Institute of Banking Personnel Selection, founded in 1975, was started as Personnel Selection Services (PSS). In 1984, it became an independent entity at the behest of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Public Sector Banks.

A Common Written Examination (CWE) was launched by Institute of Banking Personnel Selection in 2011 for the recruitment of clerks and officers in Indian nationalized and regional rural banks.CWE is thus mandatory for all the candidates interested in the various posts offered by IBPS. Interested candidates are required to submit an online application on the Official website of IBPS and then appear for the online objective exams (Prelims and Mains). Only those candidates who pass the prelims are invited to write the mains examinations.
