Study in chunks and not in bulk: The attention span for a student is close to 25 minutes. But, what is attention span and how to calculate it?
The time between the start of your studies and the first distraction is called the attention span. In other words, the duration for which you can be glued to your textbook with full attention is called as attention span.
Knowing your attention span is simple. Start with the book and set it on the timer. The first time when you get distracted, switch off the timer. The duration of the timer is your attention span.
Studying in chunks as per your attention span must be alternated with a 5-minute break. Grasping power is increased using this method. Moreover, this needs to be repeated three times, followed by taking a break of about 30 minutes.
Don’t forget to recite what is read: Reading a newspaper doesn’t mean you are remembering what you are reading. Reading can be just seeing the texts in one go, but does it assure you about memorizing what you study?
Reciting is also a very important part of your studies. Recollecting what you have read can only be done through self-assessment of what you have read. Reading 25% and reciting 75% is always a better way to stay connected with the concepts.
Write more than you read: Making notes in your own words about the concepts is always fruitful. When you make notes, the topic gets registered in your sub-conscious memory. It also helps you to understand what you are studying. Taking notes in your own words and using real-life examples to relate to the concepts is essential. It also helps you to organize the information that you have studied.
Anticipate the important topics: Often, students study for the sake of scoring marks. How about you turn the tables and study for the sake of teaching someone? This is very essential as it gives you the perspective of the teacher.
Studying through the perspective of a teacher lets you access important topics and questions. Peer to peer learning helps you to organize your thoughts in a better way. Individualized learning can let you re-iterate what you know, but peer to peer learning helps you to have a new way to see a concept.
Start with the questions first: This might sound tricky, but don’t take up your book and start reading. It has hardly helped you until now. A smart study tip is to look through the chapter. The overview will let you assess the important topics.
After you are done reviewing, start with the questions at the back of the chapter. It shall keep you alert while you are studying, as you shall be looking out for the answers. Follow it up by reading and reviewing the text. At last, note down the answers in your notebook, highlight the important points and review it twice.
Go to the mnemonic way: This is a very strong and effective method, especially, if you are looking for remembering the vocabulary section. Being aware of the mnemonics shall help you to find a touchpoint about the word or concept.
Using image associations or creating your own jingle using the first letter of the sentence is also helpful. The main aim is to find a touchpoint while studying as it can help you to remember the concepts for a longer time.
