was actually the moment the assistant gave the reason why he actually missed school the previous day in this statement, “Yes, my parents are fine but I had to spend the entire weekend and part of Monday with them to sort out their stuff. They are moving to a house of their own very soon and they needed a helping hand.” The assistant helped his parents to sort out their household items until Monday, so they could not make it back to school.
A. The assistant did not mention this as the reason for being absent the previous day. This is a flimsy reason anyway but is the wrong reason. B. It was not mentioned during the conversation that Monday was a public holiday. This answer is wrong. C. This was the reason for his being absent from school on Monday. This is the correct answer. D. During the conversation, the Professor mentioned that he was traveling for a conference, not the student. This answer is also wrong.
Question 3:
As the conversation progressed, the Professor went on to tell the assistant that he would be taking two of his business classes for him the next week, Bus 102 and Bus 303. He then went on to say that he had tweaked or changed the course outline for Bus 303 a little this semester. He gave a reason for this which can be observed in this statement, “This will ensure that students appreciate their role better as business managers in supervising crucial aspects of a business such as the marketing and consumer satisfaction models as taught in this school.” So by tweaking the course a little, the students will appreciate the course better which is what the Professor sought to achieve. A. This is what the Professor sought to achieve by tweaking the course as explained above. B. The Professor did not mention if the course outline would be reduced as a result of the change, so this cannot be taken into consideration. This answer is wrong. C. The Professor did not also say that the course outline would become longer to broaden students’ knowledge. This answer is wrong. D. This answer is also wrong.
Question 4:
The reasons for certain statements made during listening conversations are best deduced in the context to which that statement was made. This means certain statements are best explained with the help of previous or later statements. In this case the assistant was referring to the former course outline of Bus 303 in which they were taught the duties of business managers in supervising certain processes as applied to a business without first being taught what those processes entailed. The statement in question has an idiomatic phrase, “putting the cart before the horse,” which means to do things in the wrong order. So the student was referring to being taught in the wrong order with the former course outline of Bus 303 when he was a student which the Professor had now changed. A. This option does not explain the sentence properly as the idiomatic phrase contained is not correctly explained. This answer is wrong. B. This option explains the statement out of context so it is the wrong answer. C. This option explains the statement correctly and completely which makes it the correct answer. D. This option gives the opposite explanation of the statement and is thus the wrong answer.
Question 5:
This statement was made towards the end of the lecture and the previous statement shed some light on what the Professor meant by it. The previous statement was, “So you would be teaching them the principles of marketing proper in the next lecture as you would see in my lecture notes.” The professor was telling the student what topic he would be teaching in the next lecture for Bus 303 with this statement and went on to say, “I trust it would be a piece of cake for you as you were my best student of class 2010.” This statement has an idiomatic phrase, “a piece of cake” which means something easy to do. Hence the Professor put his full trust in the student to easily teach his class while he is away. A. This answer is wrong as the statement does not mean giving the student a piece of cake. This idiomatic phrase has not been explained properly. B. This is the proper meaning of the sentence in the context to which it was used during the conversation. The idiomatic phrase was also correctly explained. This is the correct answer. C. This answer is close but wrong. He had given the assistant his full trust to do what? Also, the assistant was his best student in 2010 according to the statement, not 2012. D. The assistant was not representing the Professor at the conference but helping him to teach his class while he was away.

shape Set 7

Conversation between 2 male students.
Male student 1: Hello Cini
Male student 2: Oh hi Henry, how are you doing today?
Male student 1: I am doing great, you?
Male student 2: I am fine thank you. It seems you are in a hurry, are you going somewhere?
Male student 1: No not really, I just want to get home to pack up some of my stuff. I am due to spend the holiday with my family in Ibiza.
Male student 2: Wow, lucky you. I get to work this summer to raise some money for myself next semester. So I am staying put all through the holidays.
Male student 1: Oh, that’s a shame. Where would you be working during the summer holidays?
Male student 2: I have not gotten a place yet but I have sent applications to some companies that are looking to recruit short term in the summer.
Male student 1: Ok, I guess your resume is in good shape then?
Male student 2: Yes, I was able to draw up a CV some weeks back which is what I have used. Do you have a minute? I just want some advice on how to be successful in a job interview. Joel told me you did a summer job last year and you could help me. He also said I could find you here in the library.
Male student 1: Yes, Joel is right. So what do you want to know?
Male student 2: Well, since I have not been to a job interview before, I want to know all you can tell me about attending a job interview generally.
Male student 1: Hmm, okay, I will try my best to summarise all you need to know to be successful in a job interview. First of all, you need to know all about the company that has invited you for an interview. Their complete history, such as what they do and how they do it; when the company started; the name of their CEO; working hours for staff etc. You could do a search on the internet and get all the information you need as most companies now have an online presence. You will always find enough information about a company which will be useful in an interview.
Male student 2: Ah, that’s the first task then. Tell me more.
Male student 1: You need to be conversant with some common questions that are most likely asked in interviews. Questions such as, why do you want to work with us? What inspires you? Have you done this sort of job before? It is good to prepare yourself for all these types of questions even though you feel you know the answers and can answer them in a heartbeat. But preparing a good and precise answer beforehand ensures that you make an impression on your interviewer. You also need to be conversant with all the details on your CV such as details of work you have done in the past, special skills acquired and professional certificates acquired with dates.
Male student 2: Oh I see. When going for the interview, do I need to wear casual clothes?
Male student 1: Aha, before I forget, let me intimate you on some general interview etiquette. You need to dress smart no matter the kind of company you are going to attend their interview. Smart-casual or smart-corporate dressing but I think because it is a temporary summer job, smart-casual will do. You should be at the venue at least 30 minutes before the time of interview so you can familiarise yourself with the environment and settle down properly. You also need to be polite during and after the interview. For instance, you should knock before entering the interview room, greet the person or people going to interview you and always ask to sit or be offered a sit before sitting down for the interview.
Male student 2: Hmm, thanks for the tips, Henry. I think I should be able to do well in an interview by following the tips you just gave me.
Male student 1: Err… finally, Cini, because it is a summer job you are going for and not a permanent job, vacancies may abound in the hospitality, food processing and warehousing, superstore, and mail sectors. Treat every interview and subsequent job seriously, no matter the sector you find yourself. You never know, you may be offered a position every summer you are in school up until you finish school and can even be offered a permanent position.
Male student 2: Thanks Henry, I will keep that in mind.
1.What is the main topic of discussion? A. How to get a job in record time. B. Tips on how to write a good CV. C. How to become a good professional. D. Tips on how to be successful in a job interview.
2. What is the first thing you need to do when preparing for an interview?
A. Print your CV and cover letter. B. Write a list of items you need to buy. C. Do some research about the company that has invited you for an interview. D. Select smart clothes you need to wear.
3. Why do you need to be conversant with some questions commonly asked in interviews? A. This ensures that you know all the questions you will be asked during the interview. B. So you have a good and ready answer beforehand which makes an impression on the interviewer. C. It enables you to be alert all through the interview. D. The interviewer will not be able to come up with questions that you do not know the answer to.
4. What was the reason for the final advice given to Cini during the conversation? A. That he could one day become the manager of the company. B. That he could get tips everyday during the job. C. That he could get other jobs from the same company and even get a permanent position when he finished schooling. D. That he could become the employee of the month and get rewarded.
5. Click to listen to part of the conversation again and then answer the question. What does the speaker mean when he says this? – “It is good to prepare yourself for all these types of questions even though you feel you know the answers and can answer them in a heartbeat.” A. It is good practice to prepare for questions commonly asked in interviews beforehand even though you can answer them almost immediately. B. Always prepare for exam questions well beforehand even though you can answer them almost immediately. C. Prepare answers to any questions well beforehand even though you already know the answer. D. Prepare answers for questions before you go for an audition.
Answers: 1. D 2. C 3. B 4. C 5. A
Explanation:
Question 1: The main topic question is almost always asked in listening exercises to get the candidates understanding of the essence of the conversation. If we follow the conversation closely and attentively, we can obtain the main idea or topic of the conversation. In this conversation, both students were discussing on how to be successful in a job interview. One of the students went to the other for advice and tips on how to prepare for an interview. So this became the main topic of discussion between the two students and can be seen in this leading statement by one of the speakers, “Hmm, okay, I will try my best to summarise all you need to know to be successful in a job interview.”
A. This option is quite catchy but wrong. Both students discussed how to be successful in a job interview. This is not the same thing as getting a job in record time. B. This option is also not correct as both students did not discuss tips on how to write a good CV. C. This option is also not the correct answer. They did not discuss how to become a good professional. D. This is the correct option as obtained from the conversation.
Question 2: The answer to this question can be obtained from a part of the interview. The first speaker said this, “First of all, you need to know all about the company that has invited you for an interview.” This is exactly the first thing you need to do when preparing for an interview according to the speaker.
A. Although this is part of what you should take to an interview, this is not the first thing you need to do when preparing for an interview, according to the speaker. This is the wrong answer. B. Writing a list of items to buy is not the first thing to do when preparing for an interview and this was not even mentioned during the conversation. This answer is also wrong. C. As obtained from the conversation, this is the first thing you need to do when preparing for an interview. This is the correct answer. D. Selecting clothes to wear is not the first thing to do when preparing for an interview. This was not also mentioned during the conversation. This answer is also wrong.
Question 3:
As the conversation progressed, the first speaker went on to intimate the second speaker on some questions he needs to be familiar with that are normally asked at interviews. He also gave a reason for this when he said, “But preparing a good and precise answer beforehand ensures that you make an impression on your interviewer.” This means you need to know these questions and have ready answers before you go for the interview so you can make a good impression on the interviewer by being precise. A. The speaker did not insinuate that these questions will surely be asked in an interview and he has no way of knowing for sure that they will be asked. This makes this option the wrong answer. B. This is the reason why you need to know some of these questions beforehand. This is the correct answer. C. Knowing the questions and their answer does not ensure you are alert all through the interview. This answer is wrong. D. The speaker did not come up with numerous questions that can be asked during an interview and cannot know all the questions that would be asked. This option is also the wrong answer.
Question 4:
This question is a tricky one because it seeks to obtain the reason for an advice given during the conversation but it does not highlight the particular advice. It is a test of how attentive a listener was all through the lecture. The first speaker gave a final advice to the second speaker named Cini as obtained from the conversation. That advice can be captured in this statement, “Treat every interview and subsequent job seriously, no matter the sector you find yourself.” He then went on to give a reason for this advice as can be captured in this statement, “You never know, you may be offered a position every summer you are in school up until you finish school and can even be offered a permanent position.” This is the reason for this advice given in the final stages of the conversation. A. The first speaker was not specific and never mentioned that the second speaker could one day become the manager of the company. This is the wrong answer. B. There was no mentioned of anyone receiving tips on the job during the conversation. This answer is also wrong. C. This is the reason for the last advice given to Cini an obtained from the conversation. D. The first speaker was also not specific in saying the second speaker could become employee of the month. This was not mentioned during the conversation. This answer is also wrong.
Question 5:
Looking at this statement, we find that there is an idiomatic phrase attached to the end of the statement, “in a heartbeat.” This means very quickly or almost immediately. Analysing the first part of the sentence which reads, “It is good to prepare yourself for all these types of questions even though you feel you know the answers and can answer them,” we see that the first speaker was talking about answering some questions. What questions? This leads us to a previous statement when the first speaker said, “You need to be conversant with some common questions that are most likely asked in interviews.” So he was talking about common questions asked during interviews. So the first speaker meant that even though the second speaker could answer some questions commonly asked in interviews almost immediately, it was good practice to prepare for them beforehand. A. This is the correct interpretation of the sentence and the idiomatic phrase at the end. B. The second speaker was not preparing for an exam, so this makes the interpretation of the sentence wrong, even though the idiomatic phrase was correctly interpreted. C. This is an incomplete interpretation of the sentence. What question is the sentence talking about? This option did not address that, so this is the wrong answer. D. The second speaker was not preparing for an audition, so this makes this option wrong.
