Building Personality & Culture Through Education | Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti

shape Introduction

One of, if not the major objective of education has always been to develop a very good culture in the learners. Education and Culture are interdependent, complementary, and supplementary in all of the aspects. They are like the two sides of a coin. A society with a good culture is very important for the growth of the nation. It is for serving this very same purpose that the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti was established. It is an autonomous organization that was formed in the year 1985 that runs and manages the residential schools known as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas were established for meeting certain important objectives. The institutions educate children while focusing on excellence coupled with equity and social justice. They are providing opportunities to talented children largely from the rural areas so that they can compete on an equal playground with their urban counterparts. Students live and learn together while developing to their full potential. They also follow the three-language formula so that their students are well versed in at least three languages which include English and Hindi. The institutes also serve in each district as focal points for improving the quality of schooling which is achieved by sharing experience and faculties. The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti works to ensure that these objectives are met.

Academic Excellence: The Navodaya schools work to develop competencies among students in all areas be it academic or non-academic. They aim at the various key scholastic areas of education so that it leads to the effective personality development of the students.
Free Education: The schools offer free education for students from Class VI to Class XII. The schools are affiliated to CBSE and follow an almost similar curriculum to normal CBSE schools but with additional merits. There is no cost for amenities such as uniforms, textbooks, stationery, and travel fares. For students of Class XII, a nominal fee of 200 is charged per month. The students belonging to SC/ST and other backward categories are exempted from this fee.
Three Language Formula: The schools ensure that the students are well versed in three languages which are English, Hindi, and the regional language. This gives the students an added advantage in later parts of their academics and career.
Promoting National Integration: Navodaya schools promote national integration through their well-known migration scheme. An inter-regional exchange of students takes place for one academic year. Here, students are exchanged between Hindi and Non-Hindi speaking states. These efforts help to create a better understanding of cultures and develop unity among the students.
Special Attention: The students are looked after in all aspects including academics, personality, health, sports, and other co-curricular activities.
Self-Dependence: Since the children start to look after themselves from the age of 10 or 11, they become self-dependent and self-sufficient by the time their schooling completes.

shape Discipline

The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti makes sure that the Jawahar Navodaya schools make the students follow strict discipline in each and every aspect of their life. When you consider a normal child studying in Class VI, he/she only has one job- go to school and come back. They have no other worries as everything else will be taken care of by their parents including food and clothes. But in a Navodaya school, there is a mandatory Physical Training session every day early morning. He/she should strictly take part in a monthly duty of serving breakfast to others, should participate in a different sport every day, and also conduct and participate in other cultural events. The students are learning management from the very start of their life and doing work for social causes all the time while following a disciplined lifestyle.
Self-Dependence: Since the children start to look after themselves from the age of 10 or 11, they become self-dependent and self-sufficient by the time their schooling completes.
